Works with iOS 6.0 and up

Before anyone else writes that this adapter doesn't work with iOS 6 or higher, please read this:
    1. DO NOT connect the VGA adapter to your apple device until you have done the following.
    2. Connect the VGA cable to the monitor or projector FIRST.
    3. Make sure the monitor or projector is connected to a power source and TURNED ON.
    4. Connect the adapter to the VGA cable.
    5. NOW connect your apple device to the VGA adapter.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing twice and expect to get different results.

I purchased the adpater to use LCD projector for my presentation running under quickoffice, instaviz, fileapp pro etceteras and in reality runs only movie or notes.
The explanations for the product are limited and unclear. This is not a fair commercial approach.

I should have done more research before I bought this product. I was planing on doing a demo of the iPad for our computer user's group and using the VGA adapter to project the iPad screen to the wall. But since the VGA adapter only displays movies and photos, it's kind of useless for me.

Using an LCD projector with IPad

Apple website says that with this special adaper, you could "then see your videos and slideshows on the big screen."
What was omitted was the word "only". You can ONLY see the videos and slide shows. The fact is most of the stuff you want to see on the big screen does not come up on the big screen. Nothing, not even a dialog box came up on the IPad screen when I first conected it. This is disappointing.
Hiding behind one's words might help avoid being blamed for false advertising but does not bode well for relations with loyal customers. I am giving 5 stars for the product because it does connect the two items but I am giving no stars for the representation made.

Apps support adapter for viewing websites, documents, etc.

The iPad dock-to-VGA connector works fine, but you need an app to view more than just Keynote, slides, or video files with it.

I've got three different ones installed: Expedition, Projector, and Web2VGA. I can display PDF, Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers, and other documents on a larger screen or through a projector via these apps, as well as display Internet browsing. These apps work in conjunction with email, DocsToGo, MobileMe, etc., to allow you to open a file in the app of your choosing. I haven't decided yet which one I like best, and they seem to work a little differently from each other so I'll probably keep them all.

These apps also work with the Apple Component adapter cable, too.

Now that I've found this solution to the limited built-in output options of the iPad, I'm very happy with this adapter. Just don't plan to watch HD movies on your new HD LED TV through the VGA cable. You won't be happy with the analog output on your big screen TV...

No Screen Mirroring and Landscape Mode Only

Only a few applications will output to the adapter. Perhaps in OS4.x Apple will add screen mirroring. I was hoping to be able to do training videos for several apps but I'm still relegated to capturing these with a video camera.

This adapter is awesome. Works as advertised. Let me say again iPad 2. I hooked it up to the projector in a conference room and could view everything on it. My buddy has an iPad (original) and not so good. He couldn't get anything to be viewed except videos.

Works perfect - within its limitations

Count me among the people who are disappointed this adapter doesn't work with all iPad apps.

However, with Videos and slideshows in Photos, it works perfectly. The short cable is sturdy. I've found that very few VGA cables will lock into the threads, however, as they are slightly too deeply set in the housing.

If the iPad threw VGA output at all times, this would definitely be a 5-star product. As it is, however, it's misleading as every other system in the world that supports VGA output thows that output at all times - apparently, except the iPad.

Love my iPad... disappointed in the VGA Adapter. Why mass produce something that wont work with the most basic apps available?
I expected more from a company that makes its money on "cool factor"...

Good idea but crippled by not being able to VGA out all apps and the entire iPad experience. Will have very limited usefulness for mobile employees looking to present information and ideas with their iPad.

Only Works for Video, Presentations, and Slideshows

    • Written by from Cambridge

54 of 56 people found this useful

The adapter only allows you to output a video (either stored on the iPad, or from YouTube), as well as share Keynote presentations, Numbers presentations, and photo gallery slideshows. But, it will NOT allow you to "project" the desktop. In a regular laptop, I can connect a projector to the laptop, and I can easily share what I see with an audience. Not so, with this adapter.

    VGA Adapter works well...however

I purchased the VGA adapter for my new iPAD to show downloaded movies that a relevant to my class. The iPAD was projected on the video projector with no problem. However, when trying to display the video, an error message appeared CANNOT PLAY MOVIE: The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies. I tried several iPAD movies and received the same messages. I then tried to play the ultraviolet movies that were downloaded and they played perfectly. I contacted service and they seemed unaware of this problem. Unfortunately, if you read internet blogs, the problem has been around for a couple of years. Apple also states that iPAD will display movies on video projectors with the VGA adapter, but does not state clearly that copywrite protected movies downloaded from iTunes will not play. =(

I have this adapter connecting my iPad2 to a projector. Everything that appears on the iPad screen is projected onto my classroom whiteboard. Everything... If it is on my screen, it is mirrored by the projector.
My particular projector doesn't support sound, so I have to connect an external set of speakers using the headphone jack. It works for me.

In the store i was told I could see everything in my Ipad screen. But for now, only video. I cant project photos!! Why not? It seems its only a software issue, thus Apple doesnt want people to do that. Can´t understand. And one might want to show other content such as web pages, notes, spreadsheets, etc.

Why can't I view purchases through iTunes?

I wish I could rate this product higher, as it is very nice for showing photos and my own videos on a TV. However, I was very disappointed to discover that it would not allow me to play movies and tv shows I had purchased or rented through iTunes. This seems odd. One would think you would want to promote purchases of you own products!!
