Yet another example of Apple's paternalistic behavior

    • Written by from Chicago

Keynote works awesome with this product.

However, if you want to show pictures, it only works in slideshow mode which means you can't advance images at your own pace or pick out individual pics to show. Stu. Pid.

Only a few of my movies will show. The other won't play because apparently my projector isn't an authorized device...even though they're movies I got from iTunes. DRM issues apparently. Which means basically the only one I can watch are ones I rip myself...probably not the intended result of this limitation.

Just terrible product decision yet again by Mr. Mock T.

I am very disappointed with this product. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Apple feels they need to control what I can and cannot project from my IPad. I bought this to be able to connect my IPad to my LCD projector for presentations, and videos. It will allow me to use Keynote, but wont allow me to watch the digital copies of my movies I have uploaded to my device.

I have always owned PCs and the IPad was my first foray into the world of Apple. Apple port ays itself as being about ease of use and freedom, but they are not about freedom at all, they are about control.

Apps which support the VGA Adapter

    • Written by from München

14 of 15 people found this useful

Important: this adapter DOES NOT display all iPad content and mirror the screen as one would expect. Unfortunately, Apple does not clearly advertise that the support for this piece of hardware banks on software implementations of the apps used. Furthermore, apple has only very limited support for its own apps that ship with the iPad.
So, here are the apps that support the adapter:
    - Apple Video App
    - Apple Photo App (only in presentation mode)
    - Goodreader: sports a toggle icon for VGA output, display of files (PDF, JPG, GIF, DOC, XLS..) AND: surfing the web (within Goodreader) - the best implementation for VGA-out I've seen so far
    - iDesk Pro (advertised in iDesk Lite - not tested)
    - iThoughts HD (mindmaps with 3 different resolutions, zoom support)
Hopefully, Apple will reconsider its strategy for hardware add-ons in the future!

Put simply, the product does not work. It is very, very limited. There was no explanation on the packaging and when you look online, it doesn't explain anything. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.
    I want my money back.

Can't believe it's not working like everyone would expect, i.e. as a second display where you could mirror the iPad screen :( What a shame!

Doesn't seem to work as we imagined it...when we asked if we could use it to connect it to a pc monitor or HD tv the apple sales persons did not mention the limitations...makes me fell pretty ripped off.

I normally love Mac products but this one is the lowest of the low. Packaging doesn't contain any explanation so one would expect the same thing you would expect out of the VGA outlet on your laptop. NOPE. You can't see anything but movies, and it seems that I can't even play the movies because a VGA connector is DRM compliant anymore.....

Shame on you Apple. Are you taking notes from Microsoft? Actually you are one-upping them. This is BS.

This device is useless. I bought it so I can use it with Keynote for my school presentations and it doesn't do anything. I tried using it with my tv and same result. The only thing I can see with this device is my photos. Apple is limiting the use of a device that I paid money for, I believe that is against the law and they should stop making useless devices.

I am like the rest of users here. I thought if I get this VGA cable I can have my entire iPad showing on the external scree. But NO NO NO

    only some videos.
APPLE should be ashame of themeslves... I paid like $1000 between all extra adds to ipad and
    then I figure it's worthless.

    This is a don't buyer.
    The possibilities are too limited.
    No sound,
    Only video,
Only slideshows, not even loose pictures,
No possibilities to show iPad content on screen.

    Mistake that I bought it.

The reason this doesn't work with very many apps is because the developers haven't built it into their software. It has nothing to do with this hardware. It's the software that doesn't support it. Who knows? Maybe all apps on ios 5 will work with this vga out. Anyway, stop yelling at apple. It's the developer's fault. It works exactly as promised, hence the rating.

I purchased a few hours ago and feel stupid for it
You can't even see on the iPad what is on display on projection, because it doesn't mirror the slides. You have to guess the location of buttons on your black screen iPad to interact with anything.

I feel fooled and want to warn you: I can't think for a single reason why anyone could possibly want the product.
For me it is useless. And worse, in Brazil it costs 70 dollars and there is no return garanteed.

I will have to beg, cry, blackmail, whatever... In order to get rid of it

Simple, works, provides a second screen for those applications that support it. I'm surprised it doesn't mirror by default, but apps that do presentations (goodreader, keynote, etc) do the right thing...just make sure you're charged up before your talk.

OK, first problem.... How do you power you ipad when it is plugged into this device, So your watching a movie, or giving a presentation when all the sudden, Boom! Your Ipad is out of battery...

Problem Two... This attachment doesn't work with really any application, it doesn't mirror your screen or do anything that it could. Maybe after everyone buys this devise APPLE will come out with version TWO that supports will support a little more... story of apples life.

APPLE you can't make up reviews or delete them quick enough to make this product seem like a must have, another week and this product will have 1 star. My rating is 0 stars, not given that option of course.

How unfortunate that Apple produces these wonderful products but so severely limits their implementation by locking out features. $400 for an ipod touch 4g and I don't have the freedom to use it as a presentation device beyond showing Netflix and a couple of other apps. Let's try the Zune.

The adapter does exactly what it says it does...

    • Written by from Austin

46 of 87 people found this useful

Nowhere in the product description does it say this adapter supports mirroring the display on your iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4G/iPad. I bought the adapter for what it mentions in the description, videos and pictures. It works great with Netflix.

You do have compile in extra code if you want to give demos of applications mirroring the screen, but this is something that only matters to iOS developers. The important thing is that it can work, and takes about 5 minutes of searching the internet to figure out how.

This adapter does what it says it does... nothing more.

    iPad VGA adapter

I was ready to write a bad review because I could not get the VGA adapter to work with my LCD projector. After doing some trouble shooting I replaced the VGA cable that came with the projector with one I got with my flat screen LCD monitor with my pc and now it works. I can display presentations and videos.

Very limited use, a waste of money. I just wanted to view various files on an LCD projector during meetings, it could not do that.
