Works well with a few apps

    • Written by from Bonny Doon

On the minus side, the cable is of apparent limited use. The vast majority of apps do not have support for the Apple VGA Adapter.

On the plus side, if all you need is the combo Apple VGA Adapter + a web presentation tool + an iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th Generation, then there are apps for that. Search the App Store for web presentation.

Conclusion: If you need the VGA Adapter to browse the web or play videos, you are in luck ; if you need the VGA Adapter to project your favorite app, make sure that app explicitly supports external screens.

As everyone else complains, this is not what it seems (in terms of iphone; it apparently works for the ipad 2). If you wish to project exactly what you see on your iphone; this won't do it. I bought it thinking the adapter works the same way as the laptop. The macbook vga adapter projects the screen of your laptop as is. So I automatically assumed that the same would be true for the iphone vga adapter. Well, I was wrong. Don't be wrong.

This is a very specific product, know what you're buying

    • Written by from San Diego

This product is only useful if you are using it for its intended purpose: to allow apps that are written to create output on the external display to do so. I wouldn't buy this unless I had a specific app that I wanted to use with the external display and that app specifically said that it can provide that functionality if you buy this cable. That's it. It's not good for anything else. You wouldn't buy a microwave oven assuming it can deep fry and make toast. I know Apple makes us feel cozy with technology, but with tech gadgets you really have to do your research before buying.

I had asked a few people to join me in a conference room to go over some material, some screenshots I had emailed to my account. Try as I may, the mail app would not display through this adapter. Luckily I was able to forward the same email to a colleague who had a PC laptop and he connected to the video display.

Mail? Why not mail? Who's going to pirate video of my mail box?

You just never know what will work and what won't.

    Get's the job done.

I do love this little adapter. Seeing my iPhone on the big screen is awesome. What really stinks is not being able to charge the iPhone while using this device. Long presentations, movies, etc. drain the battery; and there is no way to charge while using the device. If I would have thought of this, I probably would have spent the extra $ for iPhone component out + component-to-vga for about $15-$20 more and had many more options, about 20+ feet of cable to work with, and audio out.

    Very limited functionality

    • Written by from Minneapolis

This doesn't work universally like the equivalent would on a PC. It works in very limited conditions. Don't buy it unless you've verified that your app will work with it like you expect.

waste of money, does not play everything

    • Written by from Bogotá D.C.

Why you use this item but for playing every app that you have buy? It is a waste of money because just outputs video and keynote, does not support the other apps, that is a shame, because you can`t show a presentation or a content for a third party app (like prezi)....you make the people Jailbreak the ipad cause in Cynthia there is an app that allows you to output everything. Why Apple doesn´t allow that? I wasted my money

This is not the cable connector you think you purchased! It does not perform as you need, it does not allow for displaying your documents, presentations, videos, drawings on a screen. I do not recommend this product.

    deceptive advertising

    • Written by from Brussels

All those who have written a review of this product have been too kind. I read and re-read the product description on the Apple web site and the documentation that came with the adapter, and there is no warning of limitations. Caveat emptor, sure, but I also feel deceived by Apple.

Thanks to the overly paranoid DRM, it's impossible to pay movies bought via iTunes on your monitor or TV. Maybe you should point that out before you charge my credit card

    Epic Product!

    • Written by from Ottawa

This product is awesome! I use it at school a lot of times for my presentations and it does exactly what it is suppose to do... work! If you are thinking about buying this product, keep in mind that it is design to work with old monitors, projectors, televisions... and it may not work if you try to play an iTunes movie because they need an HDCP connection. To view any movie (SD or HD) on the big screen, buy an Apple composite AV cable to play your content on an HD or Analog television at a 480p resolution and for the true HD experience, buy the Apple component AV cable to play your content on an HDTV at 720p.

(P.S. So far you are not able to view what you are seeing on your iPad on the big screen. Lets just hope Apple will modify the iOS software to support this feature.)

You would be good watching a movie with the batteries, But If you want to use this permanently connected for work , You'll keep plugging / unplugging / plugging.

The old Component ones all had a usb plug to charge.

Buy this adapter and you can project 5% of your work on the iPad. As a teacher with ipads in the classroom, I find this very limited. I am hoping Apple will correct this.

Works great with the right Apps!

    • Written by from Gahanna

If you have the right expectations, this thing works great on the newest iPhone and iPad. You just have to have Apps that are designed and ready to be projected, and every App is not designed that way at the moment. Don't blame the hardware when it doesn't work - blame the Apps.

    HUGH RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Written by from Carrollton

This product is a HUGH rip off. Apple better make good on this one with the new version of the iPad. It does not work with a projector not even the videos. One use was going to be as a high school teaching tool with some of the education apps. Apple might as well as put a gun to my head and demand my wallet.

Lesson learned do not buy a product from Apple until reading the reviews not matter how simple the product should function. I have been using my laptop for years (connected to my TV or Projector) watching online TV - I have excellent tech skills and this is what I get for TRUSTING Apple, that will never happen again.

    Too limited, for no reason

    • Written by from Santiago

In the store i was told I could see everything in my Ipad screen. But for now, only video. I cant project photos!! Why not? It seems its only a software issue, thus Apple doesnt want people to do that. Can´t understand. And one might want to show other content such as web pages, notes, spreadsheets, etc.

    Not very useful

    • Written by from Bragg Creek

Like the others, I figured it would output all that was on the iPad's display. I was disappointed when it didn't, but thought I could at least watch a movie on my TV. Nope, the movie I bought directly off iTunes "cannot be played on an external display". Since that, I have tried the thing twice more and haven't been able to get it to output video at all from any app or video - including videos I've taken myself and imported to the device.

    Fail, Apple. Fail.

Works fine for what it is, but limited

    • Written by from Vancouver

Very limited in the content that it will send to a large screen display - many videos simply won't work. This wouldn't be a problem in and of itself, but Apple really doesn't make the limitations clear prior to purchase. A more accurate product description, including details of what it will and won't support, would avoid the frustration.
