Not Bad, But Not So Great

I'm trying to go green, even any little bit. And I'm a fan of Apple products (I have lots of them!). But this particular little gem? Well, perhaps not so much. I got it Friday and plugged it in right away. Al i got was the blinking amber light which according to the instructions is either bad batteries or a bad charger. So I went through all six batteries, still got the blinking amber. Then I tried several outlets in my house, still blinking amber. So I called Apple Care and they didn't know what it was they thought I was talking about an iPod charger. So I went to the Apple store and the salesperson was very friendly and helpful, as always. I left with a replaced charger. But when I got home I had the same issues. So I went through every outlet in my house and finally found one where I didn't get the blinking amber and it actually charged all six batteries...woo hoo!!! So, do we have a very finicky product here? Too sensitive perhaps? My house is not old. There's no way all the outlets in my house are bad except one. Everything else has always worked just fine. Maybe this version 1.0 is not ready for prime time. In theory, I love the idea. Hopefully the kinks get worked out.

all 6 batteries when used in my Magic mouse or wireless keyboard lose the bluetooth connection and only ever read 72% as max charge, also have repeatable issues with batteries not seating correctly in the charger - cheap product - can't say I recommend it.

Perfect addition to the wireless accessories for Apple's products (I'm even using a couple of the batteries in my xbox controller; Don't tell Steve).

Sleek and extremely useful... Like everything else from Apple!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on one of these. It works wonderfully, charges quickly, and is the best companion to my new i7 iMac. I was really glad it came with six batteries; Two for the keyboard, two for the Magic Mouse, and two for my Magic Trackpad.

I would like to point out to those who underrate this product that rechargeable are not like regular batteries, in that they're not as powerful. These are low output rechargeables, so they will not read as 100%. Please remember to also use the battery until dead, then recharge, to condition the battery and maximize it's charge!

Seemed like a great idea, but...

It seems that as soon as I install these (after a full charge) they only show a level of about 70-75% on my Magic Mouse or Keyboard. They also don't seem to last nearly as long as regular Energizer/Duracell type batteries. I guess that's the price you pay for saving a few bucks on disposable batteries.

Just works but requires some care charging non-Apple batteries

I've found my new charger to work well but some technique is required. Particularly, both batteries must be the same type or the charger will get confused and won't charge them. Once past this hurdle, the charger works as advertised.

Some have complained that gadgets show less than full charge with NiH batteries. This is normal. Nickel hydride, lithium, and alkaline batteries have different characteristic voltages. Gadgets estimate capacity from voltage so each of the three will show different initial capacity. NIH will show lower than alkaline. This is normal. Nothing is wrong with charger or battery.

This is not a good product from Apple, I had to return it because the batteries drain really fast on the wireless keyboard and also registered only 45% on a full charge (green light), on the magic mouse it registered 85%... I get my Apple stuff from best buy because they have a 30 day return policy not like the 15 days from the Apple store and also no restocking fee except for the iPhone ;)

    Nice Battery and Charger Combo

Let me preface this with the fact I've been using rechargeable batteries in my gadgets for a while now. I've exclusively used Sanyo Eneloops for about 6 months and have noticed similarities to the Apple batteries. Even when fully charged both report about 80-90% charge to the computer. This normal as rechargeables (especially low self-dicharge one like the eneloops and apple) have a lower mAh rating and voltage than alkalines.

As for the Apple Charger itself, I like the design. It will charge single batteries, something my model of the eneloop charger does not do. The folding plug can be replaced with the international travel kit plugs or a macbook charger extension cable.

The batteries look nice and give about the same performance as the eneloops.

Overall, I recommend buying this set, it's a good starter set. Otherwise, eneloops make a great choice for a kit or additional batteries.

Before I say anything; let me mention that this thing is SMALL! I am most likely going to have to buy another one as I might loose it. But for 30 dollars, you get a charger and 6 AA batteries, 2 of which goes to my Magic Mouse for my MacBook, and the other 4 I use to various items. I will probably be buying more of these because of the need of more batteries. THe only gripe I have is that my MacBook shows that my batteries are 88% when they are fully charged. (I know the NiMH have 1.2 volts rather than the normal 1.5volts) I just wish Apple would release an update for those of use using these types of batteries.

    It's a battery charger.

Other than being tiny and white, I don't see where this product has an advantage over any other battery charger: this may be a product that Apple just couldn't improve. However, they have made it difficult to use for people with limited color vision. The indicator light is tiny, and for people with moderate red/green color blindness the amber and green colors can be hard to distinguish. How about blue and orange for the next model?

Solid product. My biggest complaint is that apple doesn't seem to be supporting the product very well. I couldn't find the manual for this unit in the "manual" section on Apple.com. Wasn't "sure" what the lights meant I've seen 1) Solid Amber 2) Flashing Amber and 3) Green. Over time I've figured it out. Flashing Amber is the one to watch for, it means you don't have the batteries seated properly, took me two days of "not charging" batteries to figure that out. Amber is charging and Green is good-to-go. Apple should have made it clear. Also Apple is getting a lot of bad press on this site because

!!!YOU WON"T GET MORE THAN 85%!!!

battery life with this product but thats the nature of rechargeable batteries. They should really HIGHLIGHT that so people aren't surprised. However I LOVE the charger, they work as promised and the price was excellent. Good job and very Earth Friendly Apple.

If you can live with only being able to charge 2 batteries at a time, this is a fantastic charger. It's very small, which is great for me and the limited space I have. The batteries do not come fully charged but they've lasted at least 2 weeks now under very heavy use. And yes, it works with non-Apple products and batteries as well. I'm considering purchasing another.

    Nice product but not revolutionary

    • Written by from Seattle

Apple's battery charger comes with 6 NiMH rechargeable cells, which are of the eneloop low-self discharge style. If you're going to get rechargeable cells, these types are the only ones worth getting anymore. The benefit is that they retain most of their charge even after a year just sitting around -- unlike rechargeables of old that would lose most of their charge in a week or two (often at the most inconvenient of times). Additionally, you can charge these cells 1000 times, which will likely last 10-15 years.

The charger itself charges up to 2 cells at a time, which is nice in that you have a very compact charger to travel with. The charger also has "smarts" to turn-off charging when a cell is fully charged. It takes about 5 hours to fully charge a set of batteries. So this is a nice product, but it is not revolutionary in that there are other small compact "smart" chargers out there that do the same thing for a bit less money, charge slightly faster and also support AAA batteries. Still, it is a nice package that Apple has put together.

    Apple Bettery Charger!!!Awesome

THis accessory is very helpful and good to have just incase your batteries decide to go dead on you in the middle of doing something. At first I thought $29.00 was a little much but then I got to thinking, how much money does the average person spend on batteries every year. So overall this product was a good buy and I would recommend it to anybody.

    Great Little Charger

Nice & compact. Easy to travel with. First time I tried to charge the batteries, I got a blinking amber light indicating a problem with the batteries. Unplugged it from the wall and plugged it back in and worked fine after that. So far, no issues.

NOTE: Due to the nature of rechargeable batteries, they will NOT show 100% charge on your Mac. Alkaline batteries put out 1.5 volts, while rechargeable NiMH batteries are rated at about 1.25 volts. This means a fully charged battery will only display around 83%. Do not be concerned if Mac does not show 100% charge for your mouse or keyboard. This is normal.

Like anyone else, I thought you're only getting the wall charger & 2 AA rechargeable batteries. However, when you open this package, keep digging deeper. They also include another 2 sets of 2 AA batteries in addition to the first two (comes with 6 AA batteries altogether).
