    Original Adapter

    • Written by from Las vegas

My original adaptor looks like it was in a fire, which is what concerns me. The thin wire is shredded from the magnetic attachment just about to the block. I've had many issues with power cords in the past, but have never seen a cord shred like this and so quickly. It wasn't long after purchase that this process began.

It takes a bit of manipulation to attach the charger at the right angle so it starts charging my laptop. What's up with this?!

MacBook Pro Power Adaptor, weak cable, random power outs

    • Written by from Rio de Janeiro

I think there are 2 main problems that I've experienced with the macbook and macbook pro power adaptors.
    1) I've had three macbooks and all have the same stress fatigue occurring on the cable within about 1 inch of the magnetic socket. The cable housing first begins to crack within the first few months of purchase, within 12 months the housing is completely open and crumbling; it appears to be some kind of chemical breakdown of the rubber casing, occurring at the spot of most fatigue.
    2) The second problem I've noticed, is the same as others on the forum, that the power adapter will stop working for 30 mins or so and will need to be left alone unplugged. This problem first appears within a few months of purchase and progressively gets worse. The fault occurs fairly randomly, It can be left unplugged for days and develop the problem within a few minutes of use.

product is great, idea with magnetic plug is brilliant, however it desperately needs to improve quality of 12V power cord rubber material.
I own also toshiba, purchased 8 years ago - power cord still looks as new one.
but, it took 1 year for MagSafe Power adapter and power cord covered with cracks.

    Room For Improvement

I agree with most reviewers on here. For $80 dollars you'd expect something to last longer. This will be my third charger in 2 1/2 years. I don't understand why they keep crapping out. I thought it was something I was doing, so I went to the store and they confirmed it's just the product. I'm frustrated I keep having to spend the money on a product that should last longer. Especially coming from Apple. Come on guys, get it together!

    Lack of durability

While I like the design for the new chargers better than the old, it is essentially the same. My newest charger lasted about 4 months before it broke. Luckily I have the charger from my previous Macbook, which I've miraculously managed to keep working for 4 years. Spending $80 on a new charger that will likely last less than a year is a painful thing to have to do.

    Expensive & Dangerous

They last only for about one to two years which seems like a long time, but every two years you would have to buy a replacement for $80 which is very expensive. The cord broke off and exposed the wires. Recently i started seeing blue sparks come out and i smelt burning. It was literally burning the rubber casing off. I still need to get a new one but until then my laptop will just be dead

    needs more durability

I have spent more money on replacing the adapter/power cord than the computer itself! After several attempts to try to stop my critters from chewing on the cords they still do it (including sprays). Perhaps make the cord a bit more durable or at least provide an option for customers to help protect the loooooong cords.

Must wrap your cord if traveling with charger

Since 2009, I have broken 3 of these adapters and I am now on my 4th. Apple had no sympathy and never replaced under warranty so 79.00 x 3 = $237 + tax. So I asked a worker at the apple store last time I replaced my adapter. He told me that you must wrap the cord around those nubs that pull out. If you do not do this, the cord twists and binds which puts high tension on the cable attachments. So now I do it every time and it hasn't broken since. Unless you want to waste money like i did, WRAP YOUR CORDS! Apple won't tell you these things unless you learn the hard way. Learn from my mistake please.

    On my 4th adapter--all inferior

Wire quality poor. I appreciate the magnetic connection best. But the wire still gets bent and disconnected from the small lighted box. It was taped at the store just to get me started. I have tried various tapes since then. None are really able to keep the connecting wire from bending and finally breaking. Today I found a break about a foot down and taped it with a little Duct tape to keep the inner wire inside. Cheap materials, I say. I have other cameras, etc, that need connectors also, they are all sturdy and take the natural bending better than Apple's adapter.
I realize there was a lawsuit that paid out $$ if you sent in the defective one (up to 2) I missed the deadline. The non-functioning adapters are waiting in a box in the closet for the next class action suit. I'd like to know what Apple store the woman in Albany got a free replacement from.
I love my little macbook 13" 2008 model. Some of the letters can no longer be read on the keyboard, but it still works wonderfully well and has more features than the newer laptops that have no CD-Rom, etc. It lasts 'infinitely longer' than any brand of PC laptop my friends own. I would hate to change from an Apple laptop to one of the new Windows 8 notebooks, but...
So, as I stick with Apple it becomes a kind of annual "rent" that I pay $79 for a new ac adapter. When Apple prides itself on its slick and good design why does it continue producing their inferior adapter?

wow the magsafe is taking a reviewer beating here! I just repaired mine, for a while anyway, by following one of many do it yourself (diy) repair guides on youtube. I used a soldering iron, some solder, and a pair of pliers, pretty much.

    Power cord

Too flimsy where it connects to the magnet. I'm supposed to pay $80 to get a whole new dervice when only the cord is weak near the magnet and therefore not making a consistent connection. I was snootily told by one of those "genius" brats that I could not just get the cord part replaced. See if I buy another Apple--after 20 years of loyalty!

    Poor price-quality ratio

I've had the original charger from when I first bought my Macbook three years ago so I'm apparently one of the luckier ones. From a lot of the reviews below, I've noticed people have an issue with the durability of this power adapter, what with wires getting frayed but personally, the physical integrity of my cable is intact. Yet, after months of giving me grievance (sometimes charging, sometimes not), I think it's finally kicked the proverbial bucket. I've never, in my life of buying electronics, had to replace a power adapter and at that price I have to say I'm a little disappointed.

Yes, now it was my turn to suffer from a frayed cable with my power adapter after a little over 4 years of owning this thing, but I am EXTREMELY careful with my things. For most people these are lasting a little over a year. I agree that the cable should be a lot more durable, especially at $80 a pop.

I live in Chile now and can't even find a replacement for the 60W MagSafe. I write this review as only 42 minutes remain in my battery, probably one of the last things I will do with my trusty MacBook... So sad...

    Poor insulation rubber

    • Written by from Bangalore

The problem with rubber insulated cables is that they degenerate and melt away. Same has happened with my Bose earphones and now it's my Magsafe adapter cable. Now, I will need to buy a new one just because of degenerated cable. It would have been helpful if the cable was detachable.

    Defective!

I will admit that I like the style of charger, the magnet is definitely a good idea to prevent cord breakage when it gets accidentally ripped out. However, I do not enjoy the fact that I have been through six (6) chargers within the 2.5 year span I've had my macbook. I'm on my way to seven (7) as my current one has the same issues as all the others. The cable or the magnet, I'm not sure which, does not like to charge, nor does the LED come on to show it's charging, I assume poor connection or faulty wiring in the cable it's self. Currently, I have my adapter taped to my macbook as it's the only way it will charge. It's disheartening that as I as a consumer choose to spend a great deal on a productthat is meant to be lasting, however I am still having these issues. I'm also disappointed that this is a known issue yet nothing has been done to try and rectify it.

I have had my MBP for 2 years now, and I have had to replace the charger once already due to the fraying of the wire. Luckily for me the apple store replaced it free of charge, because they saw the charger was kept in good condition so it not working, wasn't due to carelessness. Even after two years, people ask me why my MBP looks so new.

    Great product... when it works

    • Written by from Uniondale

Apple needs to rethink this design. Yes, it might be safer, but the small prongs no longer stay in place and hold a charge. Its not fun when you are down to 3% power and you have to jiggle and wriggle to try and beg your charger to work properly. It has only been two years. I thought it was just me, until I came here to buy a new one and saw other reviews. It's sad that Apple has such loyal and devoted customers who spend so much on their products and when we have to replace a necessary component we find out that it's expensive. Shame on you Apple!
