    6th?

    • Written by from Langhorne

Through the years I've owned multiple apple products and have been satisfied with everything but this. When I had my original charger, it would over heat. Over a year ago I had gotten a puppy - who chewed my $80 MagSafe power cord.. Since then I have been purchasing my cords from a seller on amazon, and have come to find that their products are refurbished, and just as well - trash. My 5th charger is now shot, and I'm debating which to purchase, the yucky cheap one, or take a chance with the expencive official apple product that as well has bad reviews.

    Poor design

    • Written by from Richmond

I'm not nearly as impressed with this power adapter as I am with other Apple products. My first adapter stopped working while my MacBook was under warranty. The replacement is less than a year old and the cord is frayed at the magnet. It seems that no matter how the magnetic terminal is oriented the cord still takes an almost ninety degree turn, hence the insulation breaking. They need to work on this component.

    Unfortunately...

    • Written by from Winnipeg

Let me begin by saying I am a programmer, and I used to fix computer hardware for a living; which is to say that I am both critical of quality, and careful with my own equipment. Indeed, I have pampered my laptop, and all its accessories with the loving care of one who plans to sell a mint condition laptop when I next upgrade. To say I have treated this adapter with the greatest care is to say much less than could be said.

Which is why I was stunned one day to find my laptop no longer charging. I barely had 20 cycles on the battery! I hit the web, and checked all the things it might be (dirt in the contacts, etc. etc.), but none of the "you're an idiot" solutions applied. Yet when by chance I moved the wire next to the magnet end, the laptop started charging, I knew the problem was a poor connection in the wire. Whether that was a side effect of what seemed to me to be excessive heat at the magnet end when plugged in, or a quality flaw from the factory, I cannot say - but if the number of soured reviews is indicative of anything, it certainly suggests a deficiency that has yet to be seriously addressed. I can say this much; this product was grossly overpriced when it was merely an adapter cable for a premium laptop - but when the same product comes out of the box with a lemon-in-waiting adaptor, I have to say, the quality of these cables, for all their aesthetics (and price), is regretably, even incomprehensibly poor.

Perhaps Apple will examine the abysmal ratings they are getting, and fortify what would otherwise be a great (albeit wallet-gouging) cable. The second of the two stars is because I like every other Apple product I own (and I own many) and would feel overly guilty if I only put the single star the product was worth. Benefit of the doubt and all that.

The charger seems to get really hot, so keep it above surfaces, and they die too quickly as a result from the overheating.

    Replaced twice in last year

    • Written by from Trumann

I have had my MacBook Pro now for about a year and now have had the power adapter go out for the the 2nd time. I am a loyal Apple customer, because of the quality of Apple products as a whole, but this particular item STINKS!

    • Written by from Buies Creek

My charger melted. I used it for about a year and a half and then one day...the casing melted and the wires disconnected. I always noticed that the charger got very hot when I used it...and then one day...poof...dunzo.

    Cost vs Quality

They all break - especially if you travel with them. The problem I have is that when this one breaks, it's $80!!!! Get your cost in line with the product quality!!!!!!

    Really needs improvement

    • Written by from Baytown

I had my Macbook for four years and went through three of these cords. The first and third just stopped working; the second one got so hot that I was afraid to use it.
I purchased a new Mac Pro in July and now the first power cord has gone out. I think that, if these cords need to be returned so often, they need to be MUCH less expensive.
Beyond that, we really need to develop a cord that will last.

Be very careful with this power cord

    • Written by from Springfield

Sure this power cord works great, if you only have it in a climate controlled room and that is the only thing you will ever do with it, but if you are a student, this isn't practical. Power cord broke, even though I took good care of it, luckily I had a power cord from my old macbook. Best advice, charge it before you go, and keep the cord in a climate controlled environment, unless you have $80 burning a hole in your pocket.

    It's not perfect product

    • Written by from 札幌市

This product is too large to connect on the wall directly. I was likely to kick it sometimes.
After I used this adaptor for about 1 year, it became not to charge my MacbookPro. It seem a poor contact at the connection part and cable.

    Poor design.

The cord needs to be detachable from the plug in unit. Why not have a replaceable cord? The iphone/ipad charger does this nicely with a USB connection. This is not up to Apple's high standards.

Magsafe is a brilliant idea but does not last

    • Written by from DPO

I bought a Macbook Pro 13" in November 2010. I had a Dell XPS 13" before. I got tired of the power adapter constantly falling out of the Dell after a few months of use. The magsafe design eliminates that and really is a great design. However, these things simply do not last. My first one lasted 8 months before failure. The second one lasted about 6 weeks. To make matters worse, I now live in South America and while I have Apple Care, it takes 8 days to get another adapter, unless I feel like paying about double what they are sold for in the US. Two stars overall for the design, 1 star for reliability. Apple, you make great products and I have a lot of them but your power adpaters are awful. You can't be making money on Apple care because you must be replacing these things all the time.

    Apple should recall

    • Written by

My experience is similar to those reported here. I bought a new MacBook Pro last year and the power adapter is not working. I had another one for my previous MacBook, which I had bought a short time before and that one isn't working either. They seem to have a one-year life span. They are not cheap and customers should not have to be extra careful to use them as suggested by one reviewer. Normal usage should not result in these problems. Apple needs to make amends to customers.

    Doesn't last

    • Written by from Miramichi

I've had my MacBook Pro for about a year and a half now, great laptop, charger worked great, and charged the laptop fast. However, out of nowhere it seems to have a sudden short and will only charge when set in an exact way. It hasn't been mistreated in any way and just suddenly went faulty. Getting a replacement seems way too expensive for what it is.

    Horrible

    • Written by from Waldorf

I just bought my mac and adapter in february ... its now september- my Adapter has a short in it. i have to twist and turn it a certain way for it to even charge my laptop. Now i need a new one AND ITS 73.00 are you kidding me?

For this adapter to be so flimsy i expect a lower price. Dell computer adapters are sturdier and their adapters are universal (I can go to Walmart and pick one up)

So I am ordering another adapter now ... 73.00 down the drain- thanks Apple. Please make a sturdier, thicker and more endurable, COST CONSCIOUS adapter.

    Still Rubbish

    • Written by from Winston Salem

Even with the new design, my latest charger lasted only slightly longer than a year. Of course, this is a remarkable improvement over the slightly-less-than-a-year lifespan of the previous charger design.

    Awesome design, but....

    • Written by from White Pigeon

it dies/gives trouble very quickly (about a year or less). I have the late 2010 MacBook Pro 13" and my charger just recently started to act up. Sometimes it will charge, sometimes not. Most times it will get very, very hot (too hot to touch) right on the connector. It's most certainly not worth $80 for a new one. Apple should have a full-scale recall on these. I definitely wouldn't go as far as never buying another Apple product just because a lemon charger (as some other people are saying in these reviews). Now I'm stuck with a non-OEM replacement (NOT Apple's fault, GeekSquads fault), but who knows, it may last longer.
