Come on Apple! This product is terrible

    • Written by from Colorado Springs

I love my MacBook Pro, but I am about to run out and buy my 3rd power cord in the 3 yrs I've owned my computer. Not a problem if they were reasonably priced, but $80 come on! What a rip off for a product that won't last more than a year. These cords always fray right near the power adapter and where they enter the computer, I tried to tape my most recent one with electrical tape at the points to prolong its life, but instead it just frayed right where the tape ends. Apple, I am sure you have got to have enough brain power to make some more durable cords, get to work! In the meantime, lower the price on your current cords.

I guess I should consider myself lucky...mine lasted a little over a year

    • Written by from Hauppauge

I just came on to purchase a replacement adapter and saw all the negative comments. Some people had to replace the adapter after only months of use. That is crazy!!!! I take care of my laptop and adapter and today, all of a sudden, I saw it was cracked/melting. It did last over a year so does that mean I should consider myself lucky....(sigh). Hopefully Apple makes note of all these negative comments and does something to improve the quality of these adapters.

    NEGATIVE 5 STARS

    • Written by from San Jose

This power adapter is by far the worst product I've ever used. We spend thousands of dollars on a laptop and have to spend more because neither the battery of power adapter can go on for more than a year. Unfortunately, we don't have a choice but to buy an Apple Power Adapter because only Apple makes it. After a while when you connect the charger to the laptop you have push or adjust it for it to start charging or else it just sitting there not charging.

    Poor quality, expensive to replace

    • Written by from Mercer Island

This is an awful charger and stops working usually between a few months and a year. It doesn't stop working because of the user, it stops working because of poor quality of the product. After a little over a year I had to replace mine because it wouldn't charge the laptop, and Apple charges $80 to replace it!

It's not uncommon either. I have yet to meet anyone college-aged with a laptop more than a year old who hasn't had to replace this charger at least once. If your computer is out of it's one-year warranty don't expect Apply to replace it's obviously poor quality and defective product.

    Argh

    • Written by from San Antonio

I'm on my third one. Mine don't fray, but eventually I'll plug it in to the laptop and nothing happens. No light, they just die. I'll think it's my laptop. But it's always the power adapter. The brick gets really hot I guess and shorts itself out.

    Expensive and doesn't last

    • Written by from Miami

The charger is expensive but they don't last too long. If it lasted longer maybe the $80 would be worth spending.

Cheaply made, lasts around 12 months

    • Written by from Evans

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro, with the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter. I am on my fourth adapter in 4 years. At $80 each these things really should last more than 1 year. My old Dell laptop never had the charger fail. Don't get me wrong, I love the Macbook, but the chargers are junk. The plastic covering the cable next to Magsafe adapter breaks and the cable eventually stops charging all together.

Too cheaply made, too expensive to buy

    • Written by from Dundee

I am very disappointed by how easily this charger wore out and broke. And charging $79 for a new one is ridiculous, especially since I paid a lot for my MacBook to begin with. Please rethink your design, make it more durable. And lower the price. I am planning on switching from Apple products because I do not feel that I am getting a quality product for how much I pay for them.

    Bring back the T-style!

    • Written by from Tucker

My wife and I haven't had the same connectivity issues as many reviewers here, but I do want to note that our L-style adapters are literally falling apart--peeling, exposed wires, cracks. I never had this issue with my T-style adapter, which I used for 4-5 years before my cat got to it. My current charger is being held together with electrical tape, surrounded by a second layer duct tape.

The kicker is I never even take my charger anywhere; it's not an issue of wrapping the cords too tightly or mangling them in a backpack. The charger just sits at our desk when neither of us is using it, and it's still falling apart. $80 is WAY too much for this POS. Bring back your old charger, please!

    Split, frayed, and twisted

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

My charger conked out last night for the last time. I say the last time because I have had continual problems with it. I had to add the extension cord to it about a year ago because the plug in broke. That worked until now when last night the part for the cord attached to the block totally split and frayed and turned the cord surrounding brown. I didn't even know it happened until it suddenly didn't work and I had an unhappy surprise awaiting me. That's how quickly it happened. I don't know if it was because of twist buildup or it got caught on some thing or something else. I called today and they said it was out of warranty so I would simply have to buy an expensive new one.

    Been through 3 this year

    • Written by from Iqaluit

The adapters are awful. Usually they last a year or two but this past year I have been through 3. I am not a heavy user. I do not travel with my laptop and I usually leave the adapter on my desk. Very upset. I am reconsidering apple computers altogether as a result of the additional 300$ expense in replacement power adapters.

    MacBook's weak link

    • Written by from Stonington

I'm ordering my third or fourth charger/cord in four years. This one lasted under a year; definitely not on par with Apple's other standards.Since I'm paying $79, which seems like quite a lot for a power cord (once a year at this point) I'm an unhappy customer ordering yet another one since I don't see an alternative. And just weeks ago I lent my charger to friends (2 separate parties) who had the same problem. This has been the MacBook's weak link for several years now, it gets mostly negative reviews, but doesn't get fixed. This is a bit baffling and frustrating. Hate to spend the money on yet another charger that probably won't last, but I don't have much choice.

    Extremely Upset

    • Written by from MERRITT ISLAND

I am now on my 3rd one of these and yet again it is starting to go bad after not even a year. It always happens the same way. They start out great.. and eventually you have to mess with it to get it to charge, and then it just goes. I HATE these stupid things. I complain every time I've had to replace, but nothing gets done about it. $80 is WAAY to much for these pieces of junk. They need to give these things out for free.. soo frustrated, especially when you're a broke college student who NEEDS a computer!!!!!

    Time for adapter #4

    • Written by from LITCHFIELD

I seriously want Apple to reconsider their fabulous design. I now need to buy my fourth adapter in two years. At this rate I could buy a new (pc) laptop. How hard would it be to use an adapter like all the other laptops use? I have no issues with those breaking, twisting, coming disconnected, or simply failing.

Horrible problem that Apple seems to not care about

    • Written by from Charlotte Hall

every single one of these chargers is flawed. they are bound to break no matter what. i took extremely good care of mine and it worked like a charm for about a year. Then the brick started heating up to insane/unsafe temperatures. This charger is definitely a fire hazard. The smaller cable at the brick side started to break all at once. over about a 2-3 day process the charger was completely broken. the cable got to such an intense amount of heat, i could see the rubber burning off of it and could smell it burning. Without any mishandleing on my behalf, the sheilding became completely frayed and there is no longer a connection. i would go in and rewire it myself if only i could open the brick up, it seems as if it is impossible to open. Very unsafe product. Very horrible product overall.
