    Absolutely Terrible

    • Written by from Floral Park

I am currently on my second cord. This one barely made it 6 months before the wire started to fray. I am completely disgusted. Not only is it annoying not to have a properly functioning power cord, its unsafe and completely ridiculous that I have to spend another $80 to replace it. I don't understand how apple can provide this product in good conscience to consumers. It is especially frustrating considering that it seems like a simple design flaw.

Why does this product still exist?

    • Written by from Lathrop

Apple, have you even taken a look at these reviews? It's outrageous how many people are having to replace their charger. Even with a 4 month old charger, it will turn off when jiggled. It's time to rethink your charger, unless of course this is all intentional and you take pride in charging Apple Users a semi-annual fee of $80 to continue to operate a Macbook (and if that's the case, you're criminals). Release a new and improved charger that will work after a year (hey, why not even try 4 or 5 years of functionality?). And to make up for this excuse of charger, why not set the price a little lower.

Cord works but casing becomes frayed

    • Written by from Windsor

For the most part the L-shaped adapter works perfectly, it's lasted me two years so far since it came with the Macbook, but what I've been having issue with is the casing around the cord. The power is still carried to the computer but the plastic casing around the actual cord (not the L part) constantly is breaking apart. Maybe next time use a sturdier material than flimsy plastic because I carry my power cord with me everywhere and it seems wrapping it up with the square portion of the power cord causes it to eventually break apart. I've got more masking tape on the cord than it came wrapped in. If you want to keep selling these things for $80, maybe make sure it doesn't break apart. Many people with MacBooks are university students or working professionals who carry their Macbooks with them, we need something that can handle travel.

    Breaks FAR too quicky

    • Written by from Eugene

I go through one of these cords about twice a year, which is far too often. They are made fragile, and the cord always breaks from normal usage. No matter how careful I am with these cords, they break.
Apple, PLEASE make these cords more durable. It isn't fair to your consumers to force us to buy these on a regular basis as if cords are disposable. Microsoft cords do not have this problem at all!!!

Love my laptop, hate the adapter.

    • Written by from Liguanea

I've had my laptop for exactly two years and it works great. I've had no serious issues and no major complaints aside from the occasional OS bugs that are easily resolved. However, I hate the adapter. I'm about to order my second replacement adapter. 3 adapters in 2 years? That's ridiculous. I've never had this issue with other laptop brands before. Judging by the other reviews, people feel the same way as I do and are tired of wasting money on poor quality adapters. Apple, please fix this!

Not something that is good and lasts long

    • Written by from Bengaluru

Did not last more than 2 years. Had connectivity problem with cable and cables are not detachable. Apple says buy a new one.

Spares are way too expensive and not a way to repair it.

    MagSafe

    • Written by from bangalore north

Macbook Pro is really an awesome product to work on. The Magsafe power adapter just works perfect with it, but the design of the power adapter is really bad.. and the cable quality is really bad!! Please focus on such minor issues also, because we are paying a lot for it!!

    4+ chargers over a 3 year period

    • Written by from Columbia

We have tried buying original OEM, original Apple, used, etc. they all are pieces of crud. We do not abuse the cords at all, only keep them plugged into the charger! The cord near the laptop pulls away then frays, like there is stress placed on it and there's not. Then others the cord connecting into the magsafe breaks away from the housing. This is such a ridiculous piece of equipment, very unhappy with this Apple product.

broken after less than a year

    • Written by from Mt laurel

You would think that all of these negative reviews would make apple change their product. This is my second macbook pro charger, and this one broke in less than a year. I plug it in and it doesn't light up, doesn't charge, nothing. for $80, I would like a product that actually works.

    Another MagSafe Bites the Dust

    • Written by from SEATTLE

I am now on my 5th power adapter over the short lifespan of 2 macbook/macbook pro laptops. Not only have the last 2 stopped working, but they sparked and shut down my computer, leaving black marks around the connection site to my laptop. Luckily my computer still works, but for a company known for their high quality products, this is simply unacceptable. Looking through previous comments, it is obvious that the bulk of the apple community feels the same way. Apple, please consider a redesign that is actually an improvement in durability that will last with standard use. Also, the price of the replacement adds insult to injury.

doesn't last much longer than a year

    • Written by from Kalamazoo

The original adapter that came with my 2011 MBP charges great; unfortunately the cable close to the "L" rips and shreds just short of a year. Luckily, I was still within the manufacturer's warranty and was able to receive a free replacement but sadly enough, its just over a year later, I'm no longer under the manufacturer's warranty, and my cord is just starting to shred. It'd be great that if I spend over $1000 on a laptop whose manufacturer boasts about forethought in design that the accompanying charger would be as quality as the laptop I bought...just saying.

    RE-DESINGED THIS NOW!!

    • Written by from Carter lake

Just a cheap, flexible, Plastic will do, This rubbers has too much grip and breaks down like an eraser.

Stop making cables with so much grip, They make contact with everything and rub on everything really hard. Both These and the iphone USB Have that problem. use a glossy plastic instead of this rubber, That way just like GORILLA GLASS its very hard to scratch, itll last much longer.

    Bordering on a scandal

    • Written by from OAKTON

MacBooks are the bomb, everyone knows that - users, reviewers, etc. so it's unbelievable to me that for years everyone in the Mac world has been railing on and on about these incredibly expensive, unreliable, and ultimately disposable (I'm having to get my 3rd in the past year) power cords while Apple has done Nothing about it. Seriously, what gives?

    Mag safe power adapter

    • Written by from Waterloo

This is a good adapter. It manages to stay cool and I've never had an issue with it getting tangled. The extension is very nice. But it's the quality and the life of these wires that worries me. They don't last long at all. With simple bends and calm use of the power adapter the plugs get bent, the cord fabric gets ripped and soon after you see it not being much of any use. I would very much prefer getting a much robust material which can endure bends and rough edges and occasional roll overs with a chair. It's 80 dollars plus tax, you really should be giving a quality product. This isn't the quality expected from Apple. Apple products are supposed to endure and provide a premium feel, much like an Audi or BMW would give an enthusiast. I'd like to see this being improved in the near future, especially with the release of the new Macbooks. Cheers, but I'm not satisfied with the product. But I have to buy it and keep on buying it. Do you think it's reasonable? I certainly don't think so.

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

I am writing this with 44 mins left on my battery as my computer dies due to this cord for the third time! While I love my Macbook I hate this cord issue. Three cords in three years is not acceptable by any means especially when the stupid replacements cost 80 bucks. Really 80 bucks for a cord?? I can't imagine it costs anything close to produce it....thanks for the price gouging.

Cheap plastic sheathing needs to be replaced

    • Written by from Calgary

The quality of this product is appalling.
I noticed small cracks along the low voltage side of the cord when it was just over a year old. At first I blamed my cats for chewing on the cord – why they were chewing on that cord and none other I never understood - and did a repair job using electrical tape and CSA approved heat seals. Then more and more started to appear. Just this morning I discovered the plastic cord holder that slides up and down the cord to be used for wrapping was the culprit. It shredded the cord next to the repairs and disintegrated the plastic wrap underneath – it was immobilized by my repairs and still caused great damage.
I removed it, tested the cables underneath (all good and the cable casing underneath the plastic sheath looks to be undamaged) and resealed it but if I wasn't watching this would have been a fire and shock hazard. The cord holder was sharp inside and puncturing the wire sheathing.
I am very unhappy with it.

    Weak product.

    • Written by from Dallas

I love my Macbook Pro. And as a college student majoring in writing, I'm on my computer very often, although mostly at home. I've never had any problems with my machine, however I am having terrible experience with the power adapter. I am on my second one, and soon to be on my third, since my current one is giving me problems. Within the past few months, it has been visibly weakening and fraying at the base of the DC connector, despite my best efforts to prevent that (it doesn't leave my house anymore, so travel-related wear isn't the issue anymore). Even before the fraying, it seemed very temperamental, and even the slightest shift would stop it from charging. It also overheats so quickly that I'm afraid to keep it plugged in for too long, even if it's not at full charge. I don't remember my first one getting quite so hot in a short amount of time. I know it needs to be replaced because it's getting to the point where 50% of the time it doesn't actually work; however I cannot afford to drop another $80 every few months when I have other more pressing expenses to worry about. It's disappointing that a great computer is held back by such a lousy adapter. If this happens again, I might just have to find a cheaper solution (i.e. investing in a pc whose replacement parts are more affordable).
