    Great Product, But ...

    • Written by from Toronto

The adapter is great and I love it. But it gets scratched easily and the top of the cord near the mag safe gets broken easily! Not such great price tag, but its excepted from Apple.

I approve of the new design and hopefully . . .

    • Written by from staten island

it lasts. i was on the fence whether to purchase another power adapter from apple or get a knock-off on amazon. the reviews of the knock-offs were actually worse than the reviews on the apple site. so since i wasn't looking forward to seeing a melted gooey lump next to my macbook i shelled out the 80 clams and bought the new adapter. so far i am very pleased, this is my 3rd adapter, apple did replace my first adapter & my 2nd adapter's magnet head broke off due to excess bending and with this new design i think this problem will b no more. i gave it 4 stars because i think the design change is significant and I would've given it a 5 but I don't want to apple to think I'm some cheap date.

A tip for power supply failures

    • Written by from Liberty Hill

On a Friday over five years ago I went to the Apple store and purchased six MacBooks and a Mac Mini as an office file server. I went back to my office, passed them out and let my Windows IT person go. I told my staff two things. "Go home and learn how to use this over the weekend. We are converting to Apple on Monday. Second, DO NOT wrap the power cable around the supplied "wings" on the power adapter because you will eventually damage the cord. Simply wrap it in a circle around a few fingers and run the end of the connector through the middle of the loop." It's been five years and we just had our first adapter failure. So, that's my story. Don't use the foldout storage on the power adapters. People tend to wind them to tight and break the internal wires next to the adapter. This obviously isn't the only reason for an adapter failure, but I'd be willing to bet some people are causing their own problems. There is room for improvement in the adapter or you would be able to use the built-in storage without a problem. Oh, and if the green light on the adapter is on make sure it is not just the fact that you need to reset your battery. I've had to do this on two machines after a few years. Plug the adapter into another Mac (if available) and see if it works.

    Not cool...

    • Written by from Toledo

I bought this cord in August because my cousin's cat, ate through the original that I got when I bought my macbook in 2008. I read other reviews saying that the cord stopped working after a few months of them buying it and hoped that I would have better luck. I left my computer open and not plugged up for a few hours and when I went to plug it up, there was absolutly NO charge coming from the cord. My computer is still dead b/c I don't feel like dishing out another $83 for a new cord, but I really don't have a better option because thats what Apple feels like they should charge. There really isn't anything you can do, but this is horrible

    No Complaints

    • Written by from North East

I have been using Apple laptops for some years and with the first charger that came with my old white macbook I had a problem with, but since they have changed to the new design neither myself nor the wife has had an issue. What are people doing to bang them up and get them frayed.
I take care of how I wrap the cord when I need to take my laptop with me so no complaints at all, but I guess it is still early. I have had my Pro since July '11 and my wife has only had her air for a month. So no problem but I guess this is to be continued.

    Great adapter

    • Written by from VOORBURG

Got this adapter with my Late 2008 Macbook. It's keeping my MacBook alive for over 40 months now. Lately ,since about 1-2 weeks now, it sometimes won't connect properly with the MacBook. I just pull it out and back in and it works. Besides that awsome adapter.

    Lasted a long time!

    • Written by from Yonkers

Contrary to many reviews, my adapter lasted 3.5 years. I often brought it with me, so it did not last merely due to underuse. Recently I noticed that it had frayed near where the cord leaves the adapter to plug into the laptop. Today, though, it stopped working entirely.

It has served me very well, though! I hope the next one lasts just as long.

    I'm here to buy

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I don't need to review this because I didn't have a problem with the original. Most reviewers had bad experiences. I would imagine that most people have good experiences. But do not bother to review it. Why review something that works?

Yes, I agree $80 is a ripoff price. I would appreciate a lower price.

But I'm buying another because I'm bringing my laptop from home to office and tired of bringing the cord. I want to note that this is my 2nd apple laptop and have never had a problem with their last plug either.

this could be why their breaking..

    • Written by from Rancho Cordova

We are dealing with machines here! Of course it's going to break WHEN YOU DONT TAKE CARE OF IT. I've had my charger for over 2 years with no sign of a malfunction. I've made sure to take really good care of it, by not dropping it! leaving it in your car near direct sunlight, nor leaving it anywhere where it could be exposed to extreme low temperatures.

This implement cannot protect itself, you have to care for it....
It will not last if you treat it like loose change.

but i will agree, they are expensive to replace! and should be lowered if you were to bring back one that did happen to break within the last 30 days.

    Good quality improved

    • Written by from Missoula

I've used Mac laptops since the Pismo PowerBooks. And I have had the adapters wear out quicker than the computer. I have purchased both Apple and others replacement power supplies.

I recently bought a couple more Apple MagSafe adapters for my MacBook Pro. I wanted to leave one adapter in my office and give my daughter the other. It seems the adapters have a beefier cord connecting the adapter to the computer. This may greatly improve durability. I am pleased with the quality and see no reason that it won't outlast the computer. My daughter's adapter, on the other hand, should last longer than her first one but she is rough on the cord as she stuffs it into her backpack. In conclusion, from my experience, these are improved power supplies that should last longer than earlier models. They are higher quality than any I have seen from any other manufacturer.

    EHHH~~

    • Written by from South Pasadena

Well, its has about 2 and half years owning this macbook pro and now my started to flicker and die off. When it died, I got pretty frustrated. While I was writing this review though, I had angled my mac book in a way that was against the pillow. I had my charger on my macbook just hoping somehow it would turn on before I actually order one. When my charger was leaning against my pillow, suddenly the charger started working and my macbook was charging. So I bent the place where the wire and the little rectangle thing that a green/orange light appears, then WALLAH! Its working. I thinkn the connecting points on the mac get weak after a time or so and sometimes, we just need to pop it back in either by bending it or just playing around with it until it somehow connects.

I give this review 4 stars because it has served me well all this time. However, the cost is just too expensive. I committed to a macbook pro so did many others, and had been an adamant Apple fan, but its unfair that Apple should have some products in their stores that do not last long. Based on the other comments and reviews of others, I think I just got lucky with mine.

I have a mid 2010 macbook unibody, I barely had the use the magsafe at all because I charge it at night and and I have a good battery all during the day. well a couple days ago it just went out. the LED light dim green regardless of whether it was plugged up or not. so I bought a new one. The new one works great but the old one (coupled with some reviews) gives me the impression that I might be buying a new magsafe every year or so. Im hoping that my assumptions are wrong.

My magsafe adaptor that came with my 2008 macbook worked fine for about 2 years until just a few weeks ago it stopped fully working and U had to fidget with it ti get it working. Now it is completely broken. I guess the life of it varies because I had used it very heavily.

"New" power adapter works fine so far

    • Written by from Alexandria

9 months with my new MBP 13 and I haven't had any problems with the power adapter. Here are a couple of habits I've fallen into. (1) I don't charge my Mac until I get the 10 minute warning. This reduces the handling of the power adapter. (2) I don't use the fold-out ears to wrap the cord. I LOOSELY wrap the cord around the outside square of the power adapter and hold the cord in place with a rubber band. This puts minimum stress on the rather-stiff power cord. It also minimizes the kinks and sharp bends. (3) When connecting the power adapter, I allow the cord to unwrap and uncoil completely on its own before connecting to my Mac. Minimizing the twisting and bending of the rather-stiff cord has minimized its wear. I've also bought a second power adapter (no-name, not Apple) to leave at the office to further minimize wrapping and unwrapping the cord. These steps have worked well for me. They might work for you.

    Adapter

    • Written by from Santa Ana

From reading the reviews from other customers I have found that most of the problems originate from the way that the cable protruding from the power brick frays quickly. My adapter hasn't had that problem probably because I'm very careful with it. I wrap it in a special way (I leave a loop out before I start coiling it around the prongs) and that relieves the tension on the cable. The fact that my adapter almost never leaves my room and is on a tile floor almost all of the time might also be the reason that is hasn't broken yet (tile has a higher melting point than carpet or wood so it dissipates heat quickly -->happy power adapter). I did hold back a five star review because it is really warm to the touch when it's plugged in (crossing my fingers for a design that allows for better heat dissipation in the future). All in all, TREAT YOUR ADAPTER AWESOMELY = LONGER ADAPTER LIFE. That is all :]!

    They all break

    • Written by from Union

I had my Mac for a almost two years and the power cord stopped working, the price cheaper than one for my PC, and that one stopped working around the same time, so I guess inevitably they all break Apple or PC. However, I'm not sure if it broke because of design or being on the floor, all in all, it held up well and functions as described so I dont mind buying a new one...

Doesn't fail if you take care of it

    • Written by from New Paltz

I have had my Black MacBook since October of 2006. While I am on my third power cord, I never had an issue of the cord fraying or shorting out at the magsafe connector. I had them replaced under the AppleCare warranty with no problems, first one was buzzing and getting a little warm, and the second because the charge light didn't work. I probably would still be on the second one if the light worked. I have used my MacBook pretty much everyday in the nearly five years I have owned it, and bring it everywhere with me, everyday. I put a lot of wear and tear on the cord, the brick is all scratched up and the cord not so white anymore. I don't use the cord wrap on the brick though, I have always loosely coiled it, as I hate having kinks in cords and tightly winding it wears out the wires, making it more prone to breakage. Never have had an issue in 3 years.

One suggestion- if you notice the cord coming out of the strain relief at either the magsafe or the brick, take some white electrical tape, wrap the cord and the strain relief together, and that will help strengthen that weak point, and can give you extended use out of your adapter. If the wires start hanging out or sparking, do not simply tape it up, as it could be shorting under the tape and cause a fire. You can also take this suggestion as a precaution and tape up the strain reliefs when you buy a new adapter, and it may avoid premature failure.
