    Does not last.

    • Written by from harrisburg

Just Horrible. I am now on my THIRD power charger for this macbook pro. Seriously, the adapter breaks ALL of the time. My computer is apple. My 4 kids have either apple phones or iPods. We have an iPad. Don't you love us anymore? I really wish I could get a break with this Macbook and the charger. I have read other reviews as well and they almost always break. $79 is a lot of money for something that always breaks!!!

Cord Frays easily, yet another flawed design.

    • Written by from Paradise

I constantly recommend apple products because of the wonderful software, but the hardware and accessories are consistently garbage. This cord and charger, like previous models, eventually frayed at the junction where the cord meets the solid connector to the macbook. what did they expect would happen if they made a parallel connector where the cord can flex and be placed under extreme stress? Other laptop charger cords don't have these problems. The worst part is that apple simple ignores the problem whenever their products fail due to shoddy design. Thousands of customers are being made to shuck out 90 bucks to replace an inferior product, and apple just denies that the problem exists. Did you spend 300 dollars on apple care for your macbook? Too bad! Cords and chargers aren't covered (I wonder why). This is the sort of thing class action lawsuits are made of, and the first hint of one will see me on board. Multiple failed hard drives, cracked macbook bodies, and frayed cords. Enough with the garbage, Apple.

    4th charger, in 5 years

    • Written by from Columbus

I do not understand how these chargers are made, or why they cannot seem to last. BUT $80, $80 for a product that last about a year?

I have now had two chargers break at the tip(fray or bunch) , and one CATCH ON FIRE, and one where box that would heat up and burn anything it was sitting on. In the last 5 years I have spent $320 on chargers, and had to replace a battery in my laptop (another $80) due to the way one of my chargers was acting. I could have purchased a less expensive LAPTOP for this price. As a college student this is not something that is acceptable. I stopped taking my charger places and only charger my laptop on my desk, so its not how I am treating it. PLEASE APPLE, make a thicker, more usable cord. There is no reason your laptop cord should be the same size as your phone charger, or that there isn't an ability to only purchase one part of the cord.

I have all mac products and love them, but the chargers need to be fixed. Especially at this price, I can replace a phone charger if needed but the laptop is getting out of hand.

Aweful cord since the coating splits and falls off!

    • Written by from Clinton

I am on my 4th charger in 5 years. The coating simply splits and falls off for no reason. It'll likely take someone getting shocked by it and suing for Apple to pay attention to this. I only use it at my desk and the odd hotel room on trips. I can't believe Apple won't stand behind the flaw in these. Furthermore I can't believe they haven't found a way to fix this issue. Absolutely inexcusable!

My 3rd Power supply in 3 years

    • Written by from Titusville

My original power supply output failed in 9 months. and was replaced. My replacement cable insulation jacket split this week and I am ordering my third power supply today. You expect to pay more for Apple products but the expectation of high quality should justify that increased cost. The Quality of these power supplies is definitely not up to customer expectations.

    Fails after a few months

    • Written by from Madison

The weak link in the design is the thin cord that goes from the brick to the laptop. It gets pinched at the base, and fails after a few months. It's a waste and a rip off to have to pay $90 to replace the whole unit when only the cord is damaged. And the cord shouldn't be so fragile in the first place.

That part of the cord should be reenforced somehow, and it should plug in to the brick and be sold separately.

    Agreeing with many reviews

My MagSafe charger was bumped against the floor and stopped working. I would hope that a product that is designed with portability in mind would keep working after a bump. The soft white covering has peeled away and the wires are exposed and frayed on my newest charger. I seldom pack my cable to transport as it stays at my home. I am disappointed like many others.

    Not Good.

    • Written by from pewaukee

The insulation on this power cord as well as the one I got with my iphone began to split, and crumble and stretch. This is my third cord and probably the least abused as these days my computer sits on a table and I move it very little and practically never pack it up anymore. When I have power adapters for electronics from the 80s still working and the wires and insulation on this is just shot it's ridiculous. At $80 a piece I'd expect the thing to last more than a few months to a year.

    These cords split open

    • Written by from Goderich

Both myself and my boyfriend own MacBook Pros and both of our charger cables have managed to split open. The plastic/rubber around the cable itself has split open, we managed to tape it, to which it started to split under the tapping a few weeks later. It still works but now has tape covering roughly 5 inches of the cable. The other charger had the same issue, except that its now useless because the actual wires inside started to fray apart as well. The only way it works is to compress the cable together and hold it like that while it charges. Very disappointing.

    Apple,

You should do something on you power cord. seriously.... I like a lot of things on your product but power cord failed all the time and it was torn at the exactly same spot on my past 2 cords. it is not design problem. I love L shaped adapter. It is about material.
It is soft to touch when you touch at first but so flimsy. It doesn't need to be soft this much. you carry laptop to many places and each time cord moves. If you don't change this flimsy cord wrapping material, i might have to consider change my laptop to PC.
I want to give zero star if I can

How many folks need to say something before Apple takes action. The machines are undeniably superior but what good is this when you cannot get power to them. Withou Jobs the forecast of Apple looks sketch... Unless you start providing quality again.

    Breaks Easily

My last cable started to fray, and the coating broke so you can see the wiring inside. I've only had it for one year. Also, I lost the adapter, so it have to use the extension adapter, however eighty dollars is ridiculous.

Zero stars if that was an option

    • Written by from Toms River

Since I am here purchasing my FOURTH magsafe power adapter, I figured I would write a review. You read that correctly, I am currently on number four for one laptop. Two of them just stopped working with no rhyme or reason. The protective coating of the wire broke on the third to expose all of the inside components (which seemed kind of dangerous/fire hazard-y.) That one technically still works, but only at a 90 degree angle, and like I said, it seemed a bit dangerous. At $80 a pop, that is beyond ridiculous. Apple has quite the monopoly with these chargers and I am very sick of it. I would give the adapters themselves zero stars, if possible.

But why do I keep coming back? The power adapters of all of my previous (non-apple) laptops will probably outlive me, but the actual laptops died within a couple years. I wish apple could make an adapter to mirror the quality of their computers, because I am a customer for life. But seriously, make a better product or lower the price.

    Horrible "improvement"

    • Written by from Dover

I bought my macbook pro about 3 months ago. Neither the cable nor the charger itself have broken. But from reading people's reviews here, I am expecting it to do so soon.
However, the reason I am writing this review is a different one. Before purchasing the macbook pro I had the white macbook. I had it for 5 years and was really happy with it. Among many other things the magsafe was one of its strong points. It was perfect. You could work with your mac sitting on your lap without it unplugging. The L-shape was genius. It never unplugged when it wasn't supposed to. However, when I accidentally got caught up in the cable, in unplugged, just like it should.
So, there we have a completely perfect and satisfying product. Why the heck did apple feel the need to change it then? I can't work with my mac on my lap anymore because the adapter constantly unplugs (it's called a LAPtop after all, not sure apple designers are aware of that) and even if I put it on an even surface it still unplugs sometimes. The magnet seems to be a lot weaker than that of the first magsafe...
I can really just shake my head at this new magsafe. I hope they'll fix this. I would gladly spend the 79 bucks on a new magsafe if it is like the first one. Get your act together, Apple, Steve wouldn't not have approved of this!

    • Written by from San Antonio

Have been a customer since 1987, but it seems the quality is going down with the more customers you get!

I'm on charger #3 -- As soon as I took it out of the package I taped both ends where the cord breaks. (choosing to save another $79 replacement over beauty....Steve would NOT approve!!)

It's been 4 months, and the charge light is flickering on and off. I removed the tape, and surprise! The cord is breaking again!!!!

Good thing I own APL stock....at least I'm getting a return there!

I don't understand how a company can hear complaint after complaint about a product and as its solution, offers the same inferior product. Apple is a brand that promotes brand exclusivity through the functions/features of its products and accessories. This is a smart business plan and lets users access cutting edge features that are user friendly. We pay a premium to access these features by buying Apple products. But in this instance, it's only a drawback for the MagSafe Power Adapter and it makes me feel like an **expletive** for buying any of this company's products. Apple has software updates to fix bugs that users report to make a better product for its software. Yet when Apple hears its consumers' reports on the inferior quality on its chargers, its solution is to ignore it and sell a cheap product for a huge mark up!! These adapters can't stand up to the everyday use that its require of them, most barely lasting a year. And when I try to heed GeniusBar's advice to prolong the longevity of the product, any advice given to me fails to prolong the lifespan. And at least once sometimes twice a year I am stuck with a perfectly good computer that I cannot use because one of the least technical aspects of the system doesn't function.

    Feeling betrayed

    • Written by from Glendale

I've purchased four of these in two years. They last roughly six months of normal use. How do they break? The materials are so cheaply made that the cord cracks, frays, or otherwise just falls apart. And at $80.00 a pop, I really expect better.

Apple. Seriously. I usually love your products. I have (to this point) been a devoted fan of your computers. But I now have to consider whether or not I want to deal with your god-awful, horribly made power cords when deciding to how to spend my money. And frankly, I'm not sure its worth it.

I'm a lifelong mac user who is seriously considering switching to PC over a power cord. That's how bad these are.

Do NOT buy MBP -- Adapter FAILURE--Dangerous!

    • Written by from Burnaby

Apple might make good electronic products but sadly, this cannot be said for their accessories. The power adapter for the MBP 13" is defective. I have taken extremely good care of all my products including the adapter. I'm always careful about how I wrap up the cord when traveling so as not to put pressure on the weak end of the cord that is prone to snapping or fraying due to it's poor design. When this happened to my friend's cord, her's smoked first which is extremely dangerous. I was there when it happened and something could have caught on fire! As for mine, it simply snapped even though I was all the more vigilant to prevent mine from going the way her's did. But sadly it has snapped. First I noticed a tiny buckling or bulge on the cord and then all of a sudden it snapped open. My Toshiba laptop cord is just over 12 years old and both the laptop and cord are perfectly fine. Don't buy MBP or any of their laptops that uses adaptors with weak and poorly designed cords unless they change their adapter or their policy on replacement otherwise you'll keep paying $90 every time this adapter breaks. I'm done with Apple.
