    Does not work

    • Written by from Reston

I have tried installing 2 of these in the last few days. Both times it will not extend the network connection. I get an error stating "An unexpected error has occurred, please try again". Afterwards the router does not show in the Airport utility window. It only returns after I reset the router by pushing the button.

I suspected the salesman knew there was a problem for the device. He assumed I wanted to return for a refund, not exchange. My desire to try a second airport seem to caught him off guard. Maybe should have taken his hint and just asked for a refund. I am trying it now and will likely return it in the morning.

Now, how do I get my older version back from my cousin??

If you had the last one, don't upgrade

    • Written by from langley

This unit forces you to always have the 2.4 GHz radio on, even if you want to disable it. For me, I don't like it because I have too many 2.4 GHz devices causing interference. It still only has a 10/100 Mbps connection at the back, so your wireless N, whether you use the 5 GHz band or not, will always be choked back to 100 Mbps, which fine for most HD video, but can be a problem in some cases. The only improvement is that the entire unit doesn't need to be plugged into the wall, but that's not worth the upgrade, there are better non apple products out there.

    Returned the first day

    • Written by from germantown

I bough this hoping to extend my Wi-Fi, but sadly it failed. It never connected to my router in the first place, I rested it and restored it to factory default 3 times. I tried a lot of times and it never connected. Very disappointing with this product. I looked at the booklet in side and look at my router. The router was perfectly capable but every time my iPhone said "An unexpected error has accored, please try again"

    Unusable - constantly drops network

    • Written by from Toronto

Purchased this to extend the network from my Time Capsule and in "extend a network" mode it is constantly dropping the network requiring a reboot to join again then drops again after 5-15 minutes. Works slightly better in "join a network" mode. Had to go back to my previous generation Airport Express which isn't as fast but is perfectly reliable.

There are many with the same issues yet no firmware update has been issued by Apple, Google "new airport express extend drops network" to see the scope of the issue.

    Airport Paper weight

    • Written by from murfreesboro

Just bought a new AirPort Extreme hooked it up and set up the wireless, easy. I tried to connect a printer to it and there is no menu or setup to do so after selecting the base station. Then I tried to expand network and it locked up and I can't reset it. So now I own a $200 paper weight. I would give it no stars but I can't.

    Dont wasted your money

    • Written by from cheektowaga

It slow down my actual internet speed connection. does not support airport printing. if you connect any other wireless router you can see the difference in speed. So if you are going to spend this kind of money do it in a better wireless router, just because is apple in this case, it does not really perform.

I wish it would work consitently

    • Written by from San Francisco

We have a complete apple network. Consisting of a new AP Extreme and two airport expresses, and my itunes and OS is up to date.
Literally every other time I go to connect I get the spinning wheel of death for a second then it doesn't connect.
If i fully reboot my entire network it works fine for a couple of days.
I would save my money and not buy this.

    sad sad sad...

    • Written by from Los Angeles

ive always loved the airport express line for ease of use, ease of extending the wi-fi network around the house, and ESPECIALLY for Airplay...Airplay has been pretty much the center piece for me buying these things. This new iteration of the Express has major dropout issues.
Airplay just hiccups and loses connection CONSTANTLY.
Planning on returning these to the Apple store ASAP unless Apple releases a firmware fix within the next two days that absolutely fixes it.

    Airplay Not Reliable

    • Written by from Midlothian

The only way you would spend $99 on this router is if you want to use the airplay feature. Sadly, that feature does not work.

After anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours streaming to the airport express, iTunes will start skipping and eventually disconnect from the airport. The only way to reset it is to either restart the computer or toggle the airplay feature off, then back on, on the airport express.

This problem has been well-documented on message boards for several years and it greatly decreases the value of the product. If you plan on using this to play music for longer than 1-2 hours at a time, don't buy it.

    Extremely unreliable.

    • Written by from Houston

Continually drops airplay connection--no way to reset other than restarting the router and resetting airplay selection on computer. The problem is well-documented on the various boards with no solution.

Worst Apple product I have ever seen!

    • Written by from Banning

First router I have ever bought, they say it sets right up. Well, after 2 nights of trying EVERYTHING on this planet, reading for a million hours and it just doesn't work! I think I'm going to go out back and use it for target practice! After having a bad iPad experience, and now this, I would have to say I believe Apple is going downhill!

    Poor wi:fi signal

    • Written by from Tulsa

I am a big fan of apple products, but this AirPort Express is just bad.
Easy set up, beautiful and fancy. I bought it for my apartment on campus but it did not surprised me. My University's wi:fi is more powerful than this router, even when I sit with my mac close to this router. $99 was not worth it, I prolly just going to buy the Extreme base station and sell this product on Amazon.

    This pains me, but....

    • Written by from South Portland

I'm a big Apple fan - iMac (2), MacBook Pro (2), iPad (2), iPhone (2), the whole works.

I purchased two of these when they came out, primarily because the ethernet out port enabled me to connect my DVR to to Internet without having to wire to a pretty difficult spot. (The second AirPort Express I bought for my parents, to replace a generic cheap wireless router.)

I mostly use my AirPort Express to stream music to my stereo using AirTunes. I had been using a previous generation AirPort Express for this, and it worked flawlessly. Never any drops or glitches. I've got a Time Capsule and two other AirPort Expresses in my house, and they all work well.

The 2012 AirPort Express is constantly dropping from my network, even though it is about 10 feet from the AirPort Extreme, in a straight sight line. My father reports that the same thing is happening with his, noticeable even though he is only surfing the Web. His serves as the primary router, connected directly to his cable modem.

I returned mine for another model, which the Apple Store graciously provided even though I was beyond the return time, but it is more of the same. I'm hoping for a firmware update that will fix this; there is a lot to like about the new model.

You can see that others are having this problem by checking the Apple support community for the thread "AirPort Express (2012) drops network connection after ~1 hour...ideas?"

    Horrible product

    • Written by from Bellingham

Simply does not do what promisses. It is useful only to extend the wireless network, nothing else. To share hard drive and printers is terrible. Airtunes does not play the sound, and when it plays cuts the music. I am really disappointed.

Will not work with third party router.

    • Written by from Louisville

I can not believe that I can not use this for airplay, piggy backed (client mode) onto a third party router on my network.

But that is what they told me at the "genius" (not what I would call the dude) bar. They said I could not use it with a third party router.
I don't believe that, but I could not get it to work consistently and I can not seem to get any support.

    Why not a modem router?!!!

    • Written by from ENCINO

I love the device from the moment I saw it in your keynote, but why apple, why not making a modem router after so long???!!!!
I even order it by mistake and I realized, I was so much in luv with this device I even didn't pay attention to this important factor!
Anyway to some people like me having a separate modem & router its just not a case!
I give 1 star to get your attention apple, but as you may know all your devices with all limitation they have are all the way 5 stars!!!
