    Great remote for Apple TV

This remote is great for the Apple TV. It is simple, responsive, and sleek. Make sure you keep liquids away from it (spilled coffee on mine and it no longer works). I'm now looking to buy another one for my Apple TV.

Many people on here seem to have problems with lack of usability with OS X Lion. If you are looking for a good way to control your iTunes away from your computer and you own an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, try using the free remote app. Front row was slow and obnoxious.

Overall, a simple but responsive remote. Would be more perfect if the clickwheel is not just the design.

I'm sure it will be of use to someone....

Like others here, I thought this was wonderful! I could control my videos/music/podcasts while on my x-trainer across the room, or just relaxing on the lounge, but since upgrading to Lion it is useless to me. I can either exercise to the same song or podcast over and over or control volume - big whoop! I'm sure it is of use in Keynote (from what I've read) and Apple TV, but for those of us who don't want/have Apple TV, this has created a HUGE hole in my life.

Current Mac OS X drops advertised functionality

The current information on this remote says that you can press the Menu button on the remote at Macs made after 2005 and it will launch Front Row. Well I have a new MacBook Pro, and I paid for the remote, and the Menu button most certainly does not do anything. Sure I can change volume, but so what, I wanted it for Front Row. The one star is for false advertising; I am very surprised and disappointed in Apple here.

    Great Amazing Product!

I love it!!! Not only is it very good looking, but it works like magic. Even if you cover it with your hand and point it in the other direction it will still work! The batteries work for a entire year even with daily use. I also have downloaded "Sofa Control" which makes the remote even better by being able to control the mouse and do other really useful features. Overall I think that the remote could use the iPod's click-wheel technology but other than that it is an extraordinary Apple product.

Good. But don't stray far from Mac

Great device for Apple TV, MacBook Pro when you are close to the device (less 10ft). I do many presentations on Keynote at conferences/ events and usually my Mac is on the podium near me - no problem, but you can't walk the stage. If you walk more than 10ft it doesn't work well at all or doesn't respond at all to forward your slides, animate videos etc...

If you want to walk the stage as you speak this is not the device to use, if you are stationary or next to the Mac- works great.

    Lastly, battery life is poor.

I use mine for home Apple TV or to rehearse my presentations. I have another remote for when I am on stage that gives me great coverage +60ft.

    Why no mute button?

    • Written by from Seattle

I mean really. I know you like to have them look all spacey and minimalist, but seriously, a mute button is super helpful in a remote control. Just double it up with the menu button, make it a single tap and menu a double tap. Come on.

I thought this remote was great when I initially got it, but had no idea that it could put your computer to sleep! Why isn't in a description somewhere?! Once I found this out, I upgraded my thoughts to amazing!

Wish there was a way to exit Front Row quicker than pressing 'menu' a bunch of times.

Total waist if you have the original

I got the new remote and was all excited to try it out on my ipod touch. I had a dock for it, and it came with one of the original remotes. I thought with this one I could select certain song and playlists, but when I got it, It could only do what the original one could. I even did a test, and they both worked the exact same way. If you have the original (which comes free with most macs and docks) don't spend $19.99 on this one.

I got one of these waaay back in 2007 with my macbook pro. It's great for presentations and media, but the most fun I've had with it is making other people's computers fall asleep and change their volume. On a college campus, it's pranks galore!

If your using this remote with a mac look for bettertouchtool, it is a must and infinitely extends the functionality of this remote by allowing you to customize the commands, these controls can be application specific so it can be used as a powerpoint remote etc.

I love this remote. It is sleek and stylish. It works great in every way once you learn to navigate the control. The only downside of the remote is that the buttons for the most part are level with the whole surface to give it a nice smooth feeling where the old remote had raised edges. The new remote home button and select button are beveled in to make it easier to locate in the dark. I do prefer this remote to the older white model remote. A great buy, just to bad apple doesn't give them out free with the Macbooks any more.

The feel on the hand is great, and it works from up to 30 feet away! Very easy to handle, just like everything Apple!

Remote works great as advertised. A MAJOR suggestion for improvement would be to add an integrated laser pointer. That is all this product is missing.

    New Apple Remote

    • Written by from La Mesa

I've had the new Apple Remote for about two weeks now. I find it to be very stylish, My Apple TV responds quickly to operation of the controls of the new remote, response is faster than my old Apple Remote. I am guessing the ir lamp is brighter than the old one. I find the center of the control wheel operates as a button as well. It operates the pause and play functions like the new button that is marked with the Play/Pause symbols.

The only thing I find that could be an improvement is the rocker ring control, which is flush with the surface of the aluminum body of the Remote. This makes it more difficult to operate by feel and is cause for pushing the center button instead of the control on the rocker ring. It would be easier to operate the intended function if the ring were to be raised like the previous control.

My wife lost our remote in a recliner and it got all smushed up when she forced it closed. The whole thing is pretty bent up and the battery slot won't open. There are some fairly large scratched up chunks of the casing gone, but miraculously the thing still works. We'll be purchasing another one to replace it anyway so we don't cut ourselves, but this little thing can take a serious beating and keep right on working.

    Okay, but no on-screen menus?

    • Written by from Fort Wayne

I'm not sure of this is a design fault of the dock or the remote, but when I purchased the remote to control a 5th-Gen nano on a Universal Dock hooked to my entertainment system, I expected the capability of bringing up the nano's menus on screen and using the remote to switch between functions and select videos. Doesn't work. The best one can do is select a video from the nano, then use the remote to stop and start. Com'on Apple, you can do better than that.

I could tell I hadn't wasted a cent when I went to setup the remote, why? Because their was no setup literally works out of the box: no on button, batteries included and best of all no pairing needed to work but is an option if you want added security.
Something else few people know is that this remote is the best for Keynotes, it's not bulky and all the included buttons do the job when presenting a Keynote.
Arguably one of the best iPod/iPhone/Mac accessories in both usage and design.
