    Quite Useless

This apple dock has been a major disappointment. As other reviewers have mentioned, it only holds the ipad portrait in a wobbly position.

I recommend getting a study stand over this dock. It costs only 5 dollars, and can hold the ipad in either direction, while leaving space for the ports.

    Won't work in the case?!

Apple's designers really did make a terrible mistake here. I too pre-ordered both and now likely won't ever use the dock. Glad I didn't order the docking keyboard - which was really close to doing...this is a terrible idea.

    The perfect dock

This product does exactly what it is supposed to, and does it well. The angle is perfect. I've used on both glass and wood surfaces, and the dock didn't slide around. Everyone who is complaining about having to take their iPad out of it's case are the same people who are mad that they have to plug their laptops in to charge them - that's how it works - get over it.

    Does what it's supposed to

While it would be nice to see some features mentioned in other reviews, I think it's only fair to review the product based on it's description on the Apple storefront and how it lives up to that.

After reading the description, I knew the iPad wasn't going to be able to dock in landscape mode. I knew this was pretty much a simple dock that would allow me to place the iPad in a portrait mode. While it wasn't clear whether or not the iPad would be able to be docked while in its case, I wasn't counting on this. I agree with other reviewers that not having to remove the iPad from it's case would be nice, but it's by no means a deal-breaker. All I was looking for was a stable way to provide a fast charge for the iPad beyond merely plugging it into an outlet and laying it down on a table.

The charger works well. It charges fast. It does what it says it will do. Sure, there could be some improvements, but, by and large, I'm satisfied with the dock. It is quite heavy for it's size. That adds stability for the iPad while it is docked. I was actually surprised by the weight of the unit when I unboxed it. I also had no trouble with the unit sliding around on the desk.

For times when I want to set my iPad down and view it in a landscape mode, I'll use the iPad case because that is a product that was designed to do this.

Poor design Disapointment for an apple product

    • Written by from Stony Brook

The Dock is a dispointment for its poor usability, and was not designed with the user in mind:
    1) there is no alignment feature that allows to dock the iPad without carefully aligning the connectors
    2) the dock is lighter than the retaining force of the connector, so when you pick the iPad, the dock comes with it, unless you secure it in place with the second hand
    3) the base surface is minimal (7cm by 7cm), making the assembly of the dock with the iPad not very stable and prone to tilt on the side or to the front
    4) the material is white plastic, that could correspond to the ipod 1st generation design language, but not really the black and aluminium design of the Ipad
    5) last but not least, the iPad with the Apple Case is NOT able to dock with the Apple Dock. shouldn't it ? I still have not seen any disclaimer on the dock or the case page...

Conclusion, we need a dock for this product, to be able to conveniently charge and display the device, but this one is not the right one, for me at least. I expect more from my favorite brand.

People have already said it, but I wanted to get in my rating. The dock does not work with the case. I pre-ordered both of them with my iPad and never dreamed Apple would do this without saying anything. Boo!

This item works great, along with the VGA adapter, just wish you could charge it when docked with the VGA cable connected to your TV.

I have an iPhone 3GS that I keep docked during the day while I work at my desk. The iPad dock serves the same purpose. Keeps the iPad within arms reach, standing upright, and allows my iPad to charge while I work and use it when it's docked. Also has a line-out for stereo which is cool if someone needed it.

    Way Overpriced

It does the job of holding the iPad in place, though it is a little wobbly. It only holds the iPad in the portrait position, not landscape. Would have been nice if Apple had built the iPad to have a dummy slot on the side so it could be docked (but not charged) in landscape position, too. I'm guessing if you're planning on watching a movie, you want some other kind of dock to hold it horizontally.

Apple wisely suggests getting the IPad cover case. This is almost a must. However the IPad Dock will not work effectively with the IPad Case. It is impossible to make an effective connection without carving on the cover case. Save your money and work out another solution. A disappointed user

    Sticky Dock Not Practical

    • Written by from Sandy

My complaint is the iPad ‘sticks’ to the dock, so you have to use TWO hands to remove from the dock! I wanted to be able to walk by the iPad while in the charging dock and ‘grab’ it and go...but no, you have to use TWO hands to remove the iPad from the dock...I’ve already started walking past the ‘thing’ and not grabbing the Pad :(

Wants all the fuss? This dock works well. It's stable, firm, and has a sturdy connection. It sets at a good angle and volume works while docked. Only wish it worked with protector sleeve on.

    iPad Dock not compatible w/Case

    • Written by from Tempe

It makes sense that most people would get the iPad cover to protect their new "baby." However, the iPad will not sync in the Dock with the cover on. Does not make sense.

Ok, the iPhone idea won't work!

It is a revolutionary product with a archaic dock.

Simply said, this dock is inefficient and worries me of my 600 dollars falling and slamming on the ground. The bottom is worse than the iphone dock (or at least seems worse because of the weight difference). In the end lets try and get a revolutionary dock for a revolutionary product.

    Worthless!

Save your money on this one. Apple dropped the ball on this dock (and their case). For these two items not to work together is criminal. Or maybe smart business. You buy the iPad, case and dock. You cannot charge/dock while in the case so you remove. Dock is flimsy enough that you knock dock and iPad off table. Since it is user error, buy new iPad. Is this how they will reach a million units sold this year?

Seriously though, wait as I am sure there are a multitude of companies working on compatible dock and case.

    volume problem

while i like having the iPad on the dock,
once an audio cable is connected to the dock the volume control seems to be disabled in the iPad. so there is no 'local' control on the iPad.

disappointing as this is an apple product.

Pointless if you use a case

Thought that Apple of all "designers" would have thought that those of us who use cases might like to dock our iPads as well - instead of making the support bar have enough room for even the Apple designed case or adjustable so that any case (or an iPhone even) could be used on this dock made it an immediate return and exchange for a spare power adapter.

    Could be better

I also agree that there is some side to side movement when the iPad is docked.
I also find it sometimes awkward to dock, would have been better to have some guides on each side to help dock which would also limit the side to side movement.

iPad is stable, but cord is too short

    • Written by from Los Angeles

The iPad dock looks great. I have it on a bookshelf in my office and have a slide show of family photos running while I charge it, I have had two people who did not realize it was an iPad comment on what a great digital picture frame I had.
My iPad is stable and does not wobble or threaten to fall at all when I put it in my dock. I would have liked to place it a bit further from the outlet, but the cord is pretty short, otherwise, no complaints.
