Time Capsule - 1 TB
Very frustrating device
Written by JP from WEST JORDAN
Dec 4, 2009
After what I thought was an easy and intuitive setup I have only been able to reliably connect to the guest network wirelessly. Every device I have (Mini, Wii, Home PC, Work PC) can see the primary network and attempt to connect. Connections to it are sporadic and never last longer than 30 minutes at best. At which point it is disconnected. 1+ hrs on the phone with support yielded no solution besides a possible, irreparable "hardware conflict between the Mac Mini wireless adapter and the Mac Mini processor"?! Steer clear of this product!

Time Capsule - 2TB is extremely cool and helpful. My family is soon to have four macs, and this device has more than enough space to do that. It works well, is fast, easy to set up, and Time Machine is really cool!

Easy change over
Written by FF from Hamilton
Dec 2, 2009
This 1 TB time capsule has replaced my 500 GB first generation time capsule. Not due to failure of the latter (zero problems in that regard), but because I need more wireless range and a bigger back-up drive. Both items, the 500 GB was bought in March'08 and the 1 TB in November '09, have worked flawlessly. My settings were simply copied over when I set up the 1 TB and everything has worked well. Newer TC is much quieter when running the HD and back-up transfer speed, both connected with an ethernet cable and wirelessly, is significantly faster. Seems to run and stay cooler than first generation model as well.

Flawless

The title of my review tells the tale. From the start, my new 1TB-Time Capsule has performed with absolute precision. Set-up could not be easier. No noise, no excess heat, it just works, and does so quite well. Job well done Apple.

Easy to use and quick to set up
Written by MM from Peoria

I switched to Mac about 2 years ago and since then I have had nothing but bliss. The time capsule works wonderfully and sets up in minutes. I cant imagine what others are going through but my tc works great with my Mac and my wife's PC, which we are looking for a new mac for her in another month or so. Really have no complaints, Apple has this figured out

Wireless connection problems with iphone
Written by DR from Westbank
Nov 27, 2009
I switched everything in my house to Mac over the past 2 years because I like the quality of the Apple products. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station that works great, but when I upgraded to the Time Capsule, it was a wate of time & money. After following all directions & calling customer support, the Time Capsule would not let my iphone connect to the intenet unless I was within 5ft of the unit. Any further away, and I would loose signal. My Macbook & iMac would connect flawlessly, but it was impossible to connect my iphone. I switched back to the Airport Extreme (with the same setting) and there hase been no connection problems. I should have saved the money and bought a generic external HD for backup.

An excellent all-in-one router/NAS/printer solution
Written by PL from Whitby
Nov 27, 2009
I think this is a great product, and connects easily with all my Windows PC's, Mac laptops, and iPods without problems. The range of N-wireless is great (although the 5GHz freq is disappointing). I also use this a my central file server for all machines, and being able to convert my USB printer into a network-enabled printer accessible by all computers is a nice bonus. I would definitely recommend this as an excellent all-in-one router/NAS/printer solution.

Time Capsule - 1 TB
a must
Written by MK from San Antonio
Nov 27, 2009
I've now had my time capsule for 2 years. I have had minimal to no problems. I have 3 computers connected to it, two wirelessly. I have 3 printers and a scanner connected to it. And I have the TC connected, wirelessly, to a airport base station (forget which one--the one that looks like the TC), and it carries the signal down our 150 foot lot.
This constantly backs up my files on all three computers, allowing me to sleep at night.
I also like the software connection--which you won't find on any other backup system, I bet--where if there is a problem (e.g., the cable company signal stops for a while), then I can reset the modem from my computer (without having to unplug things).
It works like a gem. My only complaint might be that it gets hot. But the heat it generates is nothing like the heat my Pro Mac (8GB memory, 3 HDs) generates. That thing runs so hot I had to buy an inroom air conditioner from costco to counter balance the heat my computer generates. But the TC, always being on and running, does generate a bit of heat.
Anyway, I thought a review by someone who has owned one of these for 2 years may be helpful. I see the biggest complaint anyone has is a dead machine. If that's the only complaint, then great. Apple has the best return and replacement policy around. So, if that happens, they'll send you another. But functionally, it is a dream and a blessing.30 of 33 people found this useful

Timed Death not Time Capsule
Written by LB from West Point
Nov 26, 2009
Well, if you are looking for a safe place to keep your photos, documents, and other electronic data, the Time Capsule is not it. My TC lasted only a few months before it died, and ironically only one day after reading about this very problem. It is a shame, I really like Apple and its products. I hope they will take care of this issue. Stay away from this product until they fix this issue.

Set up with Verizon FIOS - No problem!
Written by MA from Stoneham
Nov 25, 2009
Three things were holding me back on this purchase 1) the much reported overheating of vintage 2008 TCs 2) will it work well with Verizon FIOS wireless router 3) price. I am putting my faith in Apple on the overheating issue since the new model TC has not been out long enough to know for sure. Hard to believe they wouldn't fix a known problem from a previous gen product. The initial set up was super easy, pretty much plug and play. The only configuration change on the FIOS router was to turn off the wireless feature. This step is a piece of cake as long as you know your router i.p., User ID and Password. Be sure to select 'create a new network' and not 'bridge' mode when going through TC software set up. Otherwise you may lose some TC functionality. Also, follow set up guide and hard wire TC to computer for the initial Time Machine back up. My wireless network was pretty fast before (802.11G) and I am really amazed that it is now blazing fast and the wireless range has increased substantially as well. Given drop in external HD costs, the product is a little pricey but for me not having to be on the phone with support for hours on end is well worth the extra cost.

GREAT
Written by LL from Simsbury

I just got the new Time Capsule 1TB. it works flawlessly... and i dont kno what people are talking about it getting hot... i backed up over 100gb all at once and it only got warm... just like any harddrive would and like every TB external i ever had... i actually had a maxtor which felt like it was on fire compared to this one. Im very impressed. and the network speeds are extreamly fast. i cannont complain at all.. i also hooked up my canon MP620 to it and it made it work wirelessly without a problem (which if people who run Snow Leapord and have that printer can tell u, making it wireless is a complete hassle, because the lack of drivers and such.) but with this it hooked up wirelessly in less than 5 min. i love it.

I have had my time machine for a few months now and it is amazing. It works exactly as advertised. In fact, my internet connection sped up once I started using it. Way better then my Linksys router and being able to print from any computer in the house without having to buy a wireless printer is a great bonus. I have and will continue to recommend this product to everyone I know.

Works Like a Charm
Written by KM from Portland
Nov 23, 2009
I've had my 1 TB since it came out almost 2 years ago. I bought it the first week it came out, I think in March of '08 or something. I back up my 750GB iMac & 250 GB laptop, all wirelessly. I'd definitely buy another, but I've been blessed with no computer problems ever. I did alot of research before buying it, before knowing it was even going to exist, I was looking at Lecie drives (and I have one), every company out there has a device that has failed, and people get really upset, all you can do is hope you stay on the luckyside. I think this is a great device and love that it's all wireless and hidden: if I happen to run into a bad case scenario and some one breaks into my house, they won't find my time capsule, so I'll at least have that! I rest a little bit easier. Thanks again Apple.

Time Capsule: Easy To Set Up and Forget
Written by AB from COLUMBIA
Nov 23, 2009
I've used several of Apple's wireless network devices. Time Capsule is much like the others, as far as ease of setup and features offered. All offer some sort of security which is easy to set up. All offer super compatibility with your Apple products coupled with fast set up to create a wireless and ethernet home net. So far my Time Capsule has run like a clock and with little interference of maintenance needed. I did have some problems running an attached external hard drive for a short period, but after an upgrade the function improved. I am able to once again have net storage available to my home net. Time capsule is also easy to set up to support Back To Mac and Screen Sharing. I also use Elgato and an attached external SATA raid drive on my MacPro to enhance our experience and offer a wider variety of home entertainment. It also plays nice with our AppleTV and Airport Express Base Station running Airtunes.
Only real annoyance to me is that sometimes when Time Capsule runs Time Machine it sometimes impacts the performance of my Macs. I notice minute freezes or long loading pages and then notice that Time Capsule is running.
Anyway you will not regret buying a Time Capsule. Apple stands behind their products and will work with their customers to repair or replace items. This is a solid network router which also provides seamless back ups.21 of 26 people found this useful

Mine lasted 19 months
Written by RB from Beaverton
Nov 23, 2009
I bought my 500 GB Time Capsule in April 2008. It died 11/09, after running continuously for 19 months. Strange how so many people are seeing it die at the same point in its life. It runs pretty hot, due to no fan, which reduces the noise, but that may have reduced its life span. A hard disk should last at least five years. I have liked the TC and never had any problems until it died. It is a nice mix of network storage and wireless access point, and works almost invisibly with client Macs. You can also use it as a router in conjunction with a DSL or cable modem. I use mine on a small office network, and decided to get another, since I can't think of an easy alternative, and it's so easy to set up. I hope they have a different brand drive in the new one that will last longer. If it had lasted longer, I would have given it 5 stars.

Excellent (apart from the sudden death syndrome)
Written by MJ from St Albans
Nov 23, 2009
My Time Capsule lasted twenty months and then died. Apple have agreed that there was a problem with a number of these (?all early models?) and are replacing it FOC.
Whilst it was running it backed my files up quietly in the background whilst providing a secure Wifi network for all me devices and acting as a server for two printers. Nary a problem.
As long as the heat/sudden death problem has now been resolved these are excellend pieces of kit.25 of 30 people found this useful

Most of the bad reviews in here are for the old Time Capsule.
Written by BB from Westerville
Nov 23, 2009
Anybody saying their product almost a year old, or longer died, or their 500GB product died is reviewing the old Time Capsule. The new dual band Time Capsules are great. The older ones have had a failure rate. People please know what you bought before writing reviews. BTW I still have my 500GB 1st gen, and no issue, I am selling it and buying a Dual band TC today, because I am buying a second Mac also, and need the 1TB drive to do 2 backups for separate machines.

Nice product; good value
Written by RB from Georgetown
Nov 22, 2009
I think overall this is a good product. However, I would make sure to let there be plenty of air movement around this product. Don't stack a bunch of stuff on it. I installed a USB fan for a laptop under mine because it seems to get pretty warm. As far as the product goes I am always amazed at how well Apple products are packaged. Very nice in deed. Two points of criticism? Why wouldn't you include a nice 18-inch or 2 foot RJ45 patch cable. This would add 35 to 60 cents in COGS and would be a great addition to round out a premium product. I think someone just missed the idea. Also, no Apple stickers?
As far as the previous model 18 month warning -- here is my take. This is a new generation and prior models have no bearing on whether this model will last or not. I have faith that Apple makes a fantastic product and that while it is unfortunate that some experience premature failure I would guess there are hundreds, if not thousands of others that have used their time capsules for far longer than 18 months; they just don't have a bone to pick about it..ergo.. no post here.13 of 14 people found this useful
