Best Home Networking!
Written by DS from San Diego
Dec 14, 2009
I tried to create home network using Linksys equipment, external and networked drives and found myself managing, fixing network issues, repairing it about 50% of the time - it was frustrating and on top of that it was very slow. I barely used my networked drives because it was extremely slow to copy files onto it. one word - Useless. So i decided to accept my losses and get this router - setup was really easy, i connected all my USB drives to it using USB hub, connected printer and about 2-2,5 years later after not touching anything or changing any settings everything still works and i am writing this review :) Seriously, i don't remember last time i was frustrated with network issues or fixing anything - after i initially set everything up (took MUCH MUCH less time to set it up compare to linsys box) everything still works and i didn't have a single issue. Copying my HD home videos to my USB networked drives is almost as fast as having them connected to my laptop directly, maybe a little slower but i don't have to get up from my couch after making a movie to copy it to a drive that sits in my closet :) Streaming 9GB home video from wireless drive connected to AirPort box actually works!!! if you looking for a new wireless box or looking to replace your existing - just buy it. :)

Works Great

I use it on a small mixed OS network and it works just fine. I plugged a external hard drive and it works great as a media server!! (like time capsule but cheaper... in my case having too many externals)

Finally, a router that works.
Written by MM from Saratoga Springs

I never leave reviews but I have used this router now for a few months and I'm delighted to report that IT JUST WORKS!. I have gone through a number of non-Apple routers over the past few months and I always have to restart them (at least once a day). They are all unnecessarily PC-like with a bunch of stupid settings that arent user friendly. This router costs about double other routers but can I repeat?... IT JUST WORKS. Except one thing - If you are going to attach an external drive DO NOT use firmware 7.4.2. Downgrade to 7.4.1. The newest firmware causes external drives to inexplicably pause forever. (OK, no product is 100% perfect)

Great Job, Apple!

I currently own two network base sttaions from Apple --> one AirPort Extreme (latest) and one AirPort Express (also latest). Both integrate seemlessly and extend the range of my wireless network. Everything is working just PERFECTLY!!! (like I've never seen it from any other vendor before!) All my wireless devices contacted immediately, I NEVER have any breakdowns. Besides that I got a wireless print server and Wireless NAS for FREE ... Thanks!

Great for expanding your network with Airport Expresses
Written by SF from Colorado Springs
Dec 10, 2009
Set-up was easy. Adding additional AirPort Expresses to expand the network was easy. Now I can stream iTunes to all the Airport Expresses in the house (I have them connected to my entertainment system's input and to powered external speakers). ITunes plays on the iMac, and I can pipe it to any one or combination of several speakers in the house attached to the Expresses, and my iPhone acts as the remote control.
Also, by plugging my Xbox 360 directly into the Airport Express's Cat5 port, I was able to eliminate my 360's over-priced Microsoft wireless network adaptor and sold it on Ebay. I have a better and faster wireless connection for my XBox 360 now via Airport Express as part of my expanded network from my Extreme Base Station.
My USB external WD MyBook Studio II mirrored 2TB drive plugged into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station works with TimeMachine on my iMac as well as allowing me to access the drive for external storage from my iMac or my older Windows laptop.
Overall, VERY slick how all this worked so well together and with relative ease. I was highly impressed and would highly recommend. Overall speed is decent too.9 of 11 people found this useful

I love these things!
Written by SR from Lincoln

I now have two of these. The first one acts like a normal wireless router. The second one I purchased because my new HD TV and Blu ray player can be connected by a cat5 cable to the internet for streaming movies and updates. I set up the second one to extend the first one in about 10 minutes. The first one is downstairs and my TV setup is upstairs. The second airport also gives my wireless network a boost upstairs in my house. I never had a dead spot but I sure do have a maximum signal now.

Solved my wireless problems.

I moved from a 1000 SF house to a 2000 SF house recently. I had a Super G wireless router and I thought it was a good one and would work. I set up a work PC along with my MacBook and all looked good. Then, I tried to VPN to the office and work on the PC. The signal would fluctuate so much I would lose the connection and have to reconnect and hope for a better signal. This happened several times a day. I went online and looked at N routers. The reviews said Airport Extreme was rated the highest so I happily went with Apple. Today I worked wireless on the PC and never lost the signal. The signal dropped to 84% twice but rarely went below 94%--no matter the number of tasks I was doing. I'm very pleased with the product and have already recommended it to a friend.

Incredible! This is exactly what I expect from Mac. Plug it up and forget about it. This is the most reliable and simplistic router I have owned.

A Real Step Up For Me
Written by BC from Brinnon
Dec 7, 2009
I've had a wireless router in the house for about 5 years - a Netgear and it has been adequate. The signal wasn't as strong as I'd have liked at every corner of the house and occasionally there were some issues with the ISPs Modem, Clearwire. When I switched over to my MAC Book Pro from a windows based laptop it just seemed like it was time to upgrade my router as well....and I couldn't be happier......I placed it in the attic out of the way where I couldn't put my Netgear unit because the signal wasn't strong enough. The Airport unit is strong througout the house......
In terms of download speeds.....Where I was getting less than 750Kbps I'm now getting 1.25Mbps downloads and often 2Mbps over the same ISP wireless modem.
Set up was easy - it was literally up and running in less than 5 minutes to include the firmware update.
I also like having the ability to have a "Guest Channel." Occasionally our guests use it but I routinely use it as a separate internet connection for my IPhone without disrupting the channel I use for my laptop.
I like having the additional freqency although as yet I don't have a use for it.
The only disappointment is my effort to use the USB port for a remote 1 Terrabyte BackUP. It's just too slow attempting to back up that much data over a wireless network. A smaller drive with selected documents would work just fine. Apple should upgrade the USB port to perhaps a firewire port.4 of 5 people found this useful

Fantastic little hot router....
Written by MD from Eustis

Actually, the Airport Extreme is a fantastic product. While I have only had it a couple of weeks, flawless. Having measured the speed of my internet connection prior to hooking it up, was exactly the same (25 mbs download and 3 mbs upload) after getting it up and running in a matter of minutes.
My only concern, with nothing to compare it to, is that it feels hot to the touch.3 of 3 people found this useful

A good investment
Written by KD from Woodinville

I had purchased a Belkin N+ wireless router 6 weeks ago and have had problems ever since. Spent a lot of time on the phone, and on hold, with their tech support, and it would work for a few days before it would stop working again. In the end, I believe the Belkin was not compatible with my ISP provider - Comcast. Purchased this router, had my MacBook Pro, a PC upstairs over the garage, and my iphone all connected and working within minutes. I should have known - stuff from Apple just WORKS. I also love how easy it is for someone visiting to be able to connect as a guest so they can use the internet without having access to your home network.

Great buy
Written by SS from Rock Hill

I recently installed the AirPort Extreme in my home office. The signal is 5 x 5 throughout our 2400 sq ft house, upstairs and down. Zero issues thus far. It downloads web pages, videos, and large files without any noticeable lag. My VPN connects without issue. Works well with our two Mac desktops and two Windows laptops. I highly recommend this product.

AIRPORT EXTREME - GREAT PRODUCT
Written by MA from Singapore

This is so far the best product I have ever bought apart from purchasing MacBook Air.
I have been using my BELKIN router which has been my trusted router for 3 years. And have swop to Airport Extreme and configuring without any LAN cable. The AIRPORT UTILITY gives me a smooth transition and now I am using a Linksys modem + Airport EXTREME. Worth the time and money spent.12 of 15 people found this useful

Best Wireless Router Ever!
Written by JH from Highland
Nov 28, 2009
I have recently switched to the AirPort Extreme from a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54GS) and have never had to restart it. I noticed a large speed increase when I switched to the AirPort. The ability to add a network Hard Drive was great and made using Time Machine even easier. I recommend this router to anyone who is looking to purchase a new router. 6 out of 5 (if the ratings went that high)

I had the older Apple Extreme base station snow drop or whatever its called, and that thing kept dropping a connection after 4 years and im assuming that its because it was so old but im not sure. I tried going over to Netgear and after 7 hours of trying to set it up with a repeater and access point and 2 hours of tech support I went back paid more money and had the best experience setting this thing up! GO apple! I highly recommend this product. You get what you pay for right?
