    Ok for me

I got a 27" iMac with this kind of display. The glossy was anoying but just for a week, today I do not tell. I have an 30" apple cinema display by my side and I like better the 27".

I do believe is way too expensive still, again, I have the 27" iMac, not the 27" display alone. I would pay $700 for the 27" display, but not $900, I rather get another 30" if that is the case.

Gloss 27 inch is not good for eye health. Apple please make it matte.

    • Written by from Vancouver

    PROS: looks nice, good colors
CONS: it's glossy - which means you can see yourself in it all the time and all the reflections in the room. That's not good for the eyes at all!

One thing is when you have glossy screen on MacBooks, or IPads, which have smaller screens - it is fine... but 27 inch and gloss?

Apple, please manufacture this 27 inch monitor with matte screen!

    Good Overall

I purchased the Display for my Macbook because I was tired of being crammed with the small area of My 13" Unibody Macbook. I bought this, set it up and loved it. I unfortunately had to purchase a keyboard and a mouse with this, but decided this would be a better investment than purchasing an iMac with a 'display in' capability because I use my laptop for everything.

With all this being said, in my opinion it is overpriced highly, but then again all LED monitors are because they are just becoming on the market. I purchased the refurbished one with around 150.00 dollars saved (so beautiful, do this!).

One thing I don't like is the fact that it has SUCH A SHORT POWER CORD. Why? But I guess that's why they make extension cords, won't be buying that from Apple (Joke, they don't have them but if they did it would be 49.99). Apple is expensive, but I have always paid the price because these really are the best of the best you can buy.

    Thanks for reading!

    Worth the Price

I upgraded from a 20-inch cinema display and all I can say is wow. This thing puts any other display I have seen to shame. For one, the gloss enhances the clarity and hasn't proven to be an issue because it can get so bright that it can overpower any reflection you throw on it. The design is great and the crispness and color is unparalleled by any other comparably priced display I've seen. I will say that you can get this to work with computers that do not support Thunderbolt or Mini Display Port with a converter. I used a dual-link DVI converter and no resolution has been lost. It is important that you use a DUAL link and not single link DVI converter because it won't carry the full 2560x1440 resolution. I don't recommend this for the casual web surfer, it is a luxury for those of us who use computers extensively in design and video. The added resolution provides digital elbow room that allows you to keep many applications running simultaneously without needing to constantly minimize and hide other windows. Despite the price (and I don't make a whole lot of money) I have absolutely no regrets. Period.

    One Word -- Fantastic!!

After a hard work day, this has to be the absolutely best marriage to my 11" Mac Air imaginable. As expected, hook-up is seamless straight away out of the box + all the wires are there. The three-way wire bundle even has extra reinforcement for any friction the cable may encounter if you choose to route it through the hole situated in the back the monitor base! In the usual Apple fashion, the monitor case has a beautiful smooth aluminum brushed finish along the edges and back, (except for the black Apple logo centered in the back which doesn't appear to light up). The front borders of the stunning display have an approx. 1" black border along the both sides and top, and a 1-3/8" border along the bottom. Interestingly as well, there are several evenly spaced magnets inside of this border too?! Six along the top front edge, three on each side front edge, and four on the bottom front edge. I found a paperclip w/6 pages easily holding up... The glossy screen I prefer when working with photos and video, so this is not a problem for me. Also, being able to control the light source and moving it or me to be either behind or at worse angled far enough away to not cause problems. Perhaps the magnets could be used to rig up a hood of some sort for you folks who can't? It seems to me entirely unfair to rate this beautiful monitor low due to physical conditions outside of its control.

    Great Display with short cords

    • Written by from Edmond

Cannot say enough about the capabilities of these displays. But PLEASE make the cord longer. Using these with a MacPro, there is really not enough cord to run it to a system on the floor or mounted underneath a desk.

    Amazing Display.

    • Written by from Burlington

First off, its amazing, and I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the gloss. In my opinion the gloss makes this monitor even more aesthetically pleasing.

It's absolutely perfect for me as a web developer as I want to be able to work on the go, but still want a lot of screen space. Speakers are pretty good, iSight is a plus and the 3 USB ports make this monitor worth it's $1000 price tag! I can now connect my iPhone dock, and external hard drive to the monitor as I only use them at home and not have to worry about disconnecting them every time I take my laptop somewhere.

Buy this monitor, you won't regret it, especially if you want the flexibility of a notebook, and the screen of an iMac.

    Very impressive, nicely executed!

    • Written by from LOS ANGELES

I've had the new display for a week. Before, I had separate speakers and microphone. It's nice to have those built in. Playing DVD's is a real pleasure, the image is a lot crisper than on my old Apple display. I like that the display options are far greater and I can rotate the screen if I need to. The speakers are surprisingly powerful. Face Time is a real pleasure. People are complaining about the glare, I have a MacBook Pro with the same gloss--don't have any problems doing my work on it. If I have to pick on something, it would have to be that I'd like to test it with Blu-Ray. Until then, I'll use the HD option via iTunes. It also generates less heat than my old model. So this gets a very big thumbs up from me to Steve, Jonathan and the design team! THANKS! ☺

Nice toy for some but not a professional display.

Great form factor. Shame about the gloss. Apple has abandoned those who want a pro display for photography editing. If only Eizo could slot their product n an Apple chassis.

No eye strain issues! Learn to zoom

    • Written by from Reisterstown

I have trouble reading the reviews that slam the high pixel count. The true color and bright LED display at 2560 x 1440 is absolutely amazing! Using photoshop or Lightroom has never been so good. The display will dim to the correct light conditions when set it in system preferences. Reading web pages will strain the eyes with small font IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO ZOOM! Safari uses (Command +). You can zoom everything else by setting it in Universal Access. This display will work wonderfully for you if you let it. I for one can't stand looking at whites on an antiglare screen. They look dingy and muted. Not so on this display, which is a must when editing photography and other media.

Superb colors, but the glossy surface and high pixel density kill my eyes

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I see many reviews here with the same issue: the high pixel density and the glossy surface strain my eyes after less than 30 minutes of work. I have had 3 large LCD displays from Apple over the last 10 years, first the beautiful 22" Cinema Display, then the 30" model, and most recently this one. I still use the 30" model (non-glossy), and largely prefer the latter. Apple has made it impractical to read pages in browsers with the standard small lettering that they default with (yes, this can be changed, but not as a default). I work all day with this screen and end up having severe eye strain, to the point that I am seriously thinking of getting another display. It is too bad, because otherwise for color fidelity and resolution, it is a superb screen. I am a photographer and appreciate the accuracy of colors for this screen after the usual calibration.

    Best Monitor ever!

    • Written by from Reisterstown

I had read most of these reviews before purchasing this. It was between this and the Dell U2711. Here's what tipped me over to choose the Apple display. It's an LED monitor and therefore no warmup time (the Dell isn't LED), it uses less power, it hooks up beautifully to my Macbook and frees up the bulky power cord to be stored away and lastly it has a glossy glass screen! Who in their right mind would want anti-glare? Maybe if you use a PC or laptop and work in an office with overhead fluorescents and big sunlit windows. This is by far the best monitor I have ever had. It's bright when it is supposed to be and dim when in less light. I have had zero eye strain issues. Priced relatively the same as the Dell. No brainer, choose this!

    Hello all,

I am a developer and love this monitor. I have my macbook pro over to the left on a stand hooked to this 27" monitor and it gives me plenty of room for all my windows. Very sharp, clear, bright, and the sound is great.

Glossy = Color Depth and Accuracy

    • Written by from Greenville

For those that are disappointed with the glossy display, you must not be familiar with the elements that are involved with design/photography/film work. The glossy display, while annoying if you work with a window that is behind you, is a less intrusive design, as a matte display is literally a layer of extra material between your eyes and what you are working on, creating less accurate tonalities within your art.

For those experiencing eye pain, you are probably not used to the size of the screen and are also most likely sitting too close to the monitor. These are not simply for surfing the internet and are most definitely not for reading large amounts of text documents.

Eye Strain and Headaches. Sending back.

    • Written by from Lake Oswego

I'm so bummed about this display. Its build quality and design is top notch. I love the pixel real estate too!

Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to take it back due to eye-strain/headaches I get when using it. After just 15 minutes I haven horrible eye strain. My eyes feel like I've been staring at the screen for 15 hours when it's only been minutes.

These displays have the ability to get super bright. I've tried turning it way, way down and seeing it it helps but it didn't. There's also an issue where I can perceive a faint flickering of the screen. It's like the flickering you see when looking at florescent bulbs. I almost think this is what is causing my eye strain, not the brightness or glossy screen. Searching the Apple forums turns up posts of other people experiencing a lot of these same issues.

I probably spend 10 hours a day in front of the computer. My old 23" ACD gave me zero eye strain. It looks like I'm going to have to switch back to it and return this 27". It bums me out, but I don't think I'll be able to get used to this. I prefer to stay with Apple products, but I guess I'll have to look elsewhere now.

Another thing I was disappointed in are the built-in speakers. The speakers are on the very bottom of the display so the sound coming out of them shoots straight down. The result is really muffled audio. This was immediately apparent to me when listening to music in iTunes. Messing around with the eq in iTunes can help mitigate the issue, but it's not a great fix since audio outside of iTunes will still be muffled. Unfortunately, OS X currently doesn't provide a way to eq the system audio on a global level which would be a potential workaround for this. I'm not a fan of muffled audio so I switched back to using my laptop speakers which fortunately (or unfortunately) sound better.

The built-in isight camera is cool and the build quality on this is outstanding. Sadly I have to return it though. Just can't get around the eye-strain : (

Super quality monitor; it's a bit bright; may be a bit glossy.

    • Written by from Miami Beach

Colors are bright and the 'light sensor' works perfectly; the only negative thing I've noticed about the monitor, is that it turns too bright in well lit rooms, but it adjusts very well when it starts to get dark in the afternoon, or if it rains and it gets dark all of a sudden. Be sure to position the desk or monitor in a way that the window(s) or other light sources do not reflect directly on the monitor. If there's little that can be done about repositioning the monitor, then at least avoid wearing white or other bright colors while working with this monitor; bright clothing will be seen on the monitor’s screen a lot more than darker clothing. Images are neatly displayed at it’s impressive 2560 x 1440 resolution; most colors are displayed bright and vibrant, as in inviting to look at the monitor even for extended periods of time; all this without the disliked image 'Ghost' effect. There's a lot of space on this 27” screen so, shortcuts and features such as Expose and Screen Zoom options can be awesome tools to use.
About the audio: it's very good; the way it should be. The sound from my HP 23" is very low quality compared with the audio obtained from this monitor. And also, I always questioned the quality of my $450.00 HP 23" monitor; it's squeaky, very low to the desk level; and it’s very glossy; and according to a small survey run with Apple’s 27” monitor, which I'm facing as I type this review, the 23" HP monitor (which is right next to Apple’s monitor) is glossier than Apple's 27" monitor, according to all my friends answers. About the price ($999.00) for this Apple 27" monitor, sounds expensive, but the quality is there; the HP monitor makes noise with minimal touch; the screen and the components surrounding it make squeaky sounds that indicate the monitor is not solid built; Apple’s monitor is built strong, solid and with great quality materials; and like always, the design is super cool; I use mine at home, with the MacBook Pro 15” and an accessory used to keep the MBP standing and therefore takes a fraction of the desk space the MBP would take; this way the MacBook Pro focus all it’s resources on a single monitor and I have a lot of space to work with; I don’t want to even know about the return policy on this item; worth the $999.00.
