    Matte option?!

    • Written by from Arlington

Just not useable for video and photo editing... nice for watching movies and playing games maybe, but awful for work... returned mine after 3 days of frustration.
When will Apple wake up and start making professional displays?!

    Bad backlight bleeding

    • Written by from New Richmond

This monitor has really bad backlight bleeding. My first one had bleed on all 4 corners with the lower right being really bad. Exchange it out and all four corners still have very bad bleed.

Monitor terrific except lack of non-glare option

    • Written by from Manhattan Beach

The monitor is exceptional in all regards except for the lack of an anti-glare option. For an additional $50 Apple offers an anti-glare screen for its MacBook Pro 15" and 17" laptops; those of us who want an anti-glare desktop monitor would pay this much or more if it were available.

    Awesome Display!!

    • Written by from LYNNWOOD

If the glare disappointments you, turn your lights down for crying out loud. There ARE numerous ways around that ya know? This is an awesome display, a lot cheaper that the 30" and much bigger and nicer that the 24". This is even cheaper than other brands with the same resolution. Try getting the level of Apples service behind any other brand and you will be disappointed.

    You will never look back.

    • Written by from OLD TAPPAN

The negative reviews of this fantastic display are simply foolish. I'm rating it 5 stars on the single most important aspect of performance and that's IQ. Black levels and contrast are outstanding. In most darker offices and rooms the glossy surface is no problem at all. The cord is a bit short, yes, but if you choose to keep your MacPro on the floor as I do then buy a MDP extension at monoprice.com for $8 and don't rate the display 2 stars because you don't know where to buy an extension for the MDP or USB. Go for it, you will never look back.

    Worth a G.

Bought it and love it. Most solid and crisp flat panel on the market. Spend the couple hundred bucks you won regret it.

    Fantastic!

    • Written by from Mauldin

    This display is fantastic.

Colors are vivid. No dead/stuck pixels. No color problems. Simply fabulous.

My only gripe is that it is just a touch lower than my 27" iMac. For that, I removed one star because it could have easily been raised a tiny bit to sit flush with the iMac. For me to have to put something under it (to calm my ocd) after spending $999 is disappointing.

What's with all the bad reviews?

    • Written by from NORTH BRUNSWICK

If you bought this display knowing that it was glossy, and there was no matte option, why would you give it a bad review? It's like buying a Prius and complaining that it won't go off-road.

This display does have its issues, nonetheless. It eats CPU cycles! I've been wondering why my MacBook Pro runs hot all the live long day. It turns out, the screen saver has been running in the background, even while the display is sleeping. I couldn't figure out what it was until i turned off the screen saver on a hunch. I fixed it but it's still only a workaround. Mind you, this has NEVER happened with my previous display.

I tried playing with the webcam using photobooth and when the screen turns white as a pseudo "flash", it overexposes. Sup with that, Apple?!

Just today, the speakers on the display decided to stop working. I had to unplug, then plug it back in for the darn thing to reset. Oh yeah, btw, there is NO power button on this display since Mr. Jobs hates buttons, so unpluging/plugging was the only way to reset it.

I'm running the latest firmware update on this display, and until Apple fixes these issues, I can only give it 3 stars. As a display, this thing is AWESOME! It's got a little too much tech in there for things to go wrong though.

    Superb Monitor

    • Written by from New York

I do a lot of writing and photo work and I wanted to upgrade my 24" cinema display. On my macPro 3,1 (early 2008), I upgraded to 10.6.4, installed the Apple Store ATI 5770 (this is plug and play), and attached the 27" LED Display and a second large hi-definition display to the DVI.
Simply, the 27" display is stunning. The glossy screen finish makes colors snap. I work in mildly subdued light and find the display does not cause excessive glare, and this is only a minor concern for images with a black background. I find the image quality far outweighs the reflection concerns. The black bezel creates a nice contrast and enhances the display.
The 16x9 (x160) cinema configuration is great for mirroring to a second high-definition display (for movies) and is ideal for work and writing when you want side-by-side display of multiple documents or programs. I balked on an earlier display upgrade; I did not like the configuration of the 30" display because the height to width ratio is slightly oversize for cinema.
I strongly recommend the 27" cinema display. The cost represents a fair value for the quality and versatility of the product, which includes speakers, camera, microphone, ambient light sensor, etc.
Overall, this is a beautifully engineered display which immerses you in a captivating visual experience.

    Brilliant visual, minor quirk

    • Written by from Norwell

Extremely vibrant, sharp, and easy on the eyes (reading text is relatively comfortable as far as high contrast LCDs go). As noted in other reviews, make sure you are comfortable with the glossy finish - I find it accentuates the colors and makes for a 'crisp' image which I prefer. Backlight bleed through is minimal, evenly distributed, and white, so it's easily ignored.

Built-in speaker sound quality is solid for a monitor, and gives the option of ditching external speakers to reduce workspace clutter. The minimal bezel and overall thinness likewise make the display surprisingly unobtrusive, despite the large diagonal and high resolution (in terms of bulk, my previous 24" gateway monitor is about the same as this monitor).

One factor to be wary of is that it does produce an unexpectedly audible power supply 'buzz' noise at full brightness (projected from the back of the monitor), so I don't recommend using it in very quiet settings if you're sensitive to ambient noise. Given how silent Apple's more recent products have been (MacMini, MacBook Pros [when not heavily loaded], iMacs), the noise stands out.

    Don't believe the lies!

HERE IS THE TRUTH ABOUT THE GLARE!!!
When using the monitor for web surfing or application usage, any black or dark colored images or webpages that appear on the screen will produce a serious glare affect in those darkened areas.
It is only on white or bright colored images/websites that a person will not see any problem with glare!
If you are working in an area or office with windows and overhead lighting you will see some serious glare!
Unfortunately, you have to be in a much dimmed lighted room to avoid seeing a glare in the darken areas of the screen. I don’t know how Apple allowed such an obvious product flaw to get approved for product finalization, but this monitor (in my opinion) lacks professional usage and innovation.
This is the 24” Apple monitor only bigger, no real innovation or improvements from the previous monitors, not worth the $1000.00 price tag.
Now if they knock off a few hundred dollars, then they might have something worth wild.
Be smart shop around, then you will truly see what I mean.

    Beautiful! No problems with glare...

    • Written by from Harvest

I've been on the antiglare bandwagon for a while now, convinced that these glossy displays - beautiful though they are - would be unusable in real world conditions. So when it came time to buy a new monitor for work, I very nearly passed this one up - I a VERY glad that I did not! While I do notice some distracting reflections when working on dark backgrounds (which most of us probably don't do very often - most software leans toward the lighter end of the spectrum), these do not at all affect my day to day work (graphic/web design).

My very light-colored environment is fairly bright, lit by huge windows along one entire wall, and even then, the glare is hardly noticeable or non-existent most of the time - definitely an insignificant detail considering how incredible this monitor looks!

Also, I love that it powers my MacBook Pro (and provides more USB ports) - and it works great in "clamshell" mode. And the auto-dimming feature, which I thought I would never use, is actually quite handy in a situation like mine, where the large wiindows mean that on sunny days, when the light shifts dramatically depending on the movement of the clouds, the monitor adjusts very naturally and intelligently, and I've found that it really helps.

If you need a good monitor for lots of photo editing or movie watching (or other uses that might involve darker images), and if your setup requires that your monitor be facing a window or other bright light source, I could see the glare being a problem, but in my fairly average office conditions (or other situations where you have more control over lighting, etc.), it's a perfect fit.

Make no mistake, any bad review against this monitor is an act of abuse.

    • Written by from College Point

This is a helluva monitor, make no mistake about it. As a long time user of 30" apple lcd and dell U2711, I can definitely say Apple has done a wonderful job for producing this decent monitor. I know peoples are complaining about the glossy screen, but considering its sharp, vivid, and bright picture quality you could easily ignore it. I think this is just in the different league from Dell's counterpart as I'm comparing side by side right now. I would sell the dell on ebay and order another apple tomorrow. I guaranty you, SEE FOR YOURSELF.

    Great Monitor

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Just got this yesterday. Its replacing my 30 inch Dell. Despite what people say about glare problems, I have to say that its not really that much of an issue. The reflections are definitely visible in the glossy surface, but they are well balanced by the screen's brightness. That is one thing that is omitted in most reviews - this display has a really bright and uniform back light. With Dell's display, I would have to close all the window curtains to be able to see it well, otherwise the image looked pretty washed out and it would start to strain my vision in about an hour. This unit - no problem.

Far superior to anything in this price range.

    Missed Again

    • Written by from Signal Hill

So I bought a new system and along with the Mac Pro a 27" monitor. Seems as if Apple has turned into a even bigger money grabbing w----re, let me explain. You see they made the chord on this monitor only 3 feet and realistically you must have the monitor right next door to the display in order for the chord to reach. What a horrible mistake unless of course you purchase a additional extension cable. What a piece of work.. can you imagine having to buy additional gear to get this to function. I wanted to send it all back. Honestly I have never been more disappointed. The monitor is nice except the glare can get to you after a few minutes. It is brighter than the 30" but not as sharp. I would caution anyone to at least have a look at it at the store before plunging to purchase this item.

    Way Better Than I Expected

    • Written by from Oakville

I agonized about getting this display, because I had read so many conflicting reviews about the glossy screen. I convinced my boss to go for it and we just got it - and it's amazing!! I'm sitting a very well lit room and there are no problems with the screen. I can see that if you do a a lot of dark hue'd or desaturated graphic work how this might get annoying, but we work on DSLR video's and so far pretty sweet.

    27" iMac

    • Written by from Houston

I bought the new 27" iMac with i5 processor. This is the finest display I have come across. Please do not convert it to anti-glare. The main reason I bought this computer is the beautiful display. Glass is best.

Some people don't like the reflective properties and have trouble due to lighting but I am not one of them.

If Apple decides to offer a anti-glare screen I really hope they continue to offer the current one as an option as well. OSX Snow Leopard runs great, I really like it after using Windows 7 too. I run Windows 7 apps on the OSX desktop using Parallels with Coherence. It really is the best of both worlds.

Too much gloss -- needed to return.

    • Written by from Scottsdale

I tried to like this one, I mean I did put in time and effort to go to the store knowing that it had a glossy screen. Set it up and just could not handle the distracting glare. Even in an all dark room, I needed to put a light on in order to read documentation while using the screen at the same time; the reflection from having the light on was remarkably distracting as well. Kept for a week and forced myself to ignore the glare...eventually returned it.

After a little more time on the market, I am hopeful and optimistic Apple will be coming out with a matte option just like they did for the Macbook Pros. Until then, I will use my old Dell as a stop-gap.
