    Great visual display, but fragile.

I have enjoyed my display for just over a year now. I have a home office and have all equipment connected to a power surge protecter. As a rule, everyhting is shut down at night. Two nights ago, we had a lightening storm that shut the power out for about 30 seconds, when the power came back on, all appliances were normal.
The next morning, the display was dead. So, all the coputers, printers and older monitors were fine, the display however waas not. I followed all the rules to protect equipment, but now I know that is monitor needs to be either unplugged if storms are in the area.
    Expensive replacement.

Gloss again? Help a doctor out!

Apple! Honestly, you must start listening to us. Once again I must go to the Dell Ultrasharps because your glossy screens create too much glare. I am a radiologist and this is truly the only thing preventing me from buying one. You must at least offer a matte screen option in the future if you hope to ever reach the market of photographers and medical professionals.

I am a pro wedding photographer and don't really see anything wrong with the glossy screen. I work in ambient light with the windows of the room facing the back of the screen and at night I work with lights off so I don't see any reflections. Great display however where the heck is the power button?! I render and or run actions with Photoshop and Lightroom and would like to walk away with the screen off while they are running.

    Wonderful monitor but...

This is a wonderful monitor! The glare talk exaggerated... Very colorful and bright. Blacks are really dark. Resolution great. Per pixel definition very good. Cord is 3ft long. So what? Go for an extension. Sound is tuned for human speak frequencies. Very clear. Aesthetics superb. But... after 3 months of (occasional) use the screen went dead. It started flickering, taking too much time to show up at boot, then total, irremediable death. Strange that I could still see the image displayed, but very dim and faint.
Either backlight failure or logic board, they tell me. Now waiting 20 days for repair.

    Great Monitor

This monitor is top notch. It has all the convenience and esthetics one would expect from an apple product. The resolution is hard to beat plus it has a camera and speakers built in. This is at my desk at work and it makes it easy to plug my Macbook in while working then take my Macbook home and continue working there.
The glare is not that bad, although I'm not a designer.

Gloss screen looks purdy but works dirty.

    • Written by from Toronto

For watching movies in the dark, this screen is the cat's pyjamas.

For working in normal room lighting, it offers enough reflections the I can watch squirrels playing in my backyard by looking at the computer.

It's a classic case of form over function. It looks purdy. It works dirty.

For those wondering why pros hate glossy screens, the answer is that ambient (room) light coming off the screen makes colour accuracy a non-starter. People saying the contrary simply don't know what they're talking about. To make these screens color accurate, you have to work in the dark - which is completely impractical for most people.

Gloss also causes eye strain for people working in rooms with bright natural light.

    Unusable due to cable length

I purchased this display to compliment my MacPro tower, which is used for professional purpose. I was surprised to discover that the connector cable is built-in and of unusually short length. So short that it would not even come close to reaching the computer even though the display was quite normally positioned very close by. Because of its use in a professional studio, it was just not possible for me to position it any closer. I learned that Apple makes a Mini DVI port extension cable, but that they are not going to be available for at least a couple of months!! As such, I had no choice but to return this product. Apple's huge success in the consumer market has gradually led it to turn their backs on the professionals. This is another blatant example. I've become an increasingly disappointed customer!

This display is top of the line for external displays. Many of the reviews here complain of the glossy screen, however I am coming from an 20" iMac and do not feel the glossines is an issue. I use it with my MacBook Air and it's absolutely stunning.

My only complaint would be the lack of an ethernet port, only three USB ports, and the price due to a Thunderbolt display being available so this is technically older technology at the same price as the new.

best display in the market, bad customer service

comparing the 27" Cinema Display to other alternatives, it's a great bang for the buck. awesome colors, contrast etc, minus the fiddling one has to do with other displays. BUT my display started showing vertical lines just one month out of warranty and Apple doesn't do anything about it - replacement of the LED panel costs $700 for an obvious manufacturing issue.

do yourself a favor and purchase this item with AppleCare - I sure have learned my lesson

FIVE stars for the display, ONE star for customer service

Does NOT work well with older displayport mac mini

I have not much issue hooking up with my 2011 MBA, but recently had the display hookup to the 2010 mac mini which has the displayport. The entire system is un-stable and crash at least 3 times a day, picture freeze up and backgroud audio from the monitor speaker buzz like crazy. I have many Apple products and I am starting to question the interoperability between devices.

Nice display if you're a consumer

This display is very deceptive. It's beautiful if you're a consumer. If you're a designer/photog/film/illustrator, this display is useless. Gloss/reflections really gets in the way. Color consistency is good, but colors are over-saturated. Color-accurate work is impossible. For professionals, this display is like a candy apple...looks shiny and delicious, but it's not good for you. Apple seems to care less about pros these days, with some of the decisions and products they're making.

Not height adjustable kills this- Appled failed on this design

There is really no excuse that this monitor is not height adjustable!

If Apple realizes that a lot of professionals may want to use this monitor they should also realize that these professional's workstations have the monitor on a higher shelf thsn the typing surface and would want to have the monitor be lower than the standard position.

    Apple failed on this design.

    LOVE this Display!

I have waited a few months after purchasing this display to be sure it wasn't just a matter of being in love with it because it is gorgeous and typically Apple looking. It suits my environment well. I'm using it with a 2009 MBP 17", and have done dual displays, though with the real estate on this display, I find it's easier to just run in clam shell with the MBP sitting in a cradle. I was a little frustrated that the Thunder Bolt display would not work with my MBP, and shelling out the same dollars for what is arguably an older design without the latest features, but I honestly have no need for Thunder Bolt at this time anyway, and when it comes time to need it, I'll likely need a new display anyway. There is some reflectivity from the gloss panel, but I rarely notice it, and I'm in a bright room near a window. Once you are accustomed to the gloss you will hardly notice it, and the picture is gorgeous. You will not be disappointed.

I read now and again all the pros and cons as well as to see if other who bought it are 'thunder bolted" as i am . I think the display is one of the best money can buy. With mini server and windows in parallel it works great for me. I only had to add extra Ram to increase the speed of my mini. I would say a very good product for your moneys worth.

    Best Display I've ever owned

    • Written by from Hawthorne

This is easily the best display I've ever owned. I read all the reviews and horror stories about the glare, but decided to buy it anyways and I'm glad I did!! The monitor resides in a well lit room with a window directly behind the monitor. As long as sun isn't directly shining onto my face, the glare isn't noticeable at all. After reading reviews here and elsewhere I thought it would be horrible, but it's really not bad at all, low enough to be a non-issue.

This is a fantastic monitor, bright, detailed, crisp with fantastic color. I will definitely be picking up a second one of these for my desk. Best computer purchase I've made in a long time.

    Mini Port vs. Thunderbolt

Ok you are gunna get drilled on this. I purchased the Thunderbolt display but apparently the slot that looks exactly like the thunderbolt port is a mini port on 2009 macs or later. THERE IS NO WAY FOR THE AVERAGE CONSUMER TO KNOW THIS UNTIL YOU PLUG IT IN AND SEE THAT IT DOESN'T WORK! What the heck!!!!

    BIG PRICE NO CABLE

    • Written by from Burbank

53 of 61 people found this useful

I had to replace my old Apple display which was great. Today I purchased a new Apple display from the local Apple Store. My old one died. The new one is nice except the cable is like 3 or 4 FEET LONG!!! If you computer isn't sitting at your feet and your monitor is sitting on your desk, THE CABLE WILL NOT REACH! It's a thousand dollar monitor! Apple, Come on!!! You guys think of EVERYTHING! So now I have to buy a $30 extender cable. That would be OK, except NO ONE ON THE GROUND HAS ONE...IN LA! So, now I have a nice new display that I cannot use until I order one online. Holy moly that is frustrating. Why the heck would you make the display cable so short when they were always long enough in the past. If you just wanted to make another $30 for each monitor, then HAVE THEM IN STOCK!!!

    awesome display

You can buy a display labeled as 1080p for 400-900 bucks from besst buy but none for this money will be able to give you a 2560 x 1440 display .

the 1080p on a 27 inch non apple display( samsung syncmaster 27 inch 550 series for example , that i returned on the day i got this) is so subpar that your eyes will screaam with pain after working on something bright like microsoft word. i almost made an appt with an optometrist to check to see if i had issues with my eyes!

    now for the CONs:
there are none for this one but i have a beeef with the TB display that the TB display is not backwards compatible with mini display ports!!! what a game by apple and thats why i have taken 1 star out. its not that apple cant figure it out that they can make TB displays compatible with older mdp port macs, its just that they dont want to.
