    come on apple

take into consideration that i use apple computers and products, and have been for 20 years. i'm an apple fan. well, they are losing me these days. anyhow, i've got many ipods, an iphone 3G, 3GS, and iphone 4, airport extremes, etc. i also replace my macbook pro every year with a new one, i have used many 22", 23", 24", and 30" apple cinema displays for many years, and i did replace my mac pro every year with a new one until apple got off the beaten path with this new one, singling out the professional community with the lack of high-end workstation graphics card options, blu-ray support, and lack of high-speed data connectivity, and a lot more, and of course the premium price that i can't justify anymore without more innovation on the part of apple.

i excitedly bought one of these 27" cinema displays last week at the apple store before any reviews came, and had to return it the same day cause the USB ports did not work...i got a dud..fine, no big deal. i would have bought two of them, but they only had one. anyhow, i did use the display for about 6 hours straight, and it gave me a splitting headache, literally gave me a migraine, and i know it was the display. i'm not sure what about this display induced my bad headache, but i know the display did it. my 30" cinema displays, iMac, and macbook pros do not give me a headache after prolonged use.

i didn't like the glossy screen at all. i didn't like the limited connectivity and measly one year warranty. i didn't like the 16:9 aspect ratio, and i didn't like that i could not adjust the display height up or down, and i didn't like the distracting thick black glossy bezel around the edge, and i did not like the fact that the speakers were pointed down. most of all, i didn't like that i bought a defective unit.

in my opinion, apple has completely lost its way with displays, keeping the cost up, and offering less. for professional use, i'd look somewhere else, like an NEC monitor. the 27" cinema display is sharp and bright, but exaggerates colors and has a slow response time. i can't tell you how disappointed i was with this display. i use to own two 30" apple cinema displays, and they were awesome, over-priced as usual, but awesome. why does apple only offer one display size, and one aspect ratio? and why not offer a matte display option? and why not make it colorRGB LED backlit, and/or offer a higher quality CCFL backlit option that will offer a wider color gamut?

a lot of you average consumers will like this display, cause apple has brainwashed you or because you don't need anything for critical work, but for the professional, you better think twice before you spend your money on this display. there are many other displays out there around $1000 at this size that have better specs, and are better for pro color-critical purposes, NEC and Dell pro monitors being of this group.

i can only hope that someone at apple realizes what they have done ;-)

Will only work with older Mac Pro if you upgrade the graphics card to something like the Radeon 5770 -- this was the only way I could use this monitor with my 2007 era Mac Pro 2,1

    Wonderful Video recurring Audio Failure

I love this screen, the display is stunning. Audio has been an issue, Sometimes when the computer (2010 Mac Pro 3.33 GHz 6 Core 6 GB 1333 MHz DDR3) wakes from sleep the audio fails to work, no sound. The only fix I have found for this thus far is to shutdown unplug the screen and plug it back in. Doing that seems to reset the audio. I have only had this occur a few times, If you are using external speakers Buy this screen and love it, If you happen to get one without audio issues you'll be sure to love the crisp sound it produces.

I am a pro wedding photographer and don't really see anything wrong with the glossy screen. I work in ambient light with the windows of the room facing the back of the screen and at night I work with lights off so I don't see any reflections. Great display however where the heck is the power button?! I render and or run actions with Photoshop and Lightroom and would like to walk away with the screen off while they are running.

I read now and again all the pros and cons as well as to see if other who bought it are 'thunder bolted" as i am . I think the display is one of the best money can buy. With mini server and windows in parallel it works great for me. I only had to add extra Ram to increase the speed of my mini. I would say a very good product for your moneys worth.

    Unfortunately Glossy

I can forgive the glossy displays on the portable products where you can easily relocate yourself, tilt the screen, or block the reflection. It's a terrible hassle though when it's your main display in a semi-permanent location. Having a display this glossy seems so counter to how a display should be designed and causes an almost daily headache for me.

    Excellent Display

This display is top of the line for external displays. Many of the reviews here complain of the glossy screen, however I am coming from an 20" iMac and do not feel the glossines is an issue. I use it with my MacBook Air and it's absolutely stunning.

My only complaint would be the lack of an ethernet port, only three USB ports, and the price due to a Thunderbolt display being available so this is technically older technology at the same price as the new.

Beauty Meets Function = Great Quality!

I upgraded from a Windows laptop connected to an external HP 24" display to a late 2010 MacBook Air with an Apple 27" Cinema Display. The MacBook Air and 27" Cinema Display make a beautiful, elegant, practical, and fast pair. The Apple 27" Cinema Display is more expensive than other monitors on the market, however, it is of superlative quality. This monitor itself is gorgeous and the image quality is stunning! My eyes are ecstatic! Some reviewers have lamented about the monitor's reflective glass, however that didn't bother me. Overall this is a great monitor that I highly recommend. If you like high quality products, you will not be disappointed.

    Designers delight

As a graphics professional in imaging and video processing I'd rather have a slightly dim office and control placement of the lighting in my office to eliminate any glare issues. The "flat" finishes that are non-glare are at the expense of fine detail. Any surface that scatters light to reduce the glare, well, scatters light. If you _must_ have a "non-glare" surface because of your particular environment and you must compromise, then there are antiglare films you can apply to the monitors glass. Or buy a spare glass from Apple parts and get it treated. But if you want the utmost in fidelity then move the lights in your office or put up drapes.

    Enough with the anti-glossy nonsense...

The do-or-die remarks constantly pouring in from people who claim how unusable this display is for "designers" at large is misleading. Many designers are fine with and prefer this finish. The gloss has made the color range wider, blacks darker, and the details sharper. Not sure why you'd give up the better display quality for a blurry matte finish just because your light bulbs point in the wrong direction, because those matte displays give you a visual which is of much lower quality than this one in my opinion.

$800 repair just out of warranty

I purchased this display only to have the LED quit working just after it went out of warranty. I have purchased $200 monitors that lasted for years and years. I believe that a $1,000 monitor should last for more than three years. By the way, I really liked the monitor while it worked.

    Beautiful useless display

The display is beautiful - if your a troglodyte living in an underground cave with zero light.

This is not a professional display.

The glare renders it useless if you have any ambient or indirect light source in the room.

    It's pretty much a $1000 mirror.

Not height adjustable kills this- Appled failed on this design

There is really no excuse that this monitor is not height adjustable!

If Apple realizes that a lot of professionals may want to use this monitor they should also realize that these professional's workstations have the monitor on a higher shelf thsn the typing surface and would want to have the monitor be lower than the standard position.

    Apple failed on this design.

A picky pro photographer and videographer give thumbs up

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

40 of 44 people found this useful

When I read some of the negative reviews of this monitor I find it hard to believe we're talking about the same product. I have been a professional photographer and videographer for more than 30 years and I have found this monitor to be one of the best I have ever used, including some that cost considerably more.

The main complaint seems to focus on the glossy monitor face. It's interesting that some of the so-called "pros" here admitted that they do their critical editing at their kitchen table or in a brightly lit office. This is nutsI. Everyone I know whose livelihood depends on critically accurate, repeatable color has a work room with subdued lighting. In fact, that's a requirement for most monitor calibrators. The glossy surface presents a saturated, sharp image that is beautiful to behold with no reflection problem whatsoever in a room with subdued lighting.

I employ a total color-managed workflow from camera to printing press, and this was one of the easiest monitors to professionally calibrate. It was not overly saturated or too bright (as many other monitors are) and the difference between before and after calibration was slight

What about more casual users in brighter rooms? Here I think the room configuration and personal taste will be most important. When I'm not doing critical work and open the windows shades that are to the immediate right of the monitor, the reflections don't bother me even though I'm now fairly brightly lit. When I open the shades behind me I can see the window reflection, but, it's no worse that my beloved iPad. Usually tilting the monitor (practical because of the great viewing angle) solves the problem. But, obviously, some can tune out reflections better than others.

My only complaint: the short 4' cords. I understand why Apple made the cords short (to eliminate desktop clutter for MacBook users) but they should have included an extension for the many MacPro users like me who find it about 2 feet too short.

This monitor isn't for everybody, but, for me it's been the perfect balance of quality, usability, and price.

Cannot say enough about the capabilities of these displays. But PLEASE make the cord longer. Using these with a MacPro, there is really not enough cord to run it to a system on the floor or mounted underneath a desk.

    Yellow Tinge Anyone?

Bought this display the other day and it is truly mind blowing. The colours are vibrant, the audio is rich and full sounding and the iSight works great. BUT(obviously) after a view days use I'm noticing a slight discolouration towards the bottom of the screen, yellow tinged. It is negligible but I mean paying a grand for a monitor you'd expect it to be pristine..just my two cents.

We are a structural biology lab who have been with Apple from day one. Out hardware guy got smart and bought up several 30" monitors before they disappeared. I had seen the Apple glossy flat panels down the hall, and realized they are unusable for doing critical grey scale work in a lighted lab. We also upgrade the 17" MacBook Pros that everyone uses as soon the higher speed models emerge. Please, please Apple continue to offer the flat screens for the 17" MBP in the new upgrades next year! And consider offering a flat screen option at the high end of monitor line to connect with our MBPs, and please your old friends! tr...

It's the best monitor for your MacBook Pro, and the new line of laptops has great Graphic Cards so I can play my games with a awesome resolution. The only thing that I would like it to have is a HDMI input!! I mean I know that my laptop could serve as almost anything dvd or youtube etc, but what about blue-ray!!! Or playing PS3 or something else!!!
