Best PC monitor I have ever owned.

I absolutely love my Apple LED Cinema Display 27". Don't believe these myths that the ACD27" works only on Macs, or that you need a Mac to control brightness controls from 0 to 100%. I have a PC with an eVGA GeForce GTX 260. The ACD27" is connected to my GTX 260 with the Atlona AT-DP400. There is no lag or image degradation from the Atlona.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with Boot Camp 3.1 installed, along with Apple's 27" Display Update. The speakers, microphone, iSight camera, ambient light sensor, USB ports, and brightness controls work flawlessly. Driver level 1:1 pixel mapping even works through my nVidia card. With a pixel pitch of .233, text is razor sharp. Images look vivid and really pop with the glossy finish! The glossy panel could be a problem if you want to use this in a bright environment, but with proper lighting conditions glare is a non-issue. This is hands down the best PC monitor I have ever used. It has a much cleaner image than any other LG IPS display on the market, all of which have an aggressive anti-glare coating which creates a "sparkle" effect. Thank you, Steve Jobs, for bringing a glossy solution to IPS buyers!

Exactly what i was looking for!

I know a lot of people want to complain about the fact that it only works with Mini Display ports and the glossy screen is very reflective, but the bottom line is they say the monitor has a glossy screen so if you do not like that then do not buy it. Do not buy the glossy screen then bash the product because you do not like that because you knew very well what it was! The Mini Display Port is a somewhat annoying problem but i bought a nvidia GT 120 i believe and it has DVI and Mini Display so i was fine. It once again clearly says to you works with every NEW Mac not every 1 Year old Mac or every 2 Year old Mac so stop acting like they are tricking you because they give you all of the information right here and expect you to actually read it.

The quality of the monitor is unbelievable its dark blacks are great and even at full brightness it looks fantastic. At night with my lamp on i turn off the backlight because it doesn't even need it. The clarity is also just perfect and the speakers surprised me. I normally use Bose computer speakers and so i am used to great sound so i thought trying the built in ones would disappoint but they do not. They still sound great and are very usable as well as the Isight camera it is very good quality and its all built in to the monitor so you cant lose. I also enjoy that there is no buttons on the monitor because then you just turn off the computer and it is off as well and same thing for when it goes to sleep.

I recommend this monitor without question and the money is not that big of an issue when you know you are getting quality like this.

Disappointing due to sound problems & poor technical support

I really like the screen size but have had to return my new 27 cinema display back to Apple due to sound problems. Intermittently, when trying to watch hulu or play music on iTunes I could not get any sound out of the cinema display. After talking to Apple Support the only way to solve this was to plug/unplug the display power which resets the controller, so clearly there is some hardware/software problem. Since I didn't want to have to keep plugging/unplugging the display power to get sound and Apple Support couldn't fix the problem, I have sent my display back. My experience with Apple Support was so poor trying to deal with this problem that I will not buy another Apple Cinema Display again.

    Fabulous with new 27" iMac!!

I connected the 27" Cinema display to a 2 week old 27" iMac. Fantastic combo! The 27" cinema display looks identical to the 27" iMacs screen. Both have the same glossy finish. The form factor of the monitor is slightly shorter than the iMac by 1-1/4" but the screen dimensions and resolution are identical. I created a simple spacer to elevate the display to align the top of the monitor with the top of the iMac.

I don't understand all of the complaints about the glossy finish. I own several Dell 24" flat screen displays that have the non-reflective finish and I can tell you that this new 27" cinema display is considerably sharper and clearer compared to the Dell 24" WFP displays and I have no issue with reflection.

Setting this up with the 27" iMac couldn't be easier. The iMac automatically detected the new display, dialed in the max resolution at the first boot up. I simply had to choose which side logically I wanted the display to be on in system settings. It also gives you the cool option of deciding which monitor the menu bar/dock is located. You don't need to buy a separate cable as it comes with an all-in-one cable for mini-display port, USB, mag power connector for MacBooks.

Overall I highly recommend the new 27" display...you won't be disappointed!

IT DOES NOT WORK WITH EVERY NEW MAC

it depends what you define as a 'new' mac. my macpro is 'only' 1 year old but this screen will not connect with it. i have just received and i am now sending it back having had my time wasted. you can buy DVI to mini adaptors for around £130 but how ridiculous to have to. unless you buy a brand new macpro, you can only connect this monitor to laptops,

Got two defective units, had to return the the last one

    • Written by from San Francisco

The first one had a small dust at the middle of the screen behind the glossy screen.

    I exchanged it,

The second one had dead pixel(s) just at the middle of the screen.

I returned it, because, after 15 days I cannot return it anymore and then I assumed they would have giving me a harder time to exchange it.

The good news is that the support was pretty good, you just need to watch-out for the 15 days cutoff date.

I looked at the Dell UltraSharpTM U3011, but it seems that it does not work with the latest MacBook pro (at least with mini-displayport/displayport connector, not sure about the dual-dvi-port connector).

I might give another try at the Apple 27''. It is a very nice screen if it did not have these little defects.

(and yes, Glossy can be annoying depending of your lightning, so, make sure to have any strong light source behind you).

loving this new monitor!!! Just received last night and very impressed...blows away all the others I 've looked at in this price point! i have a brand new 15" fully loaded macbook pro courtesy of apple care because my 2008 had a minor glitch when I opened the lid of flickering. They couldn't seem to fix it after 3 attempts and sent me a brand new model which I upped to 8gb ram. I thought I would treat myself to this monitor, wired keyboard, and magic mouse, and "bam" I now have the best of both worlds! This led was made to work together and I am very impressed. As far as all the complaints regarding glare and glossy, go back to 1990 you can keep your matte screens. After all you can't please everyone. I do agree Apple should increase cable lengths as well as add some other port compatibility but other than that you get what you pay for and thats quality. i though about saving a couple of hundred on the 24" but I am glad I didn't, much better quality with the 2560x 1440. If you can afford this is the way to go! Thanks APPLE!!!

    Great Display

This display is extremely clear and vivid. The only time I notice the glossy screen is when my computer is asleep and the screen is black. Once it wakes, the glossiness becomes a non issue. I could just be used to the glossy screen of my kids iMac though. I agree the cords could be longer, but I was able to adjust my computer location to make it work. I really like the space with which the 27" screen gives me to arrange my work. If you are not used to a glossy screen, this may take just a little for some people to get used to. But, I think this monitor is fantastic and well worth the investment.

    BAD APPLE!

    Talk about a ROTTEN APPLE!
You need to be in near complete darkness, in order to avoid seeing a glare or background reflection in monitor. The monitor is nice and heavy it seems more stable than the 27" IMac, but there still are no height adjustments. The worst feature seems to be the lack of USB ports and short cables; it would also help if they would position the USB ports at different places on the monitor. I would like to see HDMI ports and media card readers on the next series of Apple monitors. This monitor has only the apple logo and aluminum casing going for it, other than that: it is lesser in value to similar monitors on the market.
Apple should give up on making monitors and just sell monitor casings with the apple logo on it; it would be cheaper for them and the consumer.
No real bargain with this monitor!
(Unless you like charging up you Apple laptop using your monitor?!)

I'm a pro photographer and having this screen is great asset.
Yes, there is a problem with reflection, but with any screen you should good lighting condition. The colors are really nice and my photos looks great and sharp. It's really nice to have only one cable on my table that also charging my MacBook Pro.
I returned my new Dell U2711 27' HD UltraSharp 2 month age just because it was hard to see if the image is sharp or not.
Apple display is one more great product that you mast to have for photography business.

    Good but...

I am very pleased with the monitor itself. I purchased it for editing digital photographs and it is superbly vibrant, the nuances of subtle colors are clearly displayed. I have not experienced the glare problem reported by others, but I have also made sure the lighting in my work area is not positioned to reflect off of the screen.

BEWARE, though, if you have an oder Macbook/Macbook Pro. I have a mid-2008 Macbook Pro with DVI port. The well-intentioned Apple sales rep guided me to the overpriced Gefen "DVI-to-Mini Display Port" converter that does not work with the Apple 27" LED monitor. It worked with the 24" monitor, but not the newer one. Apple online sales and technical support apparently did not know this, and I found out directly from Gefen. Gefen is planning to come out with a compatible product around November 2010 but don't have one now. On my own, I found the Atlona DP-400 DVI-Mini converter and it works fine, it makes my older Macbook Pro compatible with the monitor. The Atlona does not feel as well-built as the Gefen, and it is more expensive, but it works.

I give Apple 4 stars for the monitor because it is so vibrant, otherwise they would get no more than 3 stars for the hassle I went through. I give online sales and tech support 3 stars at best because they had no idea about the Gefen compatibility issues, and I give Apple 2 stars this one time because they made my 2-year-old Macbook Pro almost obsolete with respect to this monitor. I can understand obsoleting items 36 months or older, but not 24 months. And I had to solve my own technical problem, the Apple tech support engineers tried but I found the solution on my own.

So just be aware that you have to do some jerry-rigging if you have an older Macbook. Maybe Apple online support will have a better solution in the future.

The Glare is from Your Room

I love the glossy screen and much prefer it over the matte screen it is replacing (a 30" LG). My Macbook Pro from two years ago came with the matte screen and it was not nearly as crisp or vibrant as the new Macbook Pro or the iMac with the glossy screen. I guess if you live in a world of unfiltered fluorescents you should look elsewhere, but in my very bright, south facing office it has never been an issue.

I read these reviews and laugh. Adjust the light in your room! This is my second monitor from Apple. The 24 was a great monitor also but the 27 is, well, better. To the critics:

    1. It was NEVER meant to work with your PC. Grow up. Stop trying to get your 299.00 Walmart PC to work with a superior product.
    2. The glossy screen brings colors to life, like no other monitor on the market.
    3. LED technology is the only way to light a monitor. Totally true to life images.
    4. It just works, always. Isn't that nice for a change?
    5. Built in speakers are better than before and sound great.
    6. It was NEVER meant to work with your PC. Yeah I know I said that before but I really like that one. With so much junk on the market why would you criticize a product that actually does what it claims.

The only reason this display does not get 5 stars from me is due to the price. I am cheap, and I think Apple could have put this on the market for about $200.00 less, but I still bought one because the screen is GLOSSY, and I like it that way. Glossy is good.

Great job Apple now lower the darn price.

I want to love it, but only like it

This is a good monitor. The colors are amazing provided the light source is controlled. The glossy screen requires a low light situation, or the glare is distracting. Apple should also include a matte option for users in higher light situations. The cords while functional, are much too short. I suspect most people not using a notebook will need an extension cable. I mounted mine on the wall and the first monitor had a defective stand that couldn't be removed. The second monitor after exchange worked fine for mounting on my office wall. The monitor is very sturdy feeling and visually was without defects. The iSight camera works well and the speakers are of reasonable quality for a monitor. My only other complaint is that Apple does not offer a PC standalone driver for brightness except through bootcamp. When not using my macbook pro, I hook it to my pc with an ATI 5970. While it works, the only way to control the brightness properly is to first adjust the brightness on my macbook pro. The monitor then remembers the setting on the pc. I cannot recommend this monitor for PC only users with no macs to hook it to given the lack of drivers for brightness control. (NOTE: Installing bootcamp on a pure non-Apple Windows PC does not properly control brightness in my experience.)

Unfortunately I am very disappointed. Bought this wonderful piece of future technology at the Apple store next to us, chatting with the sales rep about my nice iMac and after back home I realized, that 27" monitor and iMac didn't fit.
I just checked the web page again. It still recommends this monitor for the iMac and now word about it MUST BE the new iMac.

So I will spend my money somewhere else now

Returning Due to Terrible Reflections From Glossy Screen

In reading the low ratings of this unit it brings to mind something that I have always thought about buying high dollar computer hardware. "DO YOUR HOMEWORK". This monitor is amazing, although it is set up to work with a fairly narrow product line.

If you have mini DP, and need the resolution it's flat out the best monitor you can buy.

If you don't like glossy displays, or have many light sources in your work area, this might not be the display for you (or you might want to look into the matte overlays available - just google it)

Personally, I like the contrast that comes with the glossy Apple displays. The color rendition if amazing, and I have had no problem using the glossy Apple displays for professional photographic color work.

Try it before you buy it, but as far as I am concerned, this is the best display out there for the money (provided you have the hardware to drive it)

    Glare Glossy

    • Written by from Bushkill

39 of 56 people found this useful

I have to agree with the comments about the Glare on these Apple Cinema Displays. I know it produces higher contrast, but the reflective nature of this choice is too high of a price to pay. Apple should offer an option for those of us who don't want to work in a dark room in order to use these with out distracting glare for 10+ hours a day.

Apple offer an option as these are Pro Display purchased by professionals who have other options on the market from other major Display brands
