    Head Hurts

The glossy screen can look pretty at first, but when you begin to work on it for hours, it begins to take a toll. My head constantly hurts, never had that before. My eyes become more easily fatigued. The people aren't lying, it's basically a mirror.

They say skinny is prettier, and Apple like a good anorexic has been trying it's best to thin down, in the name of vanity. The gloss move is in the name of vanity, ultimately.

I think they forget though: Dead will always be skinnier. Just a thought.

    Needs Anti-Glare

I am an animator in the ad / commercial industry. I have two of these in a dual configuration. The colors are vibrant and consistent, the contrast is beautiful, but the glare is unmanageable. Whenever a composition contains blacks or dark colors, I am met with the reflection of either my face or whatever is happening behind me. As excited as I would be to purchase one of these for personal use, paired with my anti-glare macbook pro, I will have to refrain until an anti-glare model is available.

I needed a lot of screen landscape to do what I do. I compared prices and looked at several different options. Everything I looked at in the same class as the 27" Cinema Display was both uglier and more money. Apple being prettier ain't new, but cheaper... I could get used to that.

Do a little research, make sure it's got the ports and the plugs to hook up with your rig and then buy it.

    The "professionals" have no clothes.

Ignore the so called "professionals" that complain about a glass screen. These are the same people who had to be dragged kicking and screaming from CRTs to LCD screens. And guess what CRTs were made of: Glass.

A matte finish adds a texture to a display that dulls colors and makes images less sharp. It's like frosting a window. Plain glass allows you to see the actual image. It's perfect for color correction. Does it reflect? Not much since the backlight is so strong. Matte screens turn completely grey when hit by direct light, which is worse than a reflection.

And, besides, if you are doing important, professional color correction you're not doing it outdoors or in a room full of powerful lights and windows. Close the shades.

    Needs a matte option.

Perfect in almost all other areas, but the lack of a matte option makes it virtually unusable for visual designers. It becomes nothing more than a nice mirror.

    Best Monitor I've Ever Owned

    • Written by from Washington

I've owned many monitors over the years, including 3 high-end color calibrated monitors (just recycled a 20" CRT LaCie). This Apple monitor is far and away the best I've ever used. The clarity is super sharp and the color is spot on. Additionally, I love that it turns itself on/off.

Everyone seems to complain about the glare. As a designer I've always worked in low lit rooms and I've always customized hoods and blinders for any lights anyway, so I don't personally have any glare problems. If I were working with my back to a window -- that could be an annoyance.

    The Dumbing Down Of Apple

    • Written by from Franklin

Apple has left the professional behind. Yay, an iSight camera! Who cares! What about the professional video editor trying to color correct on this over-colored glossy monitor? If you like iMovie and making stuff for YouTube, this is the monitor for you. If you've dropped 1,400 bucks on Final Cut and do real editing, look elsewhere. I am such a huge Apple fan and have spent so much money on their products that this just sickens me. Why not still offer the old one (30 inch cinema) for professionals and offer this kiddy monitor for kids making flip cam skateboard iMovies? It saddens me. I guess I'll go with the Dell monitor instead and try to pawn this off on eBay or something.

Display needs a matte option, limited usability without

    • Written by from Brooklyn

This is a high quality screen with great picture quality, good contrast, brightness and color balance. However, all of that becomes irrelevant in most work places, as the reflections will distract and make it impossible to do any kind of critical graphics work.
To overpower the reflections, the screen has to be viewed at high brightness settings settings, causing fatigue and headaches.

Still, in some environments, such as bright office spaces with uncovered windows and sun light, it may be impossible to use the screen without third party glare reducing screen covers. This is is not acceptable for a high end workstation display, and will generally not give as good a result as if the screen itself had the correct finish. Therefore, I cannot recommend this product.

    Headaches and Tiredness

    • Written by from Brighton

132 of 145 people found this useful

This display is lovely to look at and fine to watch movies on, but if you want to work on it you would be far better off looking for a professional display.

I have been using this for a while now and I've noticed my productivity go down due to the headaches and fatigue that are caused by the reflections on the glossy display. I am constantly having to get up and move around to let my eyes recover from the constant strain of trying to focus on my work rather than the reflections.

I am now looking to buy a professional display that is designed to be used in a working environment.

I just received the monitor and I am very happy with it. I know there is a discussion between a glossy or a matt version. I fortunately work in a rather dark environment so the glare problem is a non-issue for me. I work a lot with Photoshop and the colors look vibrant and sharp! You have to calibrate the display for accurate colors which it does very well. The display is beautiful build, but has too few USB ports.
For me the glossy finish gives a lot more depth than a matt version...

STOP ALL THE COMPLAINING, THIS DISPLAY IS AWESOME W/ THE GLOSS

    • Written by from FLORENCE

I just received my apple cinema display and I love it, its absolutely amazing with the glossy finish, i understand peoples issues with the mirror image of the glossy finish but that is relatively easily fixed by purchasing a 3M or similar anti glare cover for the monitor screen, there it is problem solved. The monitor is an upgrade from the previous matte series, images and videos are crystal clear, bright and absolutely a pleasure to view on this display,

I will say though I do agree with some of the review that with the cost of the monitor, it should not be too much of a stretch for Apple to have a matte version to choose from....

    REALLY needs anti-glare version

I just bought one and hooked it up. It's stunningly beautiful, and although I could use double the number of USB ports on the back, overall it's got everything I need (more video inputs would be nice).

However, I only give it three stars because the glossy screen has far too much glare. I'm going to have to spend a small fortune (in addition to what I already spent on the display) to re-do the lighting in my office. Blah.

    Great technicals....very poor functionality.

Like most Apple products, the design component and technicals of the display are excellent. However, the glare off the monitor is really quite intense. True, one could pay nearly 1000 dollars for the monitor, resolving to specially situate lighting, or use it only at certain times of the day, or buy a self-applied matte finish to reduce the impact of the glare. But what is wrong with that picture? Why should anyone have to do those things to achieve the intended functionality of a 1000 dollar monitor? And what is that functionality? Quite simply, it is to VIEW it WITHOUT the visual distraction of GLARE. Kudos to Apple for building a technically superior monitor. But it is quite incredible and perplexing that Apple has chosen to ignore the obvious problem of glare in a product whose sole purpose is to be viewed. This is sort of mind boggling. Come on Apple, use some common sense and offer a matte option for the Cinema Display. I am sure you will have plenty of takers, who would gladly pay for that option. Personally, I would buy a Mac Pro and new Cinema Display in a heartbeat if I did not have to deal with glare.

The cinema displays you produced two years ago are much easier on the eyes for designers. You seem to have forgotten the positive attributes and gone for the glitz.
I bought two of your non-glare monitors before they were discontinued. They run perfecto, great color balance. Great resolution.

I could see how the shiny screen could have a ton of reflections under the right lighting behind the user, but my office isn't that bright and the monitor looks GLORIOUS. Sorry, but that's the only word that will accurately describe good this thing looks paired to my 13" MBP.

    LOVE IT!!

    Screen flickering

I love this display so much, with all its bells and whistles, but there is one annoying problem, the backlighting.

For some reason, the display screen would flicker in low-brightness settings. (Google it)

It isn't a big deal to me, but I just thought that others should know before buying. Also, the intermitting audio problem has been fixed with an update.

    Stunningly Beautiful

I have never understood why "graphical designers" work in bright artificial lighted areas.
Nothing hinders visual color clarity and judgement more than artificial light, or any light for that matter.
The only light I want to see when hacking away at my graphical work is that of the display. Which is why I work in low light areas, or no lights at all.
For me, this display is beyond words. It is truly an amazing spectacle to admire upon my desktop.
I am considering moving my desk to another room where my working area would be in the center of the room. That way, I can walk around the desk and see this display from every angle. Yes, it is THAT beautiful.

Beauty Meets Function = Great Quality!

I upgraded from a Windows laptop connected to an external HP 24" display to a late 2010 MacBook Air with an Apple 27" Cinema Display. The MacBook Air and 27" Cinema Display make a beautiful, elegant, practical, and fast pair. The Apple 27" Cinema Display is more expensive than other monitors on the market, however, it is of superlative quality. This monitor itself is gorgeous and the image quality is stunning! My eyes are ecstatic! Some reviewers have lamented about the monitor's reflective glass, however that didn't bother me. Overall this is a great monitor that I highly recommend. If you like high quality products, you will not be disappointed.
