    Great idea, poor execution

I've always been a gaming mouse user, so I'm most familiar with SteelSeries and Logitech mice. But for my Mac, I wanted an untethered mouse. I was intrigued by the Magic Mouse's innovation and potential, so I picked one up. After 6 weeks of heavy use, I've decided to swap it out for a new Logitech wireless with Darkfield. My main issue with the Magic Mouse is with its ergonomics...it doesn't have any.

But, before I go into describing the problematic issues, I'll list the positives of this mouse. Bluetooth connectivity, weight (significance), aesthetics, innovation, and construction.

The breakdown of issues is as follows:

***) Since the mouse is so flat, the hand and fingers easily fatigue because resting your finger tips on the surface can and will affect the functionality. So, you're forced to place them differently than you would on a traditional mouse.

***) With no significant arch (hump) in the design, your palm provides no stability/base for gesturing. Your thumb, ring, and pinky (in my case) are pulling double duty in providing movement and support for gesturing. This ultimately impacts the ability to gesture effectively. Two finger gesturing for web surfing becomes cumbersome, with the mouse either being tossed around the desk, fingers fatiguing, or having to resort to 2 hands. In the end, I've resorted to using the keyboard for easier navigation and functionality. A more traditionally arched shape would cure a lot of this, and it wouldn't necessarily compromise the gestural pane of the mouse.

***) This issue has nothing to do with ergonomics, but with the laser tracking. It's fussy and inconsistent. My desk is 2 tiered with a black top and a large white keyboard tray. The Magic mouse would work perfectly for a day on the keyboard tray and then inexplicably stop tracking with any effectiveness, jumping around or just hanging. I would have to move it to the black desktop for it to work properly again...and even that didn't work at times. Turning the device off and on doesn't help either. It would decide on its own to work properly again. I've tried a friends Magic Mouse on my desk and it exhibited the same funkiness. Not acceptable.

***) Lastly, the mouse feet. Two long thin rails are not sufficient for this purpose, whether or not the material is slick. It just doesn't play nicely on any surface. Try sliding a pair skis around a wooden surface or tiled floor and tell me how effective and smooth that is. A poor design decision.

Hopefully Apple will put more usability research into the design of their next mouse. Being different and innovative doesn't always work out for the user, and I'm surprised Apple hasn't put more thought into the usability of the this device, especially since they tout being the the forerunner in this space for personal computing. Like the title says, great idea...poor execution. Two stars for innovation and aesthetics alone. Otherwise, it would have been 1 for functionality.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for Apples next mouse...they'll get it right sooner or later.

caution: it does magic on its own

This mouse is great if you are NOT doing any design or film-making work. If you do, be extra careful with your fingers because it can easily "misread" your movements and go on its own through layers and levels, spoiling your work.

I personally prefer the mighty mouse. I miss having the ability to go between windows by pressing its side buttons (a functionality that the magic mouse doesn't have).

It is a cool device but it doesn't have as many features as older models

It looks great but if you are doing graphic design and/or DTP, I wouldn't recommend because the mouse has magic touch and it will keep moving the canvas.
It really frustrate me and it ended up HURTING my entire wrist which I had no problem with Wireless Mighty Mouse.
Also, it feels so HEAVY when you click.

so I went back to Wireless Mighty Mouse.

I use it because it came with my Mac HD and thats the only reason. I keep thinking I'll start liking it better as time goes by but that isn't the case.

    Awful tracking

This mouse looks great but is overpriced and tracks horribly! It doesn't recognize fine movement very well at all which has become quite frustrating. Furthermore, the two button feature has begun to malfunction after about a month. It only recognizes that I have clicked on something about 75% of the time. So I've found myself shaking the mouse to get it to track better and making multiple clicks much more often than I would like. I would recommend staying with the corded version of this mouse.

I found the Magic Mouse to be of limited use. It's a great mouse for web surfing, but difficult to use in any other application. It's absolutely horrible at gaming. Third party apps like Magic Perfs greatly extend the features of the mouse. But features do not equate to utility. The touch surface is hard to use while holding the mouse. Multi-touch is a nice feature, but it causes more problems than it's worth. Ergonomically, the mouse isn't very good either. It's too flat and doesn't slide very well. I see this device as a great gizmo, but it's not too useful.

I love the look and feel of the mouse. My only problem is that the cover for the batteries will not stay on and is very annoying. I have given up on it and now use it without the cover.

The sides of the mouse. Ick.

I just bought this mouse. I really like the multi-touch surface, but this is really uncomfortable to use. Perhaps I have large hands and the mouse is average sized, but every other mouse I have ever used has been the right size. I also do not like the fact that the sides of the mouse are not rounded. The sides are sharp. It is not comfortable to use at all. I have gone back to my mighty mouse. If Apple decided to make the mouse larger, and round the edges of the mouse, then it would be fine.

    Beware of fingertip pain

    • Written by

It works very well, even if it is slightly too sensitive with unintentional horizontal scrolling.
However, I feel strange itchiness pain on my third fingertip which touches the mouse. Does nobody feel that??

wonderful for scrolling, but overy sensitive & difficult to right-click

I really like the touch surface for scrolling and page flipping.

However I find the mouse generates many spurious events when first grasped, or even if it is just brushed on the side.

In most applications this does nothing more than cause some spurious scrolling, but in many X11 applications (one of the primary applications I use constantly), these events can cause far more annoying effects.

It's a little narrow for my big hand and much mousing can give me a cramp in my thumb.

I also find mine a bit difficult to easily right-click with, and sadly it's only effectively a two-button mouse too. I really need a three-button mouse for serious use, but I am definitely stuck on the smooth touch scrolling.

It also chews through batteries like crazy. I seem to be putting in fresh new top-end batteries every two weeks. I'll definitely have to switch to rechargeable . Meanwhile my wireless keyboard is still on its first set and claiming they are still almost fully charged.

If it were a three-button mouse, much more ergonomically fitted to my hand, slightly less sensitive to accidental touches, and if it were as easy on batteries as the wireless keyboard then it would be excellent. I give it two stars only for the touch scrolling, otherwise I would give it zero.

I went from using a corded Apple Mighty Mouse to using the Magic Mouse, and I'm seriously considering returning the Magic Mouse and just using my regular old Mighty Mouse.

First off, the difference in weight is very noticeable, the Mighty weighing in at 77g (2.7oz), and the Magic at 105g, fully one ounce heavier. This may not sound like much, but it's about a 37% increase in weight, which is very noticeable when you're not used to heavier mice. (This isn’t exactly a fair comparison, though, as the difference is not nearly as pronounced when going from one wireless mouse to another. Batteries can add a considerable amount of weight.)

Second is the lack of buttons. While the Magic has the touch features, they don't make up for losing the ability to click the scroll wheel, and the 4th (side) buttons are completely absent. I'm very used to using my scroll button for a contextual menu button in many applications, and having it go away seriously hamstrings my productivity.

Third, the touch surface of the mouse itself is far too smooth and glossy, causing my fingers to grip rather than slide across the surface. This results in undue strain on the hand from trying to hold the mouse steady while swiping two fingers across, compounded by the fact that I cannot press down to hold the mouse steadier, because the entire top surface is a button and will click under light pressure.

The only reason I gave this device two stars instead of one is because it just looks ridiculously awesome, and the gesture-based actions work fantastically well with Apple’s iLife suite.

Beyond iLife, though, I only wish that overall it functioned as well as it looks.

I have used this mouse (or rather tried to), and I must say that there is a huge flaw with the design of the mouse. The flaw is that this mouse is too flat with nothing for the hand to hold on to, forcing you to place your palm flat over the mouse, or cause a cramp if otherwise. I do not feel comfortable resting my entire hand flat on the mouse because it feels awkward and there is not enough control. This mouse should be made meatier so the user can grab on to it and hold it comfortably in the hand. This one flaw makes this mouse unusable. I recommend that you physically try this mouse and see how you like the feel of it.

    Love/hate relationship

I love the wheelless scrolling. It brings the mouse experience closer to that of the new trackpads. But the scroll area of the mouse is large and very sensitive, and the mouse scrolls wildly out of control because of this. Turning off the "Momentum" setting remedies this to some degree, but also negates a potentially cool and helpful behavior, because when Momentum is on and you give the scroll area a hefty flick, it can scroll a long distance. When Momentum is off, it can take 4 or 5 repeated scroll motions to scroll the same distance. Also, the ergonomics hurt my hand, with a sort of carpal tunnel like sensation. I had thought this would go away after a few days, after I had retrained my muscles, but it has not. Also, you grip the mouse by its metal base, and I suspect I must have some skin sensitivity to the metal. No rash, but just skin irritation. Sorry to whine. I wanted to love this thing, Maybe in its next incarnation it will get my vote.

Poor battery life as a main problem

It's sleek as only an Apple product can be, but it comes with two major letdowns:

    1) The battery life is rather poor: 1-2 months with branded alkaline batteries

    2) The scroll-sensitive are is very large and you can't change it in settings. This means a lot of accidental scrolling that can be quite annoying

    Apple Magic Mouse

The Apple Magic mouse does have great features but has one major draw back. It is not terribly ergonomic. I really should have gotten my money back. Now it is sitting collecting dust. Too bad they did not build these features into the shape of the mighty mouse. It took using the mouse for a while before I noticed the ergonomic problem. When I used it for extended periods even after 10-15 minutes I start feeling major discomfort. My daughter and girlfriend experienced the same thing with the mouse so we stopped using it. I just with there were ergonomic mice that are Apple compatible with programmable buttons. Maybe it is time for Apple to reinvent ergonomics.

I am always interested in design but form without function doesn't do it for me. I'm finding that while Apple designs the best notebooks (13 Macbook Pro Unibody is my latest), Microsoft designs the best mice!

    Who would have thought.
