    Functional, but terribly-designed

    • Written by from Redwood City

Don't use this mouse if you care at all about your hands. It's the least ergonomic mouse I've ever owned, and I wish I hadn't bought it.

My hand starts to hurt after using it for more than maybe an hour (and yes, that's with breaks for typing, stretching, etc.). If you want to hold the mouse comfortably, you'd better have TINY hands -- anyone with average-size or large hands will have to curl their fingers into an unnatural claw-like grip to hold it securely, and your hand will tire quickly. Clicking is even worse -- you almost have to curl your finger back on itself.

Scrolling is a bit better -- you don't have to exert any force like you do with clicking. But you still have to keep your fingers in an awkward, claw-like position, which makes it hard to hold the mouse itself steady while scrolling.

Finally, there's the fact that it's wireless -- there are always batteries to change, and for that, you get a range of ... 6 feet? So if you're thinking of using this mouse to control a media-center computer or similar, don't bother. Bluetooth just doesn't have the range.

About the best that can be said of this mouse is that it's functional -- I've never had any problems scrolling, clicking, or moving the pointer. But the serious ergonomic issues make it difficult to control, and therefore rather imprecise.

    Very Disappointed

I'm not sure what the thought process was behind putting basic double AA batteries in the "Magic Mouse," but it was a horrible decision. Yes, the feeling and swipe functions are great. However, it runs out of power every 1-2 weeks. It magically eats money and time even with rechargeable batteries.

Compared to the design and smooth process of the rest Apples products, it just seems clunky. One idea is just to make a mouse-pad that charges it or a little station you place it on at the end of the day. My Braun toothbrush even has this down.

    Not very pleased

    • Written by from Somerset

I love the horizontal scrolling feature of the mac mice. I decided to go with the wireless this time, since my first non-wireless mouse only lasted a year after the chord started to rip. Well this one is super sensitive and drives me nuts. As a designer, it is always moving my art boards around when I don't want it to, changing web pages with the forward and backward side swiping feature.. it is WAY TOO SENSITIVE. But the biggest disappointment of all is with that this mouse DRAINS THE BATTERIES. I had to change my batteries after only having this mouse for ONE MONTH. Then again after ANOTHER MONTH—not to mention I do shut it off. I will have to purchase rechargeable batteries, but I have had a logitech mouse for an entire year and left it on all the time and NEVER had to change the batteries. Apple makes great computers, but once again disappointed with yet another poorly made accessory from them.

I don't get the bad reviews

I love using this mouse when I need something other than the trackpad on my laptop. It goes with me to use on digital exams when I have to click quickly and precisely, but otherwise it usually lives on my desktop for when I use the laptop in clamshell mode. The multitouch gestures are very convenient and reliable. My only complaint is the tracking speed is somewhat slow out of the box, but that was pretty easily corrected by just upping the sensitivity.

    Buyer Beware.

    • Written by from East York

The Magic Mouse has been a bit of a disappointment to me. I bought it to replace an aging Pro Mouse which was still performing it’s single function admirably and without fail. Only when my girlfriend picked up Magic Mouse did I fall for it’s design and versatility. When it’s working, it’s a joy to use. I can even get a month or two out of daily office use on one set of batteries. However too often it looses it’s connection. Often it reconnects after a few minutes on it’s own, but more often I’ve got to track pad my way over to the Bluetooth icon and pair it manually. On a number of occasions I’ve had to delete it’s Bluetooth record completely and re-pair as if the mouse were new. Finally, on one occasion the Magic Mouse remained un-discoverable by Yosemite for two days despite a battery change an multiple power cycles. (Both computer and mouse).

My bottom line is that I truly enjoy the Magic mouse as a beautifully designed and versatile tool, but I live in fear of reliability issues. Especially during presentations and after battery changes. 2/5 from me. It’s pretty, but it’s made me look unprepared enough that it now stays behind while my MBP and I attend meetings.

I got this for Christmas a couple years ago and still use it all the time! It's very functional as a student and easy to bring with me on-the-go. The battery lasts surprisingly long. I definitely recommend this product.

Works great, but drains loads of battery

    • Written by from Harderwijk

The functioning of the Magic Mouse is great. It perfectly fits all needs and provides the best mouse alternative to the Magic Trackpad. However, never in my life have I had a product, especially a mouse, that drains battery as fast as this one. I understand that a more capable product requires more energy, but I'm well under way to having to replace the batteries every 3-4 weeks at a normal use. Back in the darker Windows-ages of my life, I had a mouse that could easily work for 4-5 months straight. That's really not what I expect from Apple products.

So much functionality falls short of a usable experience

    • Written by from Lebanon

Today I finally threw my Magic Mouse in the garbage. I feel silly for using it for so long. This mouse was amazing to use, not just tracking but swiping between webpages and sizing. But after a year I gave up on it's bluetooth connectivity. It worked just fine about 90% of the time, but would occasionally something would go wrong in the connection and it would become all but unusable. Connecting/disconnecting constantly, the movement would be jittery and you could land the cursor on your target, and all the swiping magic would just come to a screeching halt. I'm giving this a mouse 2 stars because I did love the controls, but the fact is that it's completely unusable.

Love it, when it is working

    • Written by from Monticello rd

This mouse is great, I love the side scrolling and how easy it is to use. BUT it is very difficult to pair with my laptop. A lot of the time it does not even turn on-I have wasted so much time playing around with this thing to try to get the little green light to come on to even try to pair it with my laptop. It is wasting more of my time than helping my productivity. I love apple products but this one is very frustrating.

    Best Mouse Ever

    • Written by from Briarcliff Manor

A sleek and aesthetically-pleasing mouse that is exactly what I would expect from Apple. It combines everything about a trackpad with a mouse, with a myriad of Multi-Touch gestures that would be and are impossible with a conventional mouse. It connects easily to my MacBook via Bluetooth.

My only complaint is that it will sometimes drop the signal, but these instances are rare.

    owwwwww my mouse hurts!!!!

    • Written by from Winter Haven

My new mouse works wonderfully.... was way happy with it until..... owwwwww!!!!! The sharp sides of this design are sooooooo uncomfortable - after just a few days of use I could no longer use it as I now had a tender right ring finger knuckle spot owwwwww! It was so nice using this mouse - as it, like my other sensitive touch apple products was wonderfully sensitive with each other, except not sensitive with me.... not sensitive to my fingers... so I have unfortunately retired it and have gone back to my smooth sided logitech... so disappointed - The mouse design department needs to rethink the sharp edges and make it sensitive for humans as well as sensitive to the computer. HA!

Waste of Money - High priced Apple garbage

    • Written by from San Antonio

This is the worse mouse I have ever owned. The battery compartment is not small enough for batteries, so they can dislodge and the mouse randomly disconnects itself, then you have to turn it over and push them in. It even does this when you have a piece of notecard in their pushing them upward. It disconnects probably every few minutes. For how much money I spent on this, I expect Apple to have actually tested it and realized their design was flawed. If it actually worked it would be nice, but it is horribly annoying and wastes so much time in that you have to fiddle with it every few minutes to get it to reconnect because of the battery problem.

    Don't waste your money!

    • Written by from Durham

I am so frustrated with this mouse! I can't believe I paid so much money for this and now I have to go back to using my old, cheap Logitech mouse, which has stood me well for over four years now. As a grad student, I am constantly writing papers, and as a geek I play Minecraft in my (very little) free time. This brand new mouse is constantly disconnecting itself from my brand new Mac for no apparent reason! What is the point of a mouse that you can't use fifty percent of the time?? I liked the scroll function at first, until I found that, like other reviews said, you have to be super careful because it's so sensitive sometimes that it will flip you back and forth horizontally between pages. I can't even use this mouse to play Minecraft because you can't leave your hand sitting on the mouse or it will respond to the tiniest pressure and start going crazy, scrolling the screens around. And to make matters worse, when it's not being super-sensitive, it is just the opposite: sluggish, jerky, and non-responsive! I have to move the whole mouse and my hand a solid eight inches to get the pointer to move across the screen. I have tried for three months now with this mouse and I'm finally giving up and throwing it out. What a waste of money.

    Still awesome after 5 years

    • Written by from San Jose

Bought the first magic mouse when it first came out, for an older macbook. Now using it on a new Retina MacBook Pro. it works fantastically. I use most of the scrolling gestures on the back of the mouse every day. These make it the most innovative mouse design you'll ever find. I also use the right and left click.

    Highly recommended.

    I absolutely love this mouse.

    • Written by from Portland

I love my Magic Mouse. I love the swiping capabilities. I wasn't even sure I'd use gestures when I ordered it, but I find myself just doing them now. It brings my Mac a bit closer in functionality to my iPad. I wasn't sure I would use my new Mac as much as my iPad. I thought I'd just use it for photo/video editing and as a media server. I find I enjoy using it much more then the pc it replaced. The Magic Mouse is a big part of that. It just makes using my Mac easy.

There was an itty bitty learning curve to using this mouse, for me at least. But it was fast. I was a bit frustrated when first trying to use it, but I immediately started getting it. Then it became completely natural.

Super Annoying Mouse that repeatedly disconnects

    • Written by from South Orange

I have used this mouse for some time and have not had time to figure out what it wrong with it, but after reading other reviews, now know that it is the mouse. Please Apple do something about this. This little mouse is way too costly to disconnect like this.

    Works as advertised, but..

    • Written by from Chula Vista

The mouse works as advertised. The multi-touch gestures are great on a mouse. The problem is the actual size and shape of the mouse. My previous wireless mouse was raised to fit perfectly in the palm of your hand as you hold the mouse. The Apple Magic Mouse is very low and can start to feel uncomfortable after a while because of its almost-flat design. Yes it looks innovative and futuristic, but I suggest you check it out at the store to see if the size is right for you.
