New Mouse for a non-new iMac

Just replaced my original wireless mouse with a new Magic mouse. The old mouse's scroll ball decided to be a one-way ball. So, bought a new Magic mouse at our local Apple Store, brought it home, turned it on, turn the iMac on and in less than a minute it's sync'ed up and working great. I've been in the IT field since it started and I have to say the this is the slickest little mouse ever!

    Apple's best mouse. Ever.

I've been using the Magic Mouse for a couple of days now, and I can honestly say it's their best mouse ever. I'll be the first to say the Mighty Mouse was junk. This isn't. It fixes the most obvious flaw of the Mighty Mouse- the scroll wheel that got clogged with dirt and quite working doesn't exist on the Magic Mouse, because that physical part has been replaced by multi-touch.

Scrolling is a bit odd at first, because moving your fingers up and down polycarbonate is something that's a little new. But once you get used to it, you'll find you can scroll in all directions just as well as you always could. And adopting the iPhone "momentum" scrolling is a really neat idea.

I personally have no comfort issues with this mouse, but I can certainly see how some could. Overall, it's a little pricey at $69, but it's a nice mouse and should work well for years to come.

This is the best mouse on EARTH! The multi-touch is fantastic as well as the fact that the thing lacks the scroll ball that would need cleaning every other second.

    Best Mouse ever!

First off, it is expensive, too expensive. I bought it open item from best buy for $49.
It is smooth, multi-feature/gesture is great. It is sleek and sexy, only if it was the flat aluminum that Apple uses on the Mac Pro so it matches more. Never going to use another mouse. I thought it was going to be hard to get used to, but its is not, 10 min and feels like I have used it before. It fits my hand, but barely (I have really large hands, So big I have never been able to buy gloves) but still fits very ergonomically.

    Wish it had been Wired

It's certainly sleek, durable, and convenient with it's magic moves but the battery drains all too quick.

As a senior in college, I use my iMac (thus Magic Mouse, too) every day. Word docs, Excel reports, etc.
    - Unless you turn off your Magic Mouse (and wireless keyboard) every time you're away, you'll go through 4 AA batteries every month.
    - It makes you wish there was a Magic (wired) Mouse.
    - Or you could buy a charging station for it.

Look on those .Org selling sites and you'll notice customers want to get rid of theirs since it came with their iMac, (like me).

    Only good for iPad users

Unless one wishes to use the iMac like an iPad, this mouse is quite a disappointment. Inadvertent slight lateral movements of the finger result in the page one is working on being swiped to the right out of sight; then, when one learns how to get the page back into view, he finds that all the work he has done on the page has disappeared. One learns that the lateral swipe losses can be prevented by going to the mouse icon under System Preferences and disabling the lateral swipe function. Then he is left with a page that is rather loosely contained within a box that's a little bit larger than the page itself within which the page wiggles and jiggles and bounces around so that it is rather difficult to do things like put a dot in a circle that's on the page because the page moves erratically in response to slight inadvertent movements of fingers on the mouse shell. I am now trying to find a replacement mouse as my original mouse (the Mighty Mouse) lost ability to scroll up and down pages. I got the Magic Mouse because it is the only mouse now available that is made by Apple, which means I must go through a process of finding a Logitech mouse that works satisfactorily ― more about that under Logitech options.

New to Apple, just got an iMac and Magic Mouse came with (so did wireless keyboard, but that's another story). Previously used PCs at work, this computer is at home and so far just for casual use. This mouse is very low-profile, and it does take some getting used to the feel of it. I've been working with it now for about two weeks, and I agree with those who say a higher profile might be more comfortable...I think if I was using it 8-10 hours a day, there would be some wrist issues due to the lack of curvature to the hand. I love that the entire surface is 'active,' and the scrolling features are marvelous.

Now, don't get mad, folks, but I have to say that you need to do a little reading before you attack the product for lack of versatility. We can put some of the blame on Apple for not emphasizing the customizability of the product, but come on, it's NEW, you need to do your research to figure out how the features differ from what you were using before.

The majority of complaints and low ratings on the product seem to have to do with the fact that there is no multi-button functionality. Several even complain about the lack of the right-click function. Folks, you can use it out of the box and it will have just basic functionality, but you can use system preferences to enable the right-click function (as well as others), and you can even download apps to further customize the thing!

Anyway, I love the thing, and I suspect I will love it more as I play with the different possibilities and apps. Down one star for ergonomics, as noted above.

I got to say, i've been waiting to get the magic mouse for a while ever since i got my mac and i got to say, not only is the design beautiful but it also works very well. the multi touch gestures are amazing! Just takes a while to get used to it after using my trackpad for so long, but for me, this is a well made product.

At first, I was thinking if should I buy this. i am a poor highschool student who has a macbook pro.my trackpad is kinda difficult to use coz we do a lots of "click and drag" coz of our presentations. then i give it a shot (thinking that i could return this to the store and give my money back) but when i tried it, IT IS SO COMFORTABLE AND USEFUL!! i mean,i never feel any regrets for purchasing this.totally worth of money.even i used my money as my monthly allowance, its totally worth it.i can use it for a very long time, unless apple will release a new mouse that is way more better than this.but you cant ask for more for using this. APPLE never disappoint me.

The design of this mouse is fantastic and excellently does away with the mechanical ball of the original mighty mouse. However, it is missing gestures for Expose and/or Spaces, and a middle-click function! These seem like large oversights on Apple's part.

    Irritating to say the least

    • Written by from Champaign

Often times, it loses connection connection as often as 1-2 times per minute. Then I have to wait 30 seconds until it connects again. I have to put fresh batteries in it about every 3 weeks or the frequency of disconnects increases. This is totally unacceptable to me, especially when you consider windows all seem to be void of arrows to scroll at the side and bottom of open windows now.
The cost of batteries for a year is enough to put me in a nasty mood. There's no excuse for this.
I'm shopping now, to see if there is an acceptable replacement.

    Awesome Mouse, Waste of batteries

    • Written by from Columbia

70 of 83 people found this useful

The magic mouse is quite wonderful when the battery is not dead. This would be the best mouse on the market if I didn't have to buy batteries (that are bad for the environment) over and over again, or purchase separate rechargeable batteries and charger.

The battery life is ~1 month when used 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (I also turned off the mouse every evening). This is not very good for a professional product. Thats 24 batteries used per year. Think of that per magic mouse user, that is a lot of batteries that Apple could have prevented from going to the land fill (yes, I recycle batteries, but how many people actually do).

Why Apple did not just install a rechargeable battery with an optional cord (with a mini USB cord similar to PS3 controller plug) is beyond me. Probably because it would disrupt their aesthetic.

For all of Apple's great integration and keeping everything simple and Apple, this is a major fail.

Fix the mouse Apple, even if it cost $20 more per mouse, thats $20 in batteries I do not have to buy.

The shortfalls of form over function

    • Written by from Rockford

71 of 85 people found this useful

My initial reaction to the new Magic Mouse was one of pure gadget lust. The overall concept and purity of form are near the pinnacle of industrial design. After spending two full days with mouse in hand, I have become aware of the shortfalls of form over function.

The loss of two programmable buttons (side pinch buttons and scroll ball) have disrupted my work flow and my use of Spaces, Expose and Widgets. The slim profile and the crisp upper edge had forced me to change the fundamental way I hold the mouse (between thumb and ring finger to a thumb/middle finger grasp). After the first day, the cuticle area of my ring finger was sore from the crisp edge. The other consequence of the thumb/middle finger grip is that the two-finger swipe motion requires a repositioning of my hand each time I want to use it. It also puts my clicking finger at the far edge of the top surface. I find that my clicking finger is making more frequent and unnatural lateral movements that are causing considerable discomfort. For someone with smaller hands, this may not be an issue.
The touch surface scrolling seems like a great concept, there is an inefficiency of movement involved. On a Mighty Mouse, scrolling requires a movement of only 1/4", while the same movement on the Magic Mouse requires a 1-1.5" movement with less accuracy. Repeat this 500 times a day, like most graphics professional do, and you see how this is working against you.

So, while the Magic Mouse get high marks for design, the functionality is really a downgrade for me, because I get really concerned when I leave work and my hand aches because of my mouse.

My old Mighty Mouse will not get retired to a box in the cupboard just yet. In fact, I just purchased another because, for me, they work perfectly.

    Not good

    • Written by from Winter Park

The momentum scroll function jumps and sometimes goes off in random directions even when not trying to scroll, sometimes going incredibly far (like ending a 2 hour long movie instantly, clearly that velocity is a math error)

YOU CANNOT CHOOSE TO SCROLL ONLY WITH TWO FINGERS, this proves to be TERRIBLE when using the mouse often. You can only turn scrolling on or off, and it interprets any movement from the center as scrolling even with one finger. Even with momentum turned off, it still scrolls too fast and jumpy.

Keep working on this one Apple. I'm looking forward to some firmware updates to make this 70 dollar hunk of plastic worth it.

Bought it and I like it. Because of the bad reviews here I hesitated for a little over 6 months before actually buying it. The first few times I used it, it took me a while to get comfortable with the new gestures, somewhat different from my macbook's trackpad's. for the people complaining about it being too small for people with larger hands, I'm 6 feet with larger than average hands and not once has it feel to me like it was too small. I mean, for very large human specimens it could be too small, but that's just a fraction of the population. so most likely it won't be too small for you. It is calibrated perfectly out of the box, I never swiped a page by accident like others seem to keep saying and my mouse never got disconnected. I do not regret my purchase at all.

Well functionalities are superb. But the mouse is so flat and it is very difficult to get use to it, if you are going to use it for a long hour, your ring finger will start to ache. and the edges are too sharp so After a long hour of use your whole hand will start to ache.

I love the size of this mouse. It feels great when using it, and it's so precise. With hardly any effort in its use. After going through so many different mice, I can't believe it took me this long to try the Apple Magic Mouse.

I am a fan of Apple, have a Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPhone and many other cool things Apple offers. I have purchased 3 mice for our company and was VERY VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED with it. It is heavy. You CAN'T feel it in your palm, tracking is not optimal. All in all, if you are a professional who does graphic design or video design and animation, this mouse would be the worst choice.
How could Apple drop the ball like this?
I would not even give it one star.
Without exagerration, this is the worst mouse i used since 1999 or so. And we will definately return them.

    Not a great mouse

This mouse is really sleek and modern looking. The problem is that it is extremely uncomfortable to use. It is WAY too flat, and too narrow. The gestures are extremely different than the trackpad, and you cant have two fingers on the mouse when you do anything. You have to have only one finger touching the surface for a right click, for scrolling, etc. Not happy in the least.
