Great mouse for light use, but an ergonomic nightmare

Pros: incredible scroll action, beautiful design, Bluetooth connection

Cons: physically painful to use, Bluetooth occasionally loses connection

After a week of using this mouse heavily for 7+ hours each day, I experienced significant pain/swelling in my wrist and twitching in my fingers. I am 25. It was a little scary.

My hands are large, which meant I had to strain to hold the mouse’s narrow body. Because of the mouse’s low profile and sensitive touchpad, I couldn’t rest my hand on the mouse. I also found the weight of my hand caused accidental clicks because the click button is large and sensitive.

The finger-swipe thing is a good idea, but it makes the mouse slide back and forth. I found it easier just to click to navigate.

Ultimately it was a frustrating and painful tool to work with, despite its sleek appearance. I switched to an ugly Logitech mouse and no longer have to sleep in a wrist brace (one of the mouse’s hidden costs for me).

    good idea poorly executed

the laser does not work well on some surfaces and it does not fit well in the hand.
The touch pad is a good concept and I like the philosophy of minimal moving parts but the wheel is still a much more useful feature.

Fun concept, but not so fun to work with

I was super-excited to use this mouse at work, but unfortunately, once the cool factor of the (limited) touch interface wears off, you are left with:

    * Relatively slow drag response -- I had to adjust the tracking speed beyond normal limits using Terminal to be satisfied with tracking across the screen

    * Random scrolling -- periodically, when clicking frequently, the mouse will scroll in or out (super frustrating in games, for example, where scroll wheel changes weapons)

    * Repetitive stress injury -- I had never had a problem with repetitive stress before, but after 3 months of using this mouse at work, I get pain while using my laptop trackpad and had to switch to a trackball to get relief

To add insult to (tangible, physical) injury, the thing burnt through the AA's it came with just sitting alone for a few weeks, and the next set a few weeks after that. The amount it is used does not seem to affect the longevity, just whether or not it is on. (But beware-- switch it off to save batteries, and it may not reconnect if the computer has gone to sleep...)

I was, again, excited to try this mouse, but after months of use, I can only recommend it to extremely casual users. Power users/developers (or even just those who use the computer for ANYTHING all day), beware.

Two stars because I think folks who use it two hours a week will enjoy it without damage.

    terrible with Adobe Creative Suite

The mouse has amazing potential but it does not work with Adobe software very well. It constantly jumps to different pages and parts of the screen while you are working. I even installed Magic Prefs and set a custom defined scroll area (a very tiny area) to try to prevent it but it still happens way to frequently. The scrolling in general in Adobe is brutal, the scroll increments are completely off and you can only make large jumps around the page, instead of the subtle movement you can get on regular mac programs.

I will be going back to the might mouse with scroll ball. Apple, please work with Adobe next time to work out these bugs.

    Good mouse but...

We are a hardcore Apple family, we have multiple computers, iPads and iPhones...I use this mouse at both home on my iMAC and work on my Macbook Pro. It definately eats batteries like no other mouse. Rechargeables help this be more of a green experience. There are some scrolling issues with them at times, almost like the mouse phantom takes control and it is not clear what is happening. Also one of my mice just died one day after about 6 months of use. This equals $10 a month for a mouse. Definately not a good thing. I will probably just replace the dead one with a more standard wireless mouse. Bottom line is these are pretty good and fun looking but just not quite worth the $70.

    Too "touchy"

Been trying to use this mouse for about a month now and have decided to switch to something else. Not having a defined area for scrolling has created so many unintentional scrolls and zooms while working within applications that it's costing me too much time. It's clear that this mouse was designed around Apple's suite of programs but falls flat when working in professional applications like Flash, Illustrator and Photoshop. It's even a pain with Apple Pro apps like Logic. I used the terminal to disable side scrolling but it's still not enough to suffer this mouse any longer. Reminds me of the hockey puck mouse days. Bad for Apple, good for 3rd party mouse developers.

Great design but does not move well on the mousepad

I like the design but to move it right and left is not easy, i am not very happy with this mouse and I think its cost is very high... Now I am going to get a mousepad and try different mouse pads to see if it will move a bit faster on the pad.

This mouse is awful...awfully frustrating, anyway.

I wanted to love this mouse. Like everything Apple designs, it's gorgeous. The functionality is unlimited. But like everything Apple does, it's severely limited in its functionality under their control.

I was patient with it, trying the default setting in System Preferences, then toying with those, realizing I couldn't set the settings I wanted, then downloading freeware with extended functionality, then paid software, all to get this incredibly frustrating thing to work the way I wanted it to. Simple things, such as swiping sideways with two fingers to the right to delete items, swiping sideways with two fingers to the right to simulate "Enter", things like that.

I find it to be overly sensitive at times, unresponsive at other times, and completely unpredictable always. ALWAYS. And we all know that the bane of the computer geek is unpredictability. It's what we try to minimize and eliminate. Well, this thing will drive you crazy.

Can't tell you how much I despise the Mighty Mouse. Every day I stubbornly try to get it to do what it's supposed to do, and each time is does the opposite of the intended effect. I look back on my Logitech with fondness and devotion. I give up.

Poor battery life as a main problem

It's sleek as only an Apple product can be, but it comes with two major letdowns:

    1) The battery life is rather poor: 1-2 months with branded alkaline batteries

    2) The scroll-sensitive are is very large and you can't change it in settings. This means a lot of accidental scrolling that can be quite annoying

Love the look and the scrolling is great. Nice to be able to scroll from any point on the mouse. Not limited to the scroll wheel. Page jumpes around in any of the Adobe applications since it wants to follow your finger if you move it slightly. That gets old.

Battery life is really short. Just a few weeks. NOT VERY GREEN.

Also FYI. I thought the top was glass like the iPhone but it isn't. I used a little solvent to get some tape residue that accidently got on there. It melted the top ;-(. Still works though, just has a different texture now.

After two months of consistent use with a brand new macbook pro

Pros: This mouse is a beautiful piece of visual art, for that as well as some of the functions they tried to make it do i give it two stars.

Cons: Surface is not hard plastic so it dings and scratches very easily during travel. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT ergonomically designed and is quite awkward to use. The scroll functions are choppy and you have to touch it just right for it to register your gesture. The right click function only registers if you perform it perfectly, any lazy right clicking gives you a left click.

Overall: I love the design of this mouse, i just wish they had done more user testing before sending it to market. Sorry apple, not with ya on this one.

    Form over function

The magic mouse aesthetically is a work of art but it is not functional at all. Scrolling and or clicking with the mouse is cumbersome at best (isn't that what you want a mouse for)?In this implementation touch is very gimmicky and really doesn't add to the experience of using a mac but instead detracts from it. If all you are seeking is a mouse that looks amazing then it's ok but keep a functional mouse around to use in your desk drawer ;)

    No dashboard and no Exposé

    • Written by from Saint-Laurent

Beautiful design, really, a piece of art. Virtual buttons work well, although scrolling feels jaggy, even after I turned off the momentum. It feels a bit unnatural, it doesn't fit in the palm naturally as the old mouse used to. But most importantly, the new version lacks two important features of the previous incarnation where clicking the mini ball revealed dashboard, and clicking on the side buttons activated exposé. I am really missing these two, because I was used to quickly access many tools on the dashboard. I'm not happy with the workaround.

Looks cool but way too flat and uncomfortable

It looks cool, and the finger swipes work great, however the mouse itself is way too flat. After a few minutes of use, my fingers were cramped from having to hold the curved position instead of being able to rest it comfortable, like a regular mouse. Also, it slides so easily that it can be hard to use the the finger swipes without the mouse moving. I'm going back to a regular Bluetooth, Microsoft mouse until this is fixed.

Only 2 buttons, too light, not ergonomic

    • Written by from GOLETA

I'm not pleased with the mouse at all. There are 2 less programmable buttons on this mouse which means dashboard and expose can't be summoned as easily. To swipe, you need to apply a little bit of friction right? Well, for me that swipes the mouse about off the table. I can't pin it down with my palm and swipe at the same time without nominal strain that is sure to be carpal tunnel bound. The shape is very flat and does not fit will in your hand. Just get that "Bamboo" trackpad mouse accessory that apple sells instead of this this magic mouse...especially if you are used to the gestures on the macbook pro. Makes no sense that gestures on the macbook pro and ones on the magic mouse would be different.

    No way to "middle click"

    • Written by from Potomac

8 of 10 people found this useful

Agree with most of the comments concerning the Magic Mouse - much smoother, more responsive, nice looking, etc. However, I'm quite surprised and disappointed at the lack of virtual buttons (and gestures). The fact that there is no way to "middle click" is a glaring omission. In fact, I would think that with the multi-touch technology, there should be a way to create and customize as many buttons and gestures as one desires - but at the very least, there should be a way to "middle click" (e.g. click in the middle, two finger click, single finger tap...).

    Impossible to use with Photoshop

    • Written by from Key Largo

7 of 8 people found this useful

I spend most of my computer time working in Photoshop, fine tuning small details in photographs or refining graphic images. I had really looked forward to being free from a wired mouse and having an alternative to the Intuous4.

The pairing and set up with my MacPro was a breeze. Thumbs up to Apple for the ease of installation. However, my praise ends there. I set the mouse preferences to "fast." I had to recheck the settings more than once as I found the Magic Mouse slow and jerky. Even set at the furthest to the right, the Magic Mouse remained slower than a wired USB mouse and at times, while working on a fine detail within a photograph, the mouse would jump, causing me to begin my work again.

At other times, I would literally have to exaggerate moves to get the cursor to move within Photoshop at some points and it would simply refuse to move. Even trying to use gentle movements (strokes) the Magic Mouse was jerky and unpredictable. It would be impossible to use the Magic Mouse in fine detailed graphics without further software refinements by Apple.

I am returning my Magic Mouse. If you work with graphics or digital photos, this is NOT an Apple product for you.

The touchpad is great, and having a wireless mouse on your desktop seems like a good enough idea - until your batteries start dying on you in the middle of doing something at least once a month.

After a few years, mine started losing its connection all the time - even with full battery. I think what happens is the batteries jostle around inside and then it loses power for just a second. Then it loses connection and stops working, and I have to wait a few minutes for the computer to find it again. My mouse loses connection like 10 times a day now. It's all but useless. I'm going to have to go buy a wired mouse, because this is just stupid.

I love Apple products, usually. The Magic Mouse is awful. It eats batteries like crazy. Batteries aren't cheap and it's ridiculous how many are used.

Apple needs to come up with a solution and let's make it in America, not China.

previous mouse design would tell you when battery life is low(indicator at top of screen shows). this one just stops-no warning. this one's metal strip/bottom will fall off fairly easy. its a flimsy mouse...poorly designed
