Magic Mouse scrolling is unusable for Illustrator or Photoshop

    • Written by from Alameda

11 of 19 people found this useful

if you use Photoshop or Illustrator, you will have to turn off scrolling in Prefs. Making the entire mouse surface touch-sensitive for scrolling sounds sexy, but for PS and AI it's terrible in practice. It's way too sensitive. In Photoshop, you're constantly zooming in and out unintentionally. In Illustrator, you're constantly moving the entire artboard all over unintentionally. So you have to turn off scrolling, which means you now have a crippled mouse. Confining scrolling to a single wheel or button IS A GOOD IDEA. That way you scroll ONLY WHEN YOU WANT TO SCROLL. I'm giving away my useless magic mouse and using a simple, unsexy 3rd party mouse with a scroll wheel. That is, a mouse that works.

awful support and just an awful device

It looks nice but is way overpriced. It is not ergonomically correct and had me thinking i was feeling the effects of carpel tunnel, think it has started it but will know after going back to my ergonomically correct logitech.

No thumb support so triggered pain all down my arm, almost to my shoulder. No wrist support since you are flat. It loses connectivity all the time and the speed of it even changing it in settings is slow for my speed. I also had serious lag with it. Tried it for 2 months and donating it.

    Awful awful mouse!

This is the worst mouse I have ever owned.

    CONS
    • It is ergonomically incorrect and has been irritating/cutting my hand because of its sharp edges. The mighty mouse was much more comfortable.
    • The tracking is slower than death. Any logitech mouse can keep up with a few simple movements. To switch between monitors I literally find myself having to lift the mouse up and move it.

    PROS
    • It does scrolling really well

If you need to get any amount of serious work done. Designers i'm talking to you, then buy a logitech mouse. Much faster, accurate and more comfortable. Oh and apple I get it you dont like buttons on your mouse, but the rest of the world does.

Really Disappointed the Side Buttons are gone.

I just purchased this so called "magic mouse" not really doing any research as to what apple has taken away from the previous mighty mouse. I opened the box up synced it with my computer and realized they no longer have the side button functionality which i use religiously with my daily tasks. The "Application Switcher" option when hitting the two side buttons was one of the best features of the mouse along with the secondary click. I think apple has went to far with trying to be cool and destroying functionality. I love apple, but this is a product from them that i dislike.

Pros: Sleek, no more scroll ball to stop working, secondary click
Cons: A little too small for my hand, doesn't fit as nicely as the might mouse. No side buttons, and a lot heavier than the previous mighty mouse.

    cheers.

    This wireless mouse is awful!

Avoid this product. It loses connection to the computer very often, so you have to sit and wait for it to regain it. Yes, it regains the connection on its own, but that can take up to five minutes, virtually paralyzing the user. You have no idea how annoying that is. Save your money and buy a mouse that has a conventional connection, so you'll stay connected. I have had nothing but problems with this one, and yes....I put in fresh batteries - that did not help.

    Too Sensitive for Indesign

I got so frustrated using this mouse with Indesign that I ended-up throwing it on the floor and plugging in my previous mouse. This "Magic Mouse" may be good for web browsing, but not for page layout and design work.

whose idea was to put the on/off button on the bottom of the mouse, it turns on and off frequent and is prone to getting damaged This mouse is trash, it seem like it was made at either radio shack or toy-r-us. The mouse eats batteries real fast and it cut off on me a few times even though the battery was full. My advice do not buy this mouse. stick with the wired mouse instead.

Beyond the sleek appearance...Magic Mouse is aggravation

Magic Mouse has great looks and is very trick and fun to play with. Initially, it is most impressive! You must decide though...do you want sleek and fun...or do you want a mouse that can be productive? I have had the Magic Mouse for 6 months and I want to throw it against a wall several times everyday! Ergonomically, the shape is unnatural and wrong...the hand does not rest on this mouse the way it does on nearly every other mouse ever made. Because of its shape, Magic Mouse tends to get sideways in the hand...at which point, what you think is a left click is a right click and what you think is a swipe is a scroll, etc, etc. In no way does form does not follow function with Magic Mouse. I am sure you've already read how Magic Mouse eats batteries and how, in some applications, scrolling/zooming is absolutely BERSERK...true and true. Has Apple ever made a really decent, reliable mouse? Logitech does!

Not good for a laptop with limited room at the side while using a laptop tray. The mouse looks good but is too heavy and you constantly have to pick it up to move the pointer. This mouse has to be moved too far left and right to get the pointer where you want it. All the adjustments didn't help. It was easier to use the touchpad. I finally gave up and returned it and bought me the logitech bluetooth and works really well. Even my Microsoft mouse works really well with the laptop. Not this one. I did like the design though. Maybe I just got a bad one.

Why do you need a wireless mouse? I'll give you some good reasons:

    1. So your battery can run out. Perhaps it will be at 2am in a Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio, with no where to buy a new one. If you're lucky!

    2. So you can help fill landfills with more toxic batteries! Yay!

    3. So, when you have it on a tray on your lap with your MacBook, it will slide off and break when you sneeze.

    4. So your 2 year old son can take it, and hide it.

    5. So you can work across the room from your monitor. You can still read the monitor, right? Good thing you have a wireless mouse, right?

Hey wait, that's five reasons! Instead, let me give you THREE SUGGESTIONS Apple, Inc:

    1. U
    2. S
    3. B

    PLEASE!

Why Can't Apple Make a Decent Mouse!?

Never been happy with an Apple mouse. The Magic Mouse is too sensitive. If you simply rest your finger on the mouse you could wind up scrolling or zooming to God knows where.

Warning to serious workers - Needs options added to sysconfig to be usable!

They really need to add support for the following:

Needs option to Scroll using 2 fingers ONLY (like touchpad) or disable LEFT/RIGHT, I am constantly having it scroll drop-downs and important settings in dialogs I don't want to touch while just trying to move the mouse and making contact with my palm.

I just got one at work with a new machine and had to go back to a wired mouse because of this configuration oversight.

bottom line: if you don't want it to mess up your documents and option screens while working in important business apps or development go get a Mighty Mouse, much more usable and safe.

    no center button!

Anyone who uses a mouse for anything other than a single click will find this mouse useless. That is, until they add the proper gestures to truly be a "magic" mouse. I know that there are third-party applications to solve this, but currently they are only available on the mac. I currently use both the mac and pc side of my macbook pro and HATE, HATE, HATE the fact that this "magic" mouse doesn't have the center button option. Apple really needs to improve this!

If you are a designer, stick with the Mighty Mouse. I purchased this in hopes that the super cool options that it has would benefit all the precise work I do in Illustrator and Photoshop...not so much.

At first I loved it. It was heavy enough to where it felt substantial and LOVED the swiping up, down, and around features...until I had to actually work. The touch is far too sensitive, there is no control to help lower the sensitivity that I, a Mac veteran of 18 years, was able to find.

My biggest peeve is that it flings my artboard all over creation on it's own and cannot get into the fine areas that I need without it getting all squirrely. I have resorted to using my older, and stuck trackball Mighty Mouse and am more happy with it than I am the Magic Mouse. The control with the older version is much more precise.

The coolest thing about this mouse is....

    • Written by from San Jose

...it lets you go back one page instantly by dragging two fingers across the top right to left. In this regard its much faster and easier than a key combo and it becomes intuitive very quickly.

The people who are complaining about the ergonomics of Magic Mouse are correct. The design is too thin, and you must hold it differently and adjust your grip constantly because you don't have the range of motion with your pointer while resting the heel of your hand on the mousing surface. Yes, it is beautiful but the Mighty Mouse is a much better shape for moving the pointer.

At least the tiny non-cleanable track pea is gone. If it were not for this constant source of irritation i would prefer the Mighty Mouse heavily.

The Magic Mouse is fun and kewl, but the discomfort of using it for long periods of time make me less than thrilled with it.

Like many others have said this mouse isn't for some people. The ergonomics are gross, I got about 10 minuets into a before i had to switch back to my logitech. My hand was all Magiced out. Ontop of the poor ergonomics it had no right click. Vital for most designers and developers.

However the look of this mouse is amazing. Sitting next to an iMac it finishes a workspace off.

But functionality and safety come over design any day,

The Mouse Needs More Time At the R&D Department

Yes, the mouse looks great, but things end there.
Slight touches on top of the mouse send signals to the web browser to act erratically going to the previous page. For most who rave about this review seem to be infatuated with the design of the mouse than the functionality.
For it to be a 5 star mouse, I'd look to (*gulp*) Microsoft for a little more inspiration.

I was really excited about the new Magic Mouse, but after using it for about 20 minutes I was sorely disappointed. Scrolling is smooth and far superior to the ball on the Apple Mouse. However, my hand started to cramp up because the mouse has a much lower profile than the Apple Mouse. I am also very surprised that it's functionality is so limited. There's no option to launch expose or dashboard with this mouse... Apple recommends using F-keys to launch them instead. To me, the ability to launch expose and dashboard from the mouse were huge features of the Apple Mouse. There's virtually no customizing options on this mouse. IMO, definitely not worth the price. I will be returning this mouse ASAP.

Looks great, functions well, but disappoints

Wanted to love this mouse but it's really hard to. It looks great. I'm not adverse to the ergonomics of it, but the more I use it the more disappointing it becomes. The problem lies with the two black rails. Firstly they are magnets for dirt / dust which translates into an grinding noise and feel when using it. Biggest problem though is the rails are actually discoloring my desk and leave a black coloration on my hand. Kind of like graphite from a pencil. It's so bad I've reverted back to mighty mouse. Very disappointing.
