12-14 months total life, max. Useless now, so I have to spend $129 on another, because what choice do I have? Total fail on Apple's part.

    lame battery life

    • Written by from san jose

bought a refurb mbp with a brand new battery 17 months ago and already i have to replace the battery, says the genius bar. didn't use the battery that much until the last 6 months. pretty lame that apple doesn't make a more reliable battery. *middle-finger*

the genius bar said they can replace the batter for $99. asked about the warranty on the battery and was told 90 days. then i was told i would get a 12 month warranty on a battery purchased online or off the shelf in the store. lame.

so now i have to shell out $129.00 on a brand new battery that will probably last about another 17 months of less than average use. lame.

    Poor Lifespan

    • Written by from Peterborough

The battery called it quits just outside (a month or two) of my 1yr hardware warranty. Yes, I am very frustrated as to the performance of this battery. I properly maintained the battery and monitored its health. (this is not my first hardware failure with apple - seems to be frequent - hoping this changes).

Phone support as always tries their best, but often is bound by policy. It really is disappointing to see when things are defective (clearly) that Apple does not empower them to make things right (properly).

I purchased a new battery either way, as I need a functioning portable computer.

All the previous "good" reviews seem to be people that are talking about different batteries/hardware then the unibodies. These batteries will last on average 'just past' their warranty period (go figure?!?!)

Apples new 'built-in' battery might be a response to this issue, but we'll never know.

Swollen Battery after 1 years + trackpad unusable cause of the battery

    • Written by from San Francisco

Well, just after 1 years and 1 day, the battery fail me, it swollen on the insides and forced the trackpad unusable and bended aluminum battery door cover. Check back with apple, and they say i need to buy a new battery, which cost $129, seriously, i don't need the battery to be covered in aluminum, who's going to see under my laptop battery cover anyway?! i bet $70 goes to the aluminum cost.

after 4 macbook pro with 2 years usage for each and no battery problem at all, and tons of people with similar problem, i say this battery is a defect that needs to be replaced each year just after the warranty, so what should i do apple? get a new battery each year?

My review DONT BUY!!! just save your money for a new macbook pro!

    It's a battery, not a Mercedes!

    • Written by from BIG SKY

It's a battery, even if it IS an Apple battery. I got exactly two years out of the battery that came with my 15 inch MacBook Pro. I was dumb back then: I just forked out $99 and slapped in a new one. I got two and a half years out of that one and was only a little smarter: before forking out $129, I checked the system stats and discovered the fool thing only had 62 cycles on it! You can bet I have done some research and will be doing some cycling this time around! Maybe I can at least make it to three years on lucky number three battery? Even at this rate it was only about $3.30 a month for the second one.

    In my opinion

    • Written by from Baton Rouge

Once upon a time i believe I heard that these batteries can hold a charge longer than the original ones in 2008, which is my main reason for ordering one. I never got much time out of my battery but i also used my mbp constantly and intensively on high performance mode. i got about a two hours the first month then i never got more than an 1:30. just these past couple months my battery would only last for about 30 minutes. my battery got power cycled at least 3 times a week just from use, never on purpose, and usually more than once in a day. 830 cycles... id say i got good use out my 4 years, especially with how much i used it. never had any swelling either.

i think that most people probably leave their macbook charged all the time. thats not how batteries are supposed to be used. at least let them drain to 20% before you charge them again. if you leave your macbook plugged up all the time, what's the point of a battery? if you aren't using you macbook, dont charge it... keeping the battery charged with minimal use could definitely cause swelling... if i don't need it for a week, i don't charge it until i need it again. don't get me wrong, i leave mine plugged up sometimes for extended sessions but thats it.

i would like it to hold a charge for longer but thats the case with any battery. time to see if this battery is actually different.

They ooze quality but not without a battery! Time to pull out the PC.

    • Written by from Topeka

I could have bought a brand new computer with the amount of times I've replaced this battery... and yes I have done everything I should have with each one of them! My batteries won't even last a year and if I get an hour out of them without the meter going from 90% to like 20% it's a miracle.
I am now running this machine with no battery and have to pray that I have saved whatever I am doing when the cord pops out. I have to go on a trip and to tell you the truth I am not sure I even want to pay for another battery for this thing. You think the least they could do is give you a cheaper price for their cheap piece of junk battery. I have been an avid mac user for almost 20 years, I am highly disappointed. I think it's time to pull out the PC.

    Piece of Junk

    • Written by from Spring

Don't get me wrong, the macbook is amazing and does everything I want it to do and much more. The battery, on the other hand, dies way too quickly and doesn't even get close to the quality I expected. I have now put my battery through 400 charge cycles (in maybe a year and a half), and it already only holds 40% of the original battery life. This is ridiculous and I am really disappointed. I now have to spend more money on an already highly priced laptop. I love the macbook. Hate the battery

    Poor Battery life

    • Written by from upland

I get about 2.5 hours max out of mine even with a low power consumption SSD in it,screen brightness down to about 50% and bluetooth off and wifi on. The 2.5 hours time is if you don't open up Skype or watch any youtube videos or expect half the times otherwise. Battery times are less than half the times advertised by Apple.

    a nice lifetime

    • Written by from Vadsø

i've had my macbook pro since mid 2009, and now three years later i'm getting a warning that i have to change my battery soon.
In the beginning i remember that it last up to six (maybe seven) hours, at least through the first two lord of the rings movies...
anyways now-a-days it only lasts for two-three hours which i think is not that bad considering that i'm on my 1370 cycle, and that's no joke.
    so 5 STARS from me!

Is it the battery or the charger?

    • Written by from Cambridge

I've had my 15-inch aluminum for one year to the date -- It never seemed to charge quick enough -- After leaving it charged overnight, it might have read "70%" -- then I visited a friend last week and forgot my charger. I used hers. The battery charged to 100% in about 3 hours. Was like that all week. Never a problem and quick charges that held.

Back home, plugged into my charger and the battery charged like a snail.

Apple guy at the store tried to tell me the battery really only lasts a year. What are we -- back in the old iPod days?

This battery has lasted me 3 years, and I am getting a replacement. The battery still works but is losing it's charge. Last night I noticed that the battery has bowed out and the cover to the machine no longer fits. Wow! Overall, I am happy with a battery lasting 3 years, as I use this machine daily.

    Swollen in a year

    • Written by from Westford

I have only had my mid-2009 MacBook Pro for about a year, and the battery is swollen! I calibrated it every month like Apple suggests and it still swelled up. For a battery of this price, it should last more than a year.

    yup... batteries are not great

    • Written by from Tampa

I agree with everyone else. I've been conscientious about taking care of the battery and after 18 months, I will need a new battery if I want more than an hour of life. I am surprised to read that apple talks about such a long battery life with their macbook pro computers because I never was able to get that kind of time on mine. Apple is doing so well with their products they should have the ability to develop a battery that holds a charge for a decent amount of time for the majority of the users... no need to deceive.

    Just noticed my battery life

    • Written by from Portland

and at fully charged it only gave me a little over 3 hrs! Arrrgghhh I just started using it wirelessly for a long period tonight when I noticed the charge time. I usually just keep it plugged in (bad from what I read), now I will do the recommended discharge recharge once a month, to see if it helps, but based on the reviews it looks like it may not.

I've had my laptop just over a year, and my battery is already at less that 20% health. And no, I'm not over 300 cycles. I'm at around 180.

    Battery fail.

Why haven't I talked to apple care? I was cheap and only had a one-year warranty. Fail on my part. Wish I had read these reviews sooner.
