    Bloody Poor

    • Written by from Lowestoft

I feel Apple should replace my MBP 15'' battery free of charge!!

My MBP battery has developed a bulge which if you search google is an all to familiar problem.
I originally thought my tracker was on its way out but it was the swelling battery stopping the tracker from pushing down!!
And now my case has prised open because of the battery swelling.

The battery itself holds a charge well and lasts for at least a couple of hours.
This is a manufacturing defect and Apple should replace at their cost not mine.
After all we pay a hefty premium for Apple build quality and this defect is not what I consider quality!!

    Macbook Batteries are pathetic

    • Written by from HILLSBOROUGH

I'm a PC guy, but love Apple hardware...best in the business. So needless to say...when apple started putting Intel chips in their systems, I was thrilled. But that's not what I'm writing about here.
I bought my first Mac back in April of 2007...right after I was hired to work at an ad agency...I figured I would need one for that job..and I did. So I bought a top of the line Macbook Pro 15" for $2500 + ...I loved the machine, but the one gripe I had from day 1 was that this laptop never held more than 2 hrs of charge...despite Apple's claims.
A year later, Apple released their new unibody/aluminum Macbooks, and they were going out of their way to hype the new batteries...claiming that they lasted 6-8 hours on a single charge. So I picked up a new aluminum 15". I did everything Apple recommends to extend battery life. Ran it down to nothing...kept it in sleep mode for a few more hours....fully charged it. The while I used it, I turned off everything that drains battery life....dimmed my monitor, turned off bluetooth, turned off the keyboard illumination, and set the graphics for "better battery life"...The only thing I had on was the wifi.
So here I am with a brand new Macbook Pro 15 and out of the box, I never got more than 2.5-3 hours...which was better than the old one...but nowhere near Apple's claims. I'm at about a year old on this machine now, and the battery may hold a charge for an hour if I'm lucky. This is with a cycle count of 204 and a condition of 'Normal'. I know if I bring this to the "geniuses" they'll tell me everything is within spec. So I guess I have no choice but to buy a new one.

I absolutely agree with everyone here reviewing...despite my love for Apple hardware (these laptops are hands down the nicest computers on the market)...I'm done buying their products until they fix their batteries.
I have a newer Air with the SSD and that never got the advertised hours. I also have gone through 5....yes..count them...five iPhones (3 first gen, and 2 new 3GSs). In the case of the iPhones, it was a battery problem every time. The first 2 were covered under a warranty. The third was out of my pocket....they charged me 70 bucks for a replacement phone. It still blows my mind that i can't just swap a battery out of an iPhone...once again...best phone on the market with one overwhelming flaw...no way to replace a battery.
My new 3GS's battery died 3 months in. They wanted to run all kinds of tests at the Apple store, and I had a meltdown at the (so called) genius bar...caused such a scene that they just handed me a new phone because they didn't want a customer having a complete fit right there in their store.

Don't waste your money or time

    • Written by from Madison

I needed a replacement battery because my original will barely hold a charge. I read the reviews here and hoped they were wrong, they're not! I was careful to ensure I swapped them out correctly and gave it a full charge before each use. I also reset the power settings to factory setting. I also used "Clean my Mac" to make sure everything was ok.

At 100% battery, reading email and using the internet I was at 10% power in 2 hours 20 minutes. My old battery works better than this one.

Apple if your listening do something!!! I love your stuff we have 6 iPods, 3 iPads, 2 MacBooks and 1 20" iMac. I expect more quality than this...

    Disgustingly Horrible Notebook Batteries

    • Written by from Portland

I've owned many laptops in my day as I'm a computer scientist that's constantly on the go for my company. I have to say, the worst experience I've ever had with batteries has been with Apple's MacBooks. I love my Mac... but completely despise their batteries. So much so that I'm almost tempted to switch back to a PC... honestly. I don't want to spend $130 every 6 months on an already expensive piece of hardware just to keep the battery life at a desirable state. I simply don't understand why Apple consistently chooses to cheapen their image by using batteries that fade away and die so incredibly quick. This is a pure indication of a cheap battery manufacturer. Apple, PLEASE, do yourselves a favor and easily correct this horrible reputation you have for batteries. It's simply not worth the negative publicity. People talk about it all the time when referencing your products. It's in craigslist postings, forums, reviews... the list goes on. Find yourselves a new manufacturer for the love of god. I've owned laptops that boast half of the battery life you claim to offer but last twice as long.

I bought this Unibody MacBook Pro I'm using ONLY about 4 months ago and already the battery literally lasts about 2 hours if I'm lucky. It doesn't have to be this way... do it now. Go find a new manufacturer for your batteries. It's simple. Save yourselves from this negative publicity. It will come back to bite you in the rear end if you don't fix it. The solution isn't simply building your batteries into the laptop. I deliberately chose not to go with the built in battery version of the laptop because I know your batteries all too well... not only would I have to replace my battery in 4 months, I'd have to be without my laptop for a while. Learn from your competition... their batteries ACTUALLY hold a charge. As a company Apple does many wonderful things but I feel like they can also make some very stupid choices sometimes. I hope Apple eventually realizes how important it is in the consumer's eye to have a laptop that's actually portable because it has a battery than can hold a charge while still offering the option to swap it for long trips. Apple, don't take my word on it, talk to your customers and ask them what they think about your batteries.

    Very Disappointed with the battery

    • Written by from Toronto

My original battery went after 2 years & lucky for me I was still under warranty. Not so lucky the second time around. The second battery completely died after 10 months. Great laptop but NOT so great battery! With all the battery issues reported you would think Apple would do something about it!

    battery malfunction

    • Written by

My Macbook Pro battery is 18 months old and now not functioning, even when it's fully charged. When I unplug and run on my charged battery, the machine just shuts down. Obviously faulty but beyond the one-year warranty. Sad, Apple. Very sad.

    Bad battery design

    • Written by from San Diego

I don't get all the Apple fanatics defending poor Apple from bad reviews. I am an Apple user and have been for a long time, but this battery is just badly designed.

I have had my MBP since October of 2008. I mostly use it connected to the wall. I don't even care much how long the battery lasts, but this is the first time in my life I have seen a product that forces you to get a replacement battery because the swelling makes the trackpad unusable.

It's one thing to complain about a battery not holding charge. That's understandable and happens to all batteries after a while. However, I have had laptops for years, then passed them to my mom and dad, and the batteries are still OK. Sure, they don't hold much charge, but they also don't force you to change them if you are OK with 45 minutes without being plugged in.

It doesn't matter if you have been a MBP user for 3 years and you think your machine is the best thing since slice bread. Reading these comments makes it obvious that a LOT of people are having the same problem I'm having, and that is just a bad design. If 5% of the batteries swell, then the design should accommodate it, or Apple should replace those at no cost.

    Worst yet

    • Written by from Chicago

I brought my macbook pro 9mths ago and at this very point my battery only holds a charge of up to 30mins. I just brought a new one and it only has about 4hrs of charge in it. I love Mac but the batteries are just horrible.

I got an HP that hold a until almost the end of the day. They need to do something about their batteries.

    The only reason

    • Written by from Euclid

The only reason I'm spending 130.00 on this battery is because the battery that came with my MacPro started swelling so bad I couldn't use my pad anymore, it still kept a charge and everything but I just couldn't use my track pad this is Bull. And the filter wouldn't let me use worse words.negative 5

    Very short battery life

    • Written by from Mount Vernon

I have had my MacBook for about 20 months. From shortly after I bought it the battery would last a maximum of 2 hours. At this point it is down to about an hour. Does anyone know of a battery, other than the one sold by Apple, that will do a better job in this machine?

Battery swells up - very strange

    • Written by from Plano

The battery on my 2009 early MB pro still works but has swelled to the point where I can't even close the battery case and can't even use the computer as a portable. The battery is the original and only a little more than 3 years old.

    Terrible lifespan

    • Written by from Encinitas

This has got to be the worst battery Apple has sold that I can recall. I have 20+ users who use the MacBookPros with these batteries and maybe a few of them have done the monthly calibration. The thing is, it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference. I have replaced ALL the batteries for these laptops. Most of them were replaced after 1 year while some were replaced after 6 month of use. Terrible.

    Awful Battery

    • Written by from Rancho Santa Fe

My battery life is awful. I thought I would be able to use my MacBook Pro for work while traveling but I find it just isn't practical. Whenever I need to be away from a plug I use my old ThinkPad.

Otherwise my mac is pretty awesome. I wish they would resolve this major problem. If they put out a new, longer lasting battery I could probably be suckered into buying it. Anything would be better than this.

HORRIBLE battery Less than 1 star!

    • Written by from tucson

This battery is a rip-off. First of all, the battery life is deceptively advertised as long-lasting, you're lucky to get 45 minutes if you have 1 application open. RIp-off and overpriced!

I bought my MAC last October and pretty much 51 weeks later my battery is dying quickly. The warranty only cover 1 year, now I probably have to shell out $130 every year to keep my laptop running. Big disappointment. I would think Apple could of come up with a better battery instead of making people pay this ridiculous price each year. Wish I could use the new 7 hr battery on my Mac. But then again, how true is that advertising. Probably will not buy another Mac laptop till they either resolve this issue or at least extend the warranty of their batteries.

Love Apple, Love my MBP, HATE their batteries

    • Written by from Hannibal

Seriously, Apple makes the best computers on the planet yet the WORST batteries. Not sure how they do it, rather, don't. Long ago I had a ThinkPad by IBM, it got 8 hours battery life in 1999, in 2001 it got... 8 hours. Every MBP and my first iBook 12" in a year battery life was halved and performance hit (i.e. couldn't do as much) and within a year or two I was out $130ish every time for a new battery.

Welcome to 2010, my one year old MBP's battery at only 271 cycles is at only 49% health and can't hold a charge for more than an hour and a half... what the hey? It started at four hours and slide pretty quickly into the twos. You mean to tell me a friend's clunky four year old Dull Chumputor laptop is still clogging away at 80% of it's original battery life with a very hard pressed life and my MBP is 50% in a year?

Apple, FIX YOUR BATTERY LIFE PROBLEMS! Read these reviews, we're not fools, make your batteries more dependable or cheaper to at least take a blow off the fact people need to get new ones every year, heck, whatever your markup is, maybe that's why you have so much cash-on-hand as a company... from the battery sales.

    Battery Bulging After 35 Charges

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I purchased my Macbook and found out that I really do not take it anywhere and it mainly sits after my desk. After 18 months I only went through 35 battery cycles. I am very upset to see that my battery is expanding in size and pushing the lid away from the computer.

Horrible Battery = class action suit?

    • Written by from Anytown

I've seen a lot of reviews about this battery that sound like the experience I had so I'll add my $0.02. I've had my MBP for 16 months (16-18 seems to be the range of life for this battery.) The worst part about it is, all of my local Apple stores don't carry this model (or they're all sold out because I'm not the only one???) If I had known this battery would last me 16 months, I would be using something else. This sounds like a flaw in design or manufacturing that Apple should make right. We'll see if they do something about it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have had this laptop for about a year and a half and I am already replacing the battery. I can find the previous model of Macbook Pro batteries in abundance at every Apple Store I have been to, yet this battery is sold out everywhere and it is on a 2 to 3 week backorder. I think that speaks volumes to the dependability of this product. The battery in my old Macbook Pro lasted 3 years. The poor quality of the new Macbook Pro batteries is simply unacceptable. It is doubly unacceptable given how difficult it is to even get your hands on one. Now I am stuck using the power cable for the next 3 weeks until I can get a new battery; not really helpful when you are using the laptop for business. Great job Apple!
