    Long-lasting? Not!

I've had my aluminum macbook for less than 2 years, and I already need a replacement battery. I was told that I exceeded my number of charge cycles (allowed about 300 cycles I was at 294) and it was already dying on me after about an hour of normal use. And I never misused my battery, only did complete charge cycles and unplugged promptly when complete. So it's quite hard for me to believe that I spent about $1900 on a laptop whose battery needs to be replaced every 2 years! You have got to be kidding me. I wish they were able to upgrade the older models to have an internal 10 hr battery, i would be willing to pay for the upgrade, because it beats having to replace this one every 2 years. Hope this helps

    No support, flawed battery.

My MacBook, aluminum, is just 18 months old and only used for personal use at home. I've always charged it fully then used it until prompted battery was low. Suddenly my battery will charge for an hour, turn green and then last for 45 minutes. I went to Apple where they ran a test on my computer and told me that the battery has been "cycled" 388 times and the max is 300. My partner also has a MacBook, the white one, and has had for over two years with no battery issues. All Mac would tell me is that I'm out of warranty and I'd need to buy a new one for $129. I've read enough reviews to know something has to be wrong because I'm not alone with this issue.

Anyone who left a good review of this battery when they first got it should be obligated to post a second review a year or so down the road....Now I no nothing last forever, especially the charge on a notebook battery, but it should not go from working one day to completely destroyed the next. I was having problems with my white macbook and took it into the genius bar...they fixed the problem but I am being told my battery is trash now, and it worked perfectly before going in there. He pushed a few buttons, did some things and Bam,,,,broken battery...Here you go Sir, you need to buy a battery for 129.00....Lame

I bought my MacBook in early 2009, and started having trouble with the battery in less than a year--it ran out to quickly, didn't charge fully, etc.--and things got progressively worse from there on. Unfortunately I waited until after I had clocked 300 cycles on it before I called about a replacement... Once you pass that, you're out of warranty, and out of luck! Not satisfied.

I've only had my laptop for about a year now. I started using it for school, and I noticed the battery drains so fast now! It takes forever to fully charge, and drains in about an hour. Also, when it says how long it will take for you to run out of battery, it doesn't actually last that long. So I have to keep checking the percentage. Short battery life! Please fix this apple. Apparently, many people are having the same problems.

    Bad, Bad Battery!!

It last a little longer than 3 hours just the first time I used it unplugged, since then, the charge last considerably less, less and less, and two days ago it blowed up, it looks like those inflated metal sheet sculpture, it is thigh on the edges but fat on the center. Not fair, a $129 battery with a 2 - 3 months lead time and last less than 24 months. I think Apple should come out with an upgraded model that last longer and does not get fat.

The title says it all. I'm looking for a 3rd party battery in hopes it's more reliable than apple's.

Come on now Apple. When I bought my Macbook 16 months ago, the battery was advertised as state of the art. The battery lasted no longer than a year before it completely died. The computer will not run on battery for more than 10 minutes.

Based on the numerous similar reviews, this is not simple wear and tear, Apple. This should be covered! I am just disappointed!

    Battery Troubles

    • Written by from Houston

64 of 67 people found this useful

My first battery lasted 9 months and was replaced under warranty.

My replacement also only lasted 9 months (notice a theme yet?). Apple normally says the warranty on batteries is one year. When the replacement died they then tell me that they will not replace it. They say that it only has a 90 day warranty.

Why does the same battery have a 1 year replacement at times and 90 day at other times? It's the same battery. Apple should stand behind their products the same. If someone has already had a problem once then not standing behind it the second time is not the smart thing to do. This is very frustrating.

I'm echoing basically the same thing I'm seeing on a lot of recent reviews. Have had the Macbook for 15 months and it now shuts down with about 45 minutes remaining on the battery. Even a full charge only lasts for about an hour. Shame that it has such a short life.

battery is dead after 18 months

    • Written by from Ollers

My battery died after less than 18 months. It now only works for about 5 minutes and then dies without warning. Completely unacceptable for a product I paid more than 1000 Euro for. See technical info below.

The local service offered me a new battery (with only 3 months of warranty!) for 120 Euros. I think I will rather spend 250 Euro on a small no name notebook with 1 year warranty than running any more risks with Apple's inferior products.

I switched to Apple 18 months ago but now regret it. Do not buy their products until they have recalled all their faulty batteries at no charge to their clients!

I have the same problem. My Macbook is a little over a year old. While I still have a 25% charge, the computer dies with no warning. When I start up, I have to plug in, and the usual start-up sound is absent. Does this mean I have to buy new battery?

Apple you can design better battery

This is my second experience with apple product which died right after my warranty expired. After 1 year, my Macbook's status bar started to show "Service Battery" warning and shut down without any warning. I took it to Apple Genius Bar and they told me that the decrease in my batter performance after 1 year is very normal, I should simply replace the battery (only $125!!!) and should get 1 more year of warranty.
I dont think this is true even for lame PCs. But if this is really true its shame on apple that they can design aesthetically perfect products which does not last longer than warranty. Or their marketing strategy is to rip you over the battery or extended Apple Care. I was thinking about the iPhone 4 but now I will think a second and and even a third time.

    Poor performance over time

I have had my aluminum Macbook for just around 1 year. The battery now only maintains a charge for 1 hour, and there is not even warning when it is low - the computer just dies, causing you to lose your work (which is what led me to write this review). I do just what they say to do in terms of maintaining your battery life. And I do expect to lose some of the battery life over time, but one hour with no warning before it conks out is unacceptable.

The only other time I have had this problem is when I used my old Mac G4 overseas and there were power fluctuations, which is really bad for your battery. But I only have used this computer in the US, so there is no reason for it.

Really disappointed and now have to shell out another $124 for a new battery. Boo on you, Apple!
