Unplug Your Battery When It's Charged!

It's seems there are mixed reviews here so i'll add a positive one. If you actually unplug your computer when it's charged your battery lasts A LONG TIME! I had a roommate with the same computer bought several weeks apart and he needed a new battery after about a year. Why is this? because he never unplugged it, so when he did eventually his battery life was terrible. If you unplug it when it's charged it will work very well.

    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3883
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 579
    Condition: Normal

that's almost 600 load cycles on the original battery, with a 90% original capacity and the computer is 33 months old. That's just shy of 3 years.

On my 13" MacBookPro the battery shows 68% after 244 cycles. Already deep-cycled the battery twice, no improvement.

Swelling after 50 cycles, interferes w/trackpad

    • Written by from Princeton

I've had the battery for a few years and it has swelled after only 50 cycles. The battery pushes against the trackpad, making it very hard to use. I use the laptop almost exclusively while powered, so rarely do I use the battery. However now the battery seems dangerous, like there's a lot of built-up pressure causing it to physically swell. Why should anyone spend $130 on a replacement that could do the same thing?

    Here is my battery report:

The battery worked fine for about a year. But it started swelling after that. I was ready to pay for a replacement, but Apple does not give warranty against swelling. So you are on your own if the new battery also swells. Moreover, the Apple rep also said that it's "normal" for a battery to swell.

I've had this battery for almost 3 years, and as you can see above, over 1k cycles. I'm going to have to replace now, but based on the fact that it lasted this long, I'm not at all reticent to pay the $130.

Honestly, the MacBook batteries are generally very well built. Mine has lasted me 3 years, I'm on 784 cycles and I can still get a solid 3 hours on it! Purchasing a second battery will only give me extra hours on my laptops life :)

Needed to replace my battery as it was no longer holding any charge. I rang applecare and they told me i need to buy a new one from the store.
My cycle count was 1187 which meant it went past the consumer able amount. I had a Macbook 13" Aluminium Late 2008. 3 years the battery has lasted me.

How to get the most out of your Mac Battery

    • Written by from Washington

48 of 52 people found this useful

I have also found the battery in my Macbook to be less than great. But that is apparently a known trade-off on Apple's part. Seeing some of the reviews here, it seems clear that some people would benefit from "recalibrating" their batter from time to time. Here's how to do it (from Apple's support site):

PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD), MacBook (all models), MacBook Pro (all models), and MacBook Pro (17-inch) (all models)

The battery calibration for the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) and any model of MacBook or MacBook Pro has been updated because of a new battery released with this computer. With these computers, follow these steps to calibrate your battery:

Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.

Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.

Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.

At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.

Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

Tip: When the battery reaches "empty", the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond "empty", to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers, the computer's memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

i have had this laptop for about two years, and my battery is at 54% after 568 cycles. Batteries die so it makes sense that its time to replace it, The only problem is the price but its been two years so I should have the money laying around somewhere by now.

    My battery is Done.
But wait this is not negative!
I purchased my macbook used from Best Buy. It was a display model, undoubtedly left in continuous use, As well as abused by Patrons as well as the standard abuse. A Display model, May have to endure for just over a year. Not long after I purchased the macbook, the battery started to decline. But the Mac is still running strong and I am going to purchase a new battery for my Mac Book ASAP. I hope Give to my son to use for school. I consider this a good battery due to the conditions it most probably endured during its hiatus within the confines of being a poor lonely display. Thankfully The Macbook has a good home.

I have owned my 13-inch Aluminum MacBook for a little over two years now. The original battery is still installed in my MacBook. Below are the statistics from System Profiler for my particular battery:

    Charge remaining (mAh): 3923
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3935
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 420
    Condition: Normal

The MacBook's battery life is still 4-5 hours with about a 1/4 screen brightness, and surfing the internet. I think this is quite amazing for a two year old computer! I love my Aluminum MacBook!

My Macbook has 339 cycles on it. Once you hit 300 cycles, in some ways, everything extra is icing on the cake. My battery still has 47Wh of capacity and according to the spec sheet it hold a nominal capacity of 45Wh, so it is still within specifications. The battery should keep up to 80% of the rated capacity by 300 cycles. This is according to specifications. If your battery has passed 300 and has died, please don't complain, the battery is within specification. Most batteries made currently last 300 cycles, so that is normal. In my time with portable computers, I have seen many batteries go bad, and that is normal within certain limits. You have to know what those limits are and keep them in mind,
One thing important to note is that there are many ways to properly treat a battery to make it last longer including unplugging your computer every now and then so that your computer can use the battery. When you get the battery, use the instructions in the Apple knowledgebase to calibrate it. Never keep your computer plugged in all the time. This is bad for the battery and can result in your battery dying prematurely. This is a poor way to "baby" your battery. You can read tips on how to keep your battery in shape. They are up in the Apple knowledgebase as well. I have found the tips presented to be helpful for all of my electronics with lithium ion batteries.

I've had my Macbook for 2 years now and the battery is nearly as good as the day I bought it, as shown below. Original full charge capacity was 4100mAh, now 4080mAh... no complaints from me! Beats any PC I've ever owned!

    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3797
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4080
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 529
    Condition: Normal
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -1169
    Voltage (mV): 12140

I think the key is to make sure you use the battery appropriately - don't just leave it plugged in. Let the battery run down before recharging and you will extend it's life and usefulness.

    Horrible Battery

Im a big apple fan and I really enjoy all their products, expect this battery! I got the Macbook because of everyones review on how great they are and how they never seem to have any problems, and I never have except for this battery. It lasted me just a year during which time it would only give me about 1.5 hours of cordless use. After the one year period I have used it - it just completely died out on me. Im sorry, I really don't think it is worth spending $130 for another try at this batter.

If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Apple should pay ME to get a new battery. I have been let down by Apple. You would think by the amount of reviews saying this battery blows that Apple would do something about it. The battery lasts 40 minutes and then its dead. Junky battery Apple!
