I used this thing on and off for a year and it was always a bit touchy but now it doesn't work at all. I would suggest a direct cable for 1/3 the price. This product is faulty and should not be offered by the Apple store

I bought the adapter to use with my Macbook Pro and Samsung Tv. Initially, had some difficulty figuring out how to actually get my video to transfer to my TV. I looked on my TV settings and did not show the adapter being recognized. I did however notice my macbook screen flicker blue when I connected the adapter. I realized that the macbook and TV were recognizing each other at different times. To make it work follow these steps:
1. Turn off TV and Macbook(can just close cover and let it hibernate)
2. Connect the Adapter to TV and Mac
3. Turn TV on first VERY IMPORTANT
4. Turn on Macbook (flip cover open)
5. Look at settings on Macbook to see what display output you have.
I opted to use TV as another monitor, so I just dragged my Safari window over.
This worked for me....
Side note: did not realize sound was going to be coming through Computer than TV.
This product does what it supposed to but APPLE should have gave "some" direction to getting the adaptor to work.

okay, just to advise some people I went completely agains the reviews because I did not wanted to buy a new monitor. samsung tv monitor LE19R86BDX 720p.
Also went thru apple support over the phone, they advised me to try pressing shift on the keyboard on boot, also unplug from mains and press power button for 10seconds, which did not help with hdmi cable.
1) hdmi did not work (mode not recognised)
2) hdmi to vga adapter did not work (mode not recognised)
3) mini displayport to vga (worked flawlessly with 1440x900)

Connected the Audio, and Video, of my MacBook Pro, with OSX Lion, to my SAMSUNG LED TV. Went to: Apple Menu --> System Preferences --> Displays. Clicked on Detect Displays. The SAMSUNG TV was now an EXTENSION of the computer's screen.

The limitations of this adaptor are not mentioned anywhere on the store page.

Only by digging though support does one find out that "VGA displays that use higher refresh rates (such as 85 Hz) at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or greater may not generate video properly until you lower the refresh rate."

"May" the DAC chip on the adaptor is either designed and the firmware is written to support 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz or it is not.

The solution is simply to make technical specifications available to the buyer or at least provide the above warning amongst the overview.

I got this to connect my 13 macbook to my 37" LCD HDTV to and it worked beautifully for about one month then it just stopped. Wires gets messed up easily inside the adapter with everyday use and moving around. Really good product besides that though!

i just bought a 27 inch iMac and vga adapter easy hook up, to my 56 inch panasonic tv mirror effect, bam. itunes blast through tv, netflix is clear, i got a 56 inch computer screen. lol apple your the best. now i can play my video games from my computer on my t.v. too. when you hook it up, dont forget to read the second half of the set up. the Mirror Effect.

Very easy to use. It's kind of like a link between the PC world and Mac, small and easy to large, clunky, and hard. The only thing I would recommend is that Apple also sell a cable that has a female Mini DisplayPort so that it is Thunderbolt compatible.

Just bought this and a samsung sa550 for my macbook. I plugged it in and it worked. I have to say that those people having problems with it, it is most likely a user problem and not a hardware one.

it worked on my AOC monitor that i had as a spare monitor.
