Some reviewers reported problems with this adapter; I bought it anyway as the Apple site indicated it would work and I didn't see any alternative.

It works great. At least for me. I'm using it to hook up my old Samsung SyncMaster 175v VGA monitor to my new MacBook Pro 13" Retina (using the Thunderbolt port). I am not using it for sound. (Some reviewers were disappointed that the adapter did not work for sound; I wouldn't expect it to but have not looked into that.)

Two critiques: First, I don't think Apple is very clear that the Thunderbolt port can be used as a "Mini DisplayPort." (It can be, but it wasn't immediately obvious as it should have been.) Second, at nearly $30, I feel like I'm being gouged a bit. Mr. Cook, I already paid a premium for my Macbook. (Not to mention my iPads, iPhones, iPods, other Macbook....)

I also laughed a little at the classic Apple packaging -- totally over the top. This being just an adapter, I would have been ok with less ornate packaging, especially if you could have sold me this thing for $9 instead of $29 -- or made it in the USA.

I would give it 5 stars but deducted one for value -- this thing should be less expensive.

Works flawlessly transmitting video, but as others have said, the female port on this adapter is recessed flush with the casing and standard screws on a male VGA cable aren't long enough to reach the threads on the adapter. I have to use rubber bands to secure the adapter to the VGA cable (thankfully, the rectangular design of the adapter makes this easy). I even attached some #4-40 standoff screws to the adapter threads, hoping this would avoid having to use rubber bands. Unfortunately, with the standoff screws in place, the VGA cable pins could not now reach the female port, as the port is recessed too far. You would need shorter screws. Not worth the hassle, so I'll use rubber bands to avoid the cable coming unplugged. I love Apple products, but sometimes you have to wonder what they're smoking with certain design changes.

Try to connect your mac with any video and you'll be very satisfied of this. You can instantaneously get two screen in which work - you can drag and drop your open windows directly on the other screen - and naturally mirror your desktop if you want. 4 stars because although it is really a good product costs too much.

I teach at a University and a couple of times, students have instantly fried this adapter by plugging it into the Ethernet port. This seems to instantly render these things useless. However, the bright side is that Apple has provided exceptional, no questions asked, instant support.

It converts your Mac's HDMI signal to VGA. Done. That's it.

If it doesn't work, you have a monitor that doesn't support the refresh rates of your Mac's graphics card.

Or, if you assume VGA carries an audio signal (!?) which VGA never has since it's inception (unless your hack the hardware yourself to do so), then you might be disappointed.

But your disappointment stems from ignorance, not the fault of the product.

I bought the minidisplayport-vga adaptor for my Sanyo tv, hooked it up, and it works great. The only real problem comes within the resolution options for a second screen on the Mac OS, so there really isn't a problem with the adapter. Either way, it isn't too fuzzy, it stays connected, and is overall a good product to own.

Title says it all. It does what's needed (for me at least). Im using a LG Flatron and it works just fine. Only wish it had a longer cord. The short distance between the MiniDisplay and VGA ports is small enough that it interferes with my USB devices on my MacBook Pro 13"

I struggled for about 20 minutes to make it work with a macbook pro an infocus projector, was about to give it up and return the adapter to the store when I realized that macbook pro is a high resolution monitor, and infocus projector has low resolution (as the majority of the projectors).

So after I lowered the resolution everything worked great.

I bought the adapter to use with my Macbook Pro and Samsung Tv. Initially, had some difficulty figuring out how to actually get my video to transfer to my TV. I looked on my TV settings and did not show the adapter being recognized. I did however notice my macbook screen flicker blue when I connected the adapter. I realized that the macbook and TV were recognizing each other at different times. To make it work follow these steps:
1. Turn off TV and Macbook(can just close cover and let it hibernate)
2. Connect the Adapter to TV and Mac
3. Turn TV on first VERY IMPORTANT
4. Turn on Macbook (flip cover open)
5. Look at settings on Macbook to see what display output you have.
I opted to use TV as another monitor, so I just dragged my Safari window over.
This worked for me....
Side note: did not realize sound was going to be coming through Computer than TV.
This product does what it supposed to but APPLE should have gave "some" direction to getting the adaptor to work.
