    Beware - Certain Monitors Have Problems With This Adapter

    I bought a new Alu MacBook back in November 2008. After a few weeks I decided to buy one of these adapters.
    Every 5 mins or so my screen goes black for 2-3 seconds before coming back on. This has been mentioned by other reviewers here but just wanted to add this is a common problem.
    I have called AppleCare and been into Apple Stores too many times. Apple do not appear to even acknowledge there is a problem! Look on Apple's own Forums and you will see the numbers having issues. I would stay clear until Apple fix the issue.

    Works with MacBook Pro 13" Retina (and old Samsung monitor)

    Some reviewers reported problems with this adapter; I bought it anyway as the Apple site indicated it would work and I didn't see any alternative.

    It works great. At least for me. I'm using it to hook up my old Samsung SyncMaster 175v VGA monitor to my new MacBook Pro 13" Retina (using the Thunderbolt port). I am not using it for sound. (Some reviewers were disappointed that the adapter did not work for sound; I wouldn't expect it to but have not looked into that.)

    Two critiques: First, I don't think Apple is very clear that the Thunderbolt port can be used as a "Mini DisplayPort." (It can be, but it wasn't immediately obvious as it should have been.) Second, at nearly $30, I feel like I'm being gouged a bit. Mr. Cook, I already paid a premium for my Macbook. (Not to mention my iPads, iPhones, iPods, other Macbook....)

    I also laughed a little at the classic Apple packaging -- totally over the top. This being just an adapter, I would have been ok with less ornate packaging, especially if you could have sold me this thing for $9 instead of $29 -- or made it in the USA.

    I would give it 5 stars but deducted one for value -- this thing should be less expensive.

    I'm so frustrated. We love Apple in our school district but these adapters wear out so quickly. The last two that we purchased didn't even last two months. Very disappointing.

    Great for PC Projectors

    I use my adapter for connection to a PC projector during meetings that require presentations. I am extremely happy with the product. I was formerly a PC user and whenever I would connect to a PC projector, I would have to make adjustments in order to fit the screen resolution.

    I connect the adapter to my Mac Air, and it instantly comes on without any adjustments. I have to make presentations at different customers that have different types of projectors. It's never let me down- connect every time without adjustments, and without failure.

    loose connection

    Connection is VERY loose ... slightest touch and it disconnects! And that's oodles of fun ... really.

    But ... I need the cable. When in doubt duct tape. :)

    Works, but you need to set up the resolution

    I struggled for about 20 minutes to make it work with a macbook pro an infocus projector, was about to give it up and return the adapter to the store when I realized that macbook pro is a high resolution monitor, and infocus projector has low resolution (as the majority of the projectors).

    So after I lowered the resolution everything worked great.

    Stopped working!

    Used this cable for a few months. Worked flawlessly. Big presentation day comes and I can't get it to work in client's boardroom. Red faced and frustrated I had to stand in front of the client and apologize on behalf of Apple. I was a PC guy and switched to Mac b/c of design and ease of use. Have to rethink that......

    Might not work between MacBookPro 8,1 and display LG W2353V

    LG W2353V (a 1920x1080 native) did not correctly identify through the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA" adapter, but *did* through the "MiniDisplayPort to DVI" adapter, when used with a new MacBook Pro 8,1 (early 2011).

    Using the VGA adapter, the W2353V only identifies as "VGA" and I am unable to use the higher resolutions. (I think "VGA" might be a fallback when it can't identify the device).
    I found a solution: Using "Mini DisplayPort to DVI" adapter instead (with a DVI cable) *worked* - I was able to test it because when I purchased my MBP8,1 I also purchased both adapters). The W2353V has three ports on it: VGA, DVI, and HDMI.
    I did also test using the "Mini DisplayPort to DVI"
    inline with a long Belkin DVI to HDMI cable I already owned, and that also worked
    with the MBP8,1:
    W2353:
    Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotation: Supported
    Television: Yes
    .

    I do not know why the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is unable to identify this particular display.
    I do know that this same display works fine (gets recognized) by my older MBP 2,1
    using a DVI to VGA adapter of that same era. (That's an old full-sized DVI to VGA
    adapter by Apple, though, not this new Mini DisplayPort, and also talking to an older MacBook Pro 2,1)

    This testing was done with both MBPros (the old 2,1 and the new 8,1) running
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8 plus all latest updates (including firmware) through today (07/22/11).
    Hope this helps someone - who like me, is buying the latest MBP, and needs to
    use it with the same external display as the older MBP.

    Doesn't work properly!

    I got this for my 15' High End Macbook Pro for connecting to my Samsung 23" monitor. Disappointingly it supports all the resolutions but does not support the native 1920 x 1080 resolution. The display is visible but the screen is moved to the sides leaving a big black bar in left of the screen.

    Works Fine at Times

    It doesn't fit tightly on the projector cable, but that has not been a problem. The biggest problem is when I've been using the computer and the projector for a while during the school day, my computer screen will just go "white" and the only way to resolve the issue that I've found so far is to re-boot the computer which is a major inconvenience in the middle of a lesson as I have everything I need for the lesson open. It doesn't happen all the time which is why I went with 2 stars instead of 1, but it when it does, it wastes my instructional time which is very valuable in language arts.

    Does its job-with a Samsung

    MacBook Pro to Samsung TV. No problem. Taught my wife how to mirror the display and she can watch all the Netflix streaming movies she wants to, using the TV.

    Awesome Product!

    I recently purchased a 13-inch MacBook Pro and the screen is a good size for when your not at your desk but I decided to go ahead and get the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter so I could hook it up to my 20-inch LCD Monitor when I'm at my desk at home. So, I bought it and brought it home and I plugged everything in and it instantly recognized my monitor all I had to do was set the resolution higher so it looked better on the bigger screen! The adapter is nice and compact so you can carry it around with you in your laptop bag if you wanted to. I didn't have any problems with the plug falling out of the socket like some people had been complained about, the plug seems to stay in well enough so as to not fall out but also loose enough to be taken out without any hassle. This is a very nice product and I would recommend it to anyone looking to attach a larger monitor to their MacBook or MacBook Pro!

    Cable "works" but has issues

    This cable does the job but the connector screws to the VGA don't fit properly and I needed to use electrical tape to keep them together.

    Also, I work at a College and we provide these adapters for student loan. It is VERY frustrating to purchase a new $34.00 adapter every 4 months because Apple keeps changing the "standard".

    Just got a Macbook Pro 13" and the adapter works seamlessly with my projector. There were non in the Apple Store by my house and I was told that it didn't exist by a genius there, but I found it online and it works well. :)

    Works perfectly with my VGA monitor and my company's overhead projector. Caution: This is NOT a TV adapter, it is an adapter for a VGA compatible monitor.

    Blinking monitor with my Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

    Dear Apple,
    I am fan of your products, but this is getting strangely disappointing.

    I have a 26" Benq monitor, and with my previous MB Pro it was already pretty complicated to synchronize it in full external screen definition. You needed a trick: put the Mac in standby, then open and close fast, etc...

    Now, with my new MB Pro and the Mini Displayport to vga adapter, not only you didn't fix this problem, but I am experiencing constant blinks (every 3-5 minutes).

    I have noticed that there are many other unanswered complaints regarding this matter.

    I am tired of searching for forums throughout the net; is there any way I can get a feedback about this?

    I was hesitant to buy this adapter at first because of all the bad reviews. However, I was wanting to project my Late 2008 Macbook's screen on to my HP w2207h monitor. I'm glad I ended up going and purchasing this adapter! Plugged it in and worked without one single glitch. I'd definitely recommend this adapter to someone looking to project their tiny 13" Macbook screen onto a much larger screen.
