I am a new Mac User and am getting extremely frustrated with the workaround I had to do in order to show a display on my Sony Tv. Luckily being an engineer I was able to figure out how to get it working in two hours... but it is only a temporary fix, as soon as I unplug it it wont work again.


When I first plugged my Macbook Pro (Late 2011 Lion 10.7.2) into my 40" Sony TV (KDL-40SL150) via VGA it wouldn't connect for some reason. I know it wasnt the VGA cable, as I had directly unplugged it from my desktop. I also know ti wasnt my Mini DisplayPort to VGA as I tested it on a Samsung SyncMaster 204BW and it worked immediately. After banging my head against the wall I found that if I mirrored the display, unplugged it from the monitor into my tv, and selected the correct resolution 1280x960 @60Hz that it would show up on my Sony TV. But every time I clicked the box to turn off Mirroring it stopped functioning. I found that I had to show displays in the menu bar and then after I unclicked Mirror Displays I could go up to the monitor and return the resolution to 1280x960.


This FINALLY got it to work. Unfortunately every time I reset/close my computer I would have to redo this nonsensical process.


It is obvious that the Macbook CAN display to my TV, but it wont. Is there a program where I can set it up, and then save teh settings so I just have to click a button to get it all working? Is there a way to Force Detect? This is crazy!

I looked in the Thunderbolt section and it says no device is connected... this is nonsense!

Please give me a work around for this. How can I manually set resolution to 1080? How can I save the monitor configuration so I dont have to do this every time?


The only reason this works is because it thinks my TV is my SyncMaster monitor! Ridiculous!!! Is this some plot to get us to by Thunderbolt Displays???

i don't understand all the negative comments, I am a new Mac user so still learning the OS differences but the VGA adapter gave me no trouble at all just plugged it in selected the VGA source input on my 42" Nikai flat screen LCD TV to find my laptop view mirrored on the TV.

I did try different resolutions from my MAC System preferences - Hardware - Displays. I found that the only resolutions that worked were 60 Hz frequencies.

One final note although I selected different resolutions to get a full screen picture I found that once I closed the laptop clamshell screen the TV automatically became fullscreen as the main view with the laptop screen automatically shutting down. I could then drive my laptop, view videos from iTunes by using the Trackpad. Very pleased with the VGA Adapter.

Well, on Lion it's work perfect! But when you install win7 (boot camp) this don't work :/

I use this to attach my macbook air to a projector. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews as they work fine and last a while. It is a little expensive I guess but it is good quality and does seem to last a while. I would recommend this.

I work in a school district where we have had to replace many of these where they just stop working. It gets expensive very quickly. This is a poorly constructed product, and you risk having it just die on you for no good reason.

I've bought two of these and I'm not happy. Twice it has just abruptly stopped working for no reason. It worked great at first both times. Now I need another one (or something comparable... Again.

if you connect to a TV samsung it works only if you turn on first the tv and then the MAC.

But going deeper it seem a driver problem.
On vista and 7 installaed on boot camp it works everytime!!!!!!!!

Apple, please check the external VGA to a samsung monitor

Used this cable for a few months. Worked flawlessly. Big presentation day comes and I can't get it to work in client's boardroom. Red faced and frustrated I had to stand in front of the client and apologize on behalf of Apple. I was a PC guy and switched to Mac b/c of design and ease of use. Have to rethink that......

bought it few weeks ago, I used it for my Keynote presentation. This adapter is simple, elegant and easy-to-use. In my opinion I think the owner is responsible for the care and use of this device. The first time i plugged it in my MacBook Pro Thunderbolt port it was easy, effortless. works fine. Thumbs up APPLE :) I wish that there would be an original Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter.

Worked well for a month or so, but didn't last any longer than that.
