With new firmware in Adapter now works with Samsung LCD TV

With the old firmware, the Adapter did not work with my LN-S4095D 46 inch LCD TV. The new firmware for the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter now fixes all of these problems. My Samsung LCD TV now works great, thanks Apple for fixing this!

    Issues with new macbookpro

I'm having similar issues with my macbook pro since June when I bought it. Eventually fed up, I took the macbook pro back. The geniuses at the Apple store could not find the problem so they sent it somewhere else to be evaluated. Once there, they put in a new hard drive and system board. Guess what, still having the same problem. Using the same cable on my old macbook never presented this problem. If I restart the computer it freezes and won't boot. I'm beginning to regret the purchase of my $1,600 computer when I could've bought a cheaper one that works. Quality is definitely suffering since the service at the genius bar only made me mad when they basically told me that if they can't simulate the problem in the store I'm out of luck. Maybe this review is more of a reflection of the macbook pro itself and not the adaptor. But, when I buy any product especially from Apple (with premium prices), I expect it to work consistently. This is far from my experience.

Screws won't attach - also had temporary issue with detection

    • Written by from Needham

The screws of my VGA connector don't reach the embedded nuts of the apple adapter, which are too far below the surface to be engaged by the screws. This is either poor quality of construction in my unit or poor design overall. However the adapter does have a decent friction fit so I'll keep it as trying to get another is a waste of my time (but writing an overly long review isn't, apparently).

I also had an initial problem with no monitor detection like other reviewers (I have a Samsung SyncMAster 192N) but after I rebooted, the monitor was detected. Furthermore, if I unplug and plug the adapter in, it will remove then re-detect the monitor. So I'm not sure if the detection problem is that of the adapter. Maybe it has to do with the video circuit. Again, works enough for me.

    Poorly documented

    • Written by from Berkeley

37 of 43 people found this useful

The documentation says this adapter lets you connect your computer to any "standard analog" device. Does any manufacturer describe its product as a "standard analog" device? So, the buyer doesn't know whether Apple warrants the adapter as compatible with any particular target device.

I have a Samsung 450 (LN32D450G1D), and its (nearly incomprehensible) documentation describes it as a "digital" device, so I can't assert that this adapter should work with it. And it doesn't. My MacBook Pro (early 2011) doesn't recognize the Samsung monitor when connected via this adapter. But my ancient G4 PowerBook (2001) works just fine with the Samsung when directly connected with the same VGA cable (for which no adapter is required).

If Apple were more helpful, it would post a compatibility table with each such adapter and let users fill in "yes" and "no" for any combination of host and target device.

Watch max resolutions on dual monitor setup with this adaptor!

In addition to the Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor, I purchased this Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor for my dual monitor setup on Mac Mini (2009). Worked great with my first set of lower resolution monitors that only had VGA in. However, upon upgrading monitors to higher resolution, I found out the hard way that there is a limitation on the resolution this adaptor will support. While the Mini-DVI to VGA worked fine in 1680x1050 mode, this adaptor did not! It only would work at the next resolution down, 1600x1200, not acceptable for identical dual monitor setup. Discovered that it was because of the analog output of this adaptor will not support resolutions this high. Fortunately the monitors also had DVI connectors, so I purchased the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor instead and used theMini-DVI to DVI adaptor that came in the Mac Mini box. Everything now works fine but I am out another $29. Moral of the story: Go all DVI for best image quality and support for highest resolution, if you can!

    Not a practical design

    • Written by from Auckland

33 of 35 people found this useful

I feel Apple designers have foregone practicality of use for aesthetics.
The adapter provided does not fit conventional vga plugs securley.
The shoulder around the female plug prevents the use of standard fittings, leaving the screws unable to attach the two plugs together without the use of oversized screws. I have tried both supplied Data Projectors/Monitor cables from Sony and Canon with no avail. As well we use custom made leads for the projector these plugs and these are even more problematic due to the retaining flange that holds the plug plate in place.

The only possible option has been for us to purchase adapters that work from a third party

On the hole a poor design to the adapter. A recent outside presenter attended the school to give a presentation with their MacBook Pro and I had to hold the two plugs together with rubber bands. The adapters we had with the standard MacBooks before had the female socket standing proud and did not give any problems.
As it is now the Ministry of Education position for supplying MacBook Pros in the future for Teachers I see the problem increasing.

I feel that the adapters plugs have always had a weak link at both ends of these adapters plugs, due to the weight of cable connections and attaching plug. This puts a tremendous pressure on the Mac adapter interface and defiantly needs a redesign quickly.

    Complete fail with '12 MBA

This connector does not work with the 2012 Macbook Air. Period. Tried connecting to several external VGA displays and was unsuccessful in each case, despite trying every conceivable combination of resolution settings, powering off and on, connecting and disconnecting, etc. Just doesn't work. Until Apple solves this problem, I would highly caution Macbook Air owners against this product.

    Why not redesign this adapter?

    • Written by from Paradise

As noted by others, the housing does not allow a proper attachment with a standard VGA cable. The female connecters are set too deep for the male VGA connectors to reach. I, like others, have resorted to the use of duct tape to hold the cable to the adapter. I don't understand why Apple does not listen to the suggestions and modify the design. (Used left over duct tape on iphone4 for good measure...)

Works but cheap quality and expensive

    • Written by from Calgary

34 of 38 people found this useful

Summary: Works on Macbook Pro with Samsung TV and projector. Cheap quality and expensive.

    Detail:
I love how user friendly, virus-free, and stable Macs are, but I hate Mac accessories. All the cables that go with Mac products were cheap to produce and the quality shows it; but Apple marks up the price because they know you'll pay for it.

The wrapping at the joints, like those found on the power adapter, headphones, or iPhone USB cables, end up splitting due to stress from wear even when handled with extra care. Cables from non-Apple devices are constructed so that they allow some flex to relieve some stress which adds life to the product (and reduces e-waste).
The packaging for the adapter is unnecessary and wasteful - this adapter could have been sold as a loose item in a bin to reduce the usage of plastic and paper, and also reduce transportation costs and pollution by packing more items in a smaller space.

Besides the negative environmental impact of cheaply produced electronic accessories, you have to consider the financial aspects of Mac accessories. Having spent close to $3000 on a Macbook Pro, it would be nice if Apple offered some complimentary accessories with the initial purchase. But for argument sake, let's say that it would intact additional cost as a whole to Apple products. Selling a single adapter for $35 that only cost pennies to produce is a bit much. This accessory should be priced more reasonably at about $5. Because the mini-display port is an propriety technology, consumers have little choice but to pay whatever price determined by Apple .

What I would like to see from Apple in the future is that they produce higher quality accessories, reduce the environmental impact, and price their accessories more reasonable. On the plus side, it works out of the box without any hassle as expected.

    Beautiful

I use the adapter primarily for connecting to projectors for keynote presentations and, as you might expect, it works perfectly for that. Recently, I tried using it to connect to my Toshiba Regza 42RV535U 42" 1080p tv, and it is fantastic. I'm streaming Netflix movies with ease in beautiful quality and using every inch of screen space.

What can I say, it does what it's supposed to do. Not sure what all the negative reviews are about (unless of course your adapter is DOA, in which case just have it replaced).

    Can Apple Help??

    • Written by from Providence

Can Apple weigh in on this? I have a Samsung LCD and the VGA cable I have worked fine with my PC. Then I bought this when I got a new 13" aluminum Macbook and it doesn't work. Lots of people say it has to do with grounding pins on the VGA cable, but why does that same cable work with my PC? Why doesn't the Macbook work? Help!

Just acquired a new Macbook pro (really nice bit of kit). Connected it to my Samsung 22" monitor via this converter. Now get the old blank sync screen every five mins. Makes me want to put my head through the screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this?... After reading the other reviews appears not. Please fix this Apple!

The adaptor works, but why not simply make a mini display port to hdmi cable? It would be cheaper and eliminate the big ugly connector needed to hook 2 disparate cables together. Come on Apple. After creating the beauty that is the new MacBook, you shortcut the cables?

This mini adapter works well for small external monitor but when it comes to 1900x1200 external monitor, the display start to give an annoying jitter. Proven with 2 separate purchased Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapters and two 1900x1200 24" different made monitors with a 15" MacBookPro i7 QuadCore.

Note: There is no problem with my Sony notebook VGA output for these monitors.

    TO ALL SAMSUNG LCD OWNERS

35 of 42 people found this useful

This adapter works just fine, just change the VGA cable that you got with Samsung LCD. It misses some wires in it, and this is why this displayport adapter wont work with it.

    P.S.
Apple should test this issue and write a notice somewhere, cause many users waste a lot of time experimenting this.
