    Disappointed...

Cannot understand why Apple would not go ahead and include this adapter with the Mac Mini instead of the DVI !! Absurd! Have spent a significant amount of money with Apple recently to add some nice items to my classroom. Come on, Apple! Help us out here! Have LG flat screens waiting to be connected, and a useless adapter.

    Works fine, but...

The metal female threads are set too deep within the plastic piece to receive the male bolt of most VGA connectors. It's frustrating because, without being threaded together, the adapter often falls off the connector in mid-presentation. I think Apple put aesthetics over function on this one. LIke all Apple products, it looks great, but making the female receiver flush and uniform with a thick, white plastic facing renders it useless when it comes to threading. Apple is sometimes guilty of design arrogance and I think this is one example of their purist design philosophy negatively effecting usability.
    End of rant.

Everything Apple touches is magic, even non-apple products like my sony 17" LCD screen that adapts to my new macbook to mirror the image. Achieving adequate clarity on the larger screen requires patience and you have to accept that, not being apple, it will never be as bright and perfect as on the apple laptop. If you are looking for perfection, forget about adapters. But if you want a piece that connects (in my view) older technology with the newer and better macs, then this is for you.

Very good and does what it is supposed to. The only thing bad about it is that the screws from my VGA cable won't go in to it. It might only be my cable, but it might also be the adapter. Over all good picture and a decent value.

Works Well With My Mac Mini (Late 2009)

The only problem I've had with the product is when using with older VGA connection cables, where the side-screws aren't long enough to reach the hole, but the VGA signal still goes through with no problems.

Using iMac 21" and this had no issue extending the display or mirroring to my 60" pioneer plasma.

This cable only carries video. Not much can go wrong with it.

The price seems rather steep, unfortunately there is no other cheaper alternative.
Works effortlessly and there have not been any problems so far at all!

I use this adapter everyday at work - and disconnect it several times a week - and reconnect it. I have not had problems. Some of the issues described I believe are related to changing display settings (mirror display etc) The best use of this cable for everyday workflow is to make use of two screens- the laptop and the external monitor next to each other. It is important with all kinds of cables to avoid too much pressure on the port or the cable.

Bought the item to play .avi's form my macbook to my Sharp HDTV. Good to go!

Made the first mistake of buying a mini-dvi to VGA adapter but guess what.. they don't work with the new macbooks. Luckily Apple now displays images of the connection plugs so now you shouldn't go wrong.

The adapter works perfectly, just as you'd expect. The only problem is that the screws on my VGA cord don't stay into the adapter. I don't know why (misaligned holes? too deep?), but it's a definite issue. As long as the adapter rests on a surface and there's no force pulling on it, it's fine.

Of course, you could always use tape.

Works half the time when using as only video output

There are numerous circumstances where the external display will not work. If you plug it in after you were in a session it will extend the desktop from the laptop display to the external monitor, however if you want to only use the external monitor it will not work reliably. More often than not the display will flicker, go on and off, or will not sync.

One way to get it to work every time is to power off your MB, hook everything up, power it on, and shut it immediately! If you don't, you will run into problems.

Lastly, often times when it goes to sleep the display will not wake up. It will initially appear that it is going to work, show the desktop, but then it will go black. It will continue to cycle on and off until you power it off, turn it back on, and shut it immediately.

This kind of performance with an external display for a laptop as absolutely ridiculous; there are those of us that need to use an external display for work, presentations, and the like. I can't believe after all this time (over a year) this still isn't resolved.

I use this cable with a late-2008 MacBook aluminum and NEC 1770GX. I watch movies/videos on the NEC while surfing the internet on my MacBook. It works perfectly. Set up was negligible -- just a minute to plug in the cable. Refreshingly simple and highly recommended.

Didn't work with any of the three vga-screens that I connected to my imac 24". Didn't know that I had to download a software patch first (!!), but after installing that, still no show. Is the adapter likely to be defective or the rediculously small and vulnerable Mini DisplayPort?

I needed this to do a presentation for class but I was worried because of all the negative reviews. Bottom line is, night before the presentation I unhooked the monitor that was connected with my families one windows desktop, plugged the adpater into my 13 inch MBP and the screen automatically adjusted, I selected mirror screens and it worked as smoothly as a brand new Ferarri! I don't know about performance with TV's but it works great with my monitor. Only thing is that it's a bit short, and it discolors easily.
