i am extremely dissappointed, PLEASE CHECK SPECIFICATIONS ON YOUR MAC BEFORE BUYING CABLES LIKE THESE.YOU WOULD THINK ALL MACS ARE BUILT THE SAME WAY UNTIL SOMETHING YOU HAVE WAITED FOR A WHOLE MONTH DOES NOT FIT. APPLE SHOULD SHOW SPECIFICATIONS, NOT JUST PICTURES..DO NOT BUY..DO NOT BUY

It comes off about once a day.

Written by SL from fort lee

The display adapter is so small and lacking any fasteners it falls off very easily just from the weight of the VGA cable.

I ended up just taping the adapter to the Mac.

Its such a obvious design flaw. Because of this I cannt really recommend using a Mac for mission critical assignments. Once the cable falls out, it often crashes the system.

Just a little shake of the table or someone bumping into the Mac will cause the adapter to slip out, losing all work on the system. Even with the tape the adapter slowly comes lose.

Not only was the actual connection to the vga cable horrible, it caused my display to be messed up. When I attempted to change the display back to the original settings, system preferences would not quit and the computer would not turn off normally.

    No image anymore

    Written by JW from VÄSTERÅS

I bought this adapter in February 2009 and used it to connect my unibody macbook to:
    1. Panasonic PT AE500 Projector
    2. Samsung 42" Plasma
    3. My External 19" LG LCD

I worked for the first four days with the projector. Then it stopped working.
I then tried the TV and the Monitor as well, no dice. In system preferences the screen is not detected at all. I have tried different cables and monitors.

When I try to upgrade the firmware (Mini_DisplayPort_to_VGA_Firmware_Update) it says my monitor needs to be connected for the upgrade. It is. But the Mac won't detect the screen.

This adapter is so sensitive that if I breathe wrong it will disconnect from the back of my mac mini. The result is i lose my Samsung Syncmaster 225bw monitor and cant get it back short of holding a voodoo ceremony. What a pain!

    Design Flaw: Check before buying!

    Written by SN from Hawthorne

    Sep 19, 2009

The adapter cannot be secured to a VGA cable. You can tell just by looking at the holes; the first few millimeters of the holes are smooth plastic and the threads are recessed. This results in the adapter not having the ability to be secured to the cable, and every time it moves, the video becomes distorted. After discovering the flaw, I went back to the Apple store and looked at the rest of the Mini DisplayPort VGA adapters...they all had the same flaw. Wait until they fix this before you buy one.

    Works but is poorly engineered

Written by JG from Hawthorn Woods

    Aug 29, 2009

The adapter works, but it adds to the clutter due to apple's putting all the connectors on the left. To make up for the poor placement of the display port, this cable should be at least a foot long to get some of the clutter behind the computer. the display port (usually always connected when on the desktop) is the front most port, getting in the way of the USB ports (which usually get plugged in and out). A 3-6 foot cable would be better to clean the cable mess.

I was using the miniDVI to VGA adapter on my Macbook (black) just fine with a Hanspree 21 inch HDMI display. I recently got a Macbook pro and the old adapter didn't fit on the Mini Displayport on the Pro so got this VGA adapter. Now the text is fuzzy as I type this and it just doesn't work as well.

    Poorly designed connectors

Written by CY from Los Angeles

    Aug 13, 2009

I do a lot of video work and these adapters don't securely connect to most VGA cables I've used. The two threaded holes are too deeply recessed so the VGA cable bolts don't connect (sorry for the weird terminology, but Apple appears to have censors that block the word "s see are ee double u). I end up needing to tape the two cables ends together to keep them attached.I never had this problem with Apple's DVI/VGA adapters. My recommendation: don't waste your money.

I previously had my HP PC connected to my Vizio TV which worked fine. When I connected the MacBook via the adaptor it showed my screen saver but nothing else. I tried to modify the display characteristics e.g. refresh rate in the system preferences but could not get it to work. I can't find anything online to help either.

    Bad Product

    Written by MW from Bellevue

    Jun 27, 2009

So I bought this from the Apple store today so I could use it at home.

When I got home, I booted up my Unibody-Aluminum Macbook, plugged the adapter into my computer, plugged in the VGA cable from my HP Pavilion monitor. Then my Macbook lagged a couple of seconds before the Display settings opened up, nothing is displayed on the external monitor at this point. On the Display settings, I set the resolution for the 2nd monitor to the appropriate numbers. After lagging for another couple of seconds, it adjusted the resolution of my Macbook, instead of the external monitor (which still wasn't displaying anything). I then tried to connect/reconnect the adapter to see if it was a connection problem and then my Macbook just froze, forcing me to shut down the laptop by holding the power button. I tried this thrice more, and nothing seemed to appear on my 2nd monitor.

    Junk

    Written by SH from Arlington

Physically, the design of this adapter barely allows you to get a good solid connection to a VGA cable. Apple was too concerned with making it pretty and the flush surface just gets in the way. It does NOT work at all with my Samsung plasma HDTV, and when connected to my smaller Toshiba 720p TV, the picture periodically drops for a second or two every several minutes. This new Mini DisplayPort they stuck us with on the new MBP's is just a FAIL all around from everything I read.

Such a junky piece of hardware. Dropping the analog output and only putting DVI-D through. Do they want to have people buy two overpriced adapters, one for VGA and one for DVI?! It seems so :(

    Doesn't work...

    Written by MS from Forestville

Doesn't work, and can't seem to find the latest (May '09) firmware update. My previous MacBook Pro adapters worked great to VGA, S-video, and composite video. With the new PowerBook Pros with Mini DisplayPort there is no longer an analog output from the video card, and this adapter does NOT do the trick. I give up!

Screen blinking intermittently even after firmware update

    Written by CK from DURHAM

    May 3, 2009

I have a Samsung 2253bw monitor, and I was having the same problem others have described. Every two minutes or so, the screen blanks for about 3 seconds and then comes back on. I wrote down the timing once, the interval can be less than a minute and up to at least 10 minutes. I was psyched when I saw the firmware update for this exact problem, but not psyched when it was not fixed afterwards; there is no improvement. Also, I was generally annoyed to have to pay $30 to output to ANY device, since when this machine came out there was no device on the market that had a mini DP input -- not that it comes with a mini DP cable anyway.
