It works - for those who can't get it to work read below

Written by SH from Lake Forest

    Mar 4, 2009

I read all the negative reviews on here before buying and still made the purchase anyway to try it for myself. Don't forget everyone - most people who write reviews on the Internet are complaining about something. The majority of purchases that work never get written about because it is as expected. So always take "reviews" with a grain of salt.

So anyway, I hooked this "Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter" up to my MacBook Pro (2.53GHz model) and to my 30" Apple screen. YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING YOUR GRAPHICS IN PERFORMANCE MODE to not get any color or tearing issues. You might also need a fresh reboot to make it reset as well.

    Steps:
    1) Click on your battery or charging icon in the upper right hand part of your screen
    2) Click on "Energy Saver Preferences"
    3) Ensure that the "Higher performance" button is selected when connected to the adapter (you can switch it back when portability is needed)
    4) Then exit

    Now...

    1) Go Apple>System Preferences> and click on "Displays" in the Hardware section
    2) You can play around with the settings in here to get the resolutions, colors and displays set-ups however you want.

**Important note - make sure your laptop is using the battery charger when connected to the adapter for all of the above to work consistently.

Hope this helps - worked for me.

    Was quite skeptical

Was very nervous because of all the bad reviews for an overpriced adaptor, but I needed one to power my 3008WFP, but it works absolutely perfectly with my 2.4GHZ aluminum macbook. Have not seen a single glitch and I am very particular about my displays. Gaming even is OK too (World of Goo and whatnot)

I bought the 27" iMac last week, and I wanted to use my 30" Cinema Display in dual-setup mode. After reading the reviews here, I was hesitant about buying this adapter, but this was my only option. So, I went ahead and bought it.

I plugged in the 30" DVI and USB cable to the adapter, and boom, it worked immediately. I did not experience any issues whatsoever.

The only negative thing I can say, is the price. $100? Seriously Apple? At least provide a discount for all people who bought your Cinema Displays.

Apple has upgraded the firmware and improved the adapter.

    Written by SJ from Clinton

    Aug 31, 2009

I purchased one of these adapters a few months ago and had nothing but problems with it. Recent reviews on this forum had improved, so I called Apple and asked it the adapter had been upgraded. After some discussion it became clear that the firmware had, in fact, been upgraded. The current version of the firmware is 1.02 and it works great!

Since the firmware couldn't be upgraded electronically by e-mail, Apple replaced my adapter at no cost. The new adapter has solved all of the previous problems.

I got this for my 42 in PHILIPS LCD 1080p. I was very disappointed at first as it did not work, but after reading some of the reviews on here I realized I had to plug in in the USB to supply power to the dual-link (I know Duh!). Now, it not only works but the picture is crystal clear!

hence my review title, Awesome =]

    works fine for me!

Written by AA from Abu dhabi

I have upgraded my monitor to Apple 30" cinema and used it with my old system for about 3 months. Then I decided to upgrade my system to the latest 15" macbook por with 2.8Ghz.

I freaked when I knew later that this was the only way to connect those two and it basically sucked based on the reviews. But I bought it anway.

I should say that everything is working fine for a week now. There is no issues what so ever. I played some movies on it and all worked fine. I also used it for photo editing and didn't notice anything yet. It may be because everything I have is brand new (the monitor, the laptop, the osx, and the converter) or mabye because I got lucky. Mabye, I have not noticed anything as of yet. So, I'm going to keep using the system and update this my comment if anything comes up. But until then, this converter works fine.

Finally works with Gateway w.firmware 1.02

    Written by SM from Pickering

    Sep 2, 2009

Finally got one after hearing on the US Apple site that someone tried it on their Gateway 3000 with success. I can confirm that it does in fact works though there is no way to tell what firmware version is on without going into System Profiler->Graphic/Displays and scrolling down to the XHD3000 settings. Unfortunately you cannot do this at the Apple Store so had take a leap of faith that the unit I purchased was new stock.

Also heard on the US Apple site/forums that the firmware cannot be updated remotely/on your Mac via software update.

I was skeptical after reading all of the problem reports but went ahead and purchased an adapter to connect my new mini (nVidia graphics chip) to a Dell 3007 30" display. It worked perfectly and has continued to do so for a week. Initially I did have to manually change my display resolution from the default up to the true monitor resolution in system settings but after that I've had no problems on Leopard or Snow Leopard.

    Very Nice Product!

I heard so many bad things about this product. I even went to apple store to find out more information on it, but they had no idea what I was talking about, not very knowledgeable at all. But I took a chance and bought this adapter anyways. I am using it with my brand new Mac Mini, which I just bought today, with 4 gb of RAM and 256mb graphic card. As soon as I plugged my 30" apple cinema to mac mini, it started working. I have been using it all day and haven't had any problems at all. So far I am very satisfied with this product. Great Buy!!

I read the reviews for this item, but recently purchased this adapter anyway (call it true faith in Apple) and it works great with my new 30" display and Macbook Pro. No problems, plugged it in and away we go.

I am getting the proper resolution, and I love the new real estate that I have on my desktop. I did check and I have the new Firmware version 1.02, so I don't know if this is better than previous ones people might have been buying but I'm happy.

    FIX FOR 15" MBP

    Written by GD from Arvada

    Feb 1, 2009

If you change the graphic card settings in system preferences under energy saver to better performance from better battery life, we found the flicker to disappear. This changes the graphic settings from the 9400 card to the 9600 card. Thanks

Not an Apple authorized fix, just a customer trying to make the community happier by offering this suggestion to a problem.

    The key is v1.02

Written by PM from UNION MILLS

    Sep 26, 2009

Like many, I found that my newly purchased 15" MBP no longer worked with my 30" Apple Cinema Display, even though I thought I purchased the correct adapter.

After receiving the "correct" adapter, I worried after reading so many bad reviews. But I plugged mine in, selected the resolution, and bingo: it worked, first time.

I checked the adapter firmware version and it is, indeed, v1.02. As a previous poster has already stated, it seems that this is the key to the success (or failure) of the adapter fixing the problem with the new unibody Macs. At least for me!

I just receive it and it works at full resolution with my 30 in Apple Cinema Display with both my new Mac Mini and new Macbook Pro. I thought there may be a flicker problem with the MBP because I saw flickers when I first plugged it in but they went away after the computer came on.

    It works!

    Written by DD from VEENDAM

    Nov 18, 2009

With some apprehension I ordered this adapter for connecting my recently acquired Mac mini (2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive, double-layer SuperDrive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, Mac OS X Snow Leopard) to my 30" Apple Cinema display.

It worked immediately, which is essential because the Mac mini is in fact my spare computer for getting on should my main computer, an early 2008 Mac Pro, break down.

Normally, the Cinema screen is connected to my Mac Pro (early 2008 model, now running under Snow Leopard), and the Mac mini is connected as a target disk via FireWire800 for cloning the Mac Pro hard disk to the Mac Mini hard disk.

Bought the unit in when the new mac mini came out. Was version 1.01 firmware,
Had the usual problems. Took it to the Apple store they exchanged it for
a dual link 1.02. Everything was great, works great on MM and MBP.
It had a rough start but Apple fixed it.
    Great product, great company.

    Don't Believe the Hype

    Written by WH from Annapolis

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 17" to replace my older 15" MacBook Pro. I have a Dell High Color 30 inch UltraSharp Widescreen Digital Flat Panel - Model 3007WFP (about a year old).

The older 15" connected straight through DVI and worked flawlessly everyday. I was worried about all the negative reviews here on the MiniDisplay Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter but didn't have much choice but the buy it and see what happened.

What happened? Nothing - I plugged it in and it works - flawlessly. I've been using this for 3 days now and haven't seen a single flicker, snow, static, nada.

My guess is that for people reporting problems with the new 17" MacBook Pro - they may not have the graphics set to Higher Performance under the Energy Saver Preferences.

I may not be out of the woods yet as I've only been using this for 3 days - but I don't see any reason to anticipate a problem at this point.

So... $99 is awfully steep for a simple cable - but it does the job: 5 stars (just to up the average here!)

I'm using the dual link DVI adapter with a 15" Macbook Pro and its working flawlessly. All I had to do was make sure that power saving was not on for graphics and was able to set up a sweet dual monitor setup. Now my mac is my secondary screen with just a little bit of tweaking in the system preferences.

Using it on a HP LP3065 monitor.
