    New firmware fixes the problem!

Written by EF from New York

    Jun 21, 2009

i had first gen of this adaptor and was also plagued by pixel noise and streaking. (I have a 2009 mac mini.) There is a new version of the adaptor with a firmware update (1.02) that fixes the problem! Apple techs in the stores do NOT know about this, you have to insist, but you will get a free replacement. AFAIK, there is no way to check firmware version from the box, you have to plug it in and look in System Profiler.

    Flickers all over

It's such a shame that the 30" display is from Apple, the 15" BMP is from Apple, and the display port to dual-link DVI adapter is from apple, yet they don't seem to work at all.

    Was quite skeptical

Written by ML from Foster City

Was very nervous because of all the bad reviews for an overpriced adaptor, but I needed one to power my 3008WFP, but it works absolutely perfectly with my 2.4GHZ aluminum macbook. Have not seen a single glitch and I am very particular about my displays. Gaming even is OK too (World of Goo and whatnot)

A bit on the inferior side

    Written by JF from Madison

    Jun 12, 2009

I have 2 setups with unibody MacBook Pro and 30" Apple monitor. I'm on the phone with Apple right now switching out the cable for the 2nd time. Works fine for a couple of months and then, launch up to a non-working monitor. By process of elimination, we've deduced it is the cable that is faulty. Going on my 3rd cable now. Kinda blows!

Ditto for me - Brand new 13" MBP with a brand new Dell 30 monitor

    Written by GH from Nepean

    Jun 10, 2009

I get the random fuzziness - thing is I have typically 20 or more windows open and they scrunch up into the 13" inch screen each and every time I "fix" the monitor. Not exactly the productivity solution I was looking for I'm afraid.

Adjusting the resolution seems to help if you go to a really low setting (1280 x 800 or lower) however I still have to unscrunch all my previously nicely arranged windows...

Identical problem occurs on a Samsung 27" monitor as well so I know it is in Apple's domain.

    Apple: Fix This!!!!

Works great, but must have OS X 10.6

    Written by BR from Orlando

    Jun 7, 2009

I thought this device was going to be a disaster based upon the reviews I've read but it seemed like the only option so I gave it a shot. I hooked it up to my 17" Unibody MacBook Pro and my 30" Apple Cinema Display and it works great. It says right on the box that you need OS X 10.6 or greater for it to work right, so you should update your system with the latest updates before hooking the adapter up. A lot of the reviews here were before 10.6 even came out so it appears that Apple fixed the bugs on that release.

    Only complaint: it's to expensive...

APPLE please fix this defective product- it's an embarrassment to Apple!

    Written by DL from Lexington

    May 29, 2009

I bought two of these (one for home and one for the office). The office unit drives a Apple 30" cinema display. The home unit drive a 30" Dell monitor. The computer in both cases is a new, current-generation (as of May 2009) 17" MacBook Pro.

Like everyone in the world, I have experienced the same unacceptable problems. On the Apple: all black or dark-colored areas of the screen have rapidly changing horizontal lines of noise. Changing graphics preferences from normal to high performance does not fix the problem. Sleeping and waking the computer does not fix the problem. Changing or replugging the mini DVI or its USB cable does not fix the problem. Giving up on Apple and getting a PC would probably fix the problem.

On the Dell, the same problems exist plus the interlace problem in which every other line is shifted, making it impossible to even read text.

I even swapped the home and office units and I get the same results as detailed above. Apple-- it's an embarrassment to the company that you continue to sell this product (and at $100 a pop!) and have not acknowledged the problem officially. Please issue a fix or replacement program-- your loyal customers deserve better.

    REALLY BAD flicker

Written by ND from Los Angeles

    May 25, 2009

There is a terrible flicker on black backgrounds (multiple people have commented on this). If you keep the monitor with only light colors, it won't make you wonder why you spent $1500 on a 30 inch cinema display. I use this product because no alternative exists. It is far below Apple's standards of product excellence, and I am not sure why they allow it to continue to live.

Tsk, tsk, Apple. Bring this product up to your normally excellent standards!

    Abysmal design at its worst

Written by RZ from Roslyn Heights

    May 22, 2009

Hooked up my computer to my 30" Dell display. The display works well on every other computer with a standard DVI port. I've tested this adapter on a MacBook, a MacBook Pro, and a Mac mini—all suffer from the same issue.

With this new mini DisplayPort scam, it works only 90% of the time. Sure that sounds like it's pretty high, but we're not talking about an arithmetic exam; imagine life-support systems that only worked 90% of the time: it might as well not work at all!

The adapter offers flaky performance, has been exchanged many times and no alleviation of the issue. Image gets distorted at random times, often when I'm doing something important.

The adapter is bigger than my Mac laptop's charger; pathetic design. As I write this review, the image decided to distort again.

Since is there no alternative product we are stuck with this piece of ____. Don't buy it unless you have to: you only need this if you have a 30" monitor that says you need dual-link.

    Works Great No Problems!

    Written by GC from Seattle

    May 21, 2009

After reading all the reviews on here I was almost thinking of not getting it and not buying a 30inch monitor due to all the problems people were claiming. Well I wanted to come in here and say I am not having any problems at all! It is working great with my 30inch monitor been using it for hours no flicker nothing! I have my resolution maxed out as well! I am wondering if people are not setting their resolution correctly or something... Or maybe their cable is bad? Anyways I am having no problems have been using for several hours on boot camp windows XP and also Mac os X leopard! I think the adaptor is a bit pricey but worth the money! So at least try this adapter our before reading everyone elses reviews you can always take it back if it doesn't work for you!

it's the only way for me to attach my macair to 30inch LCD monitor (Samsung 305T), but it does not work solid at all. Every couple of hours or so image gets bad and I have take it out and plug it in again. Hopefully it will be fixed or 3 part cable will become available on the market.

Unfortunately I have to chime in and complain.

Written by SL from Saint James

    May 19, 2009

I'm using this with a Samsung SyncMaster 305T. Some days I have to unplug and plugin this adapter to reset things once or twice a day. Other days though it's Every 10 minutes to the point I'm about to throw it in the garbage. The screen goes "blurry"... it's kind of hard to explain how it looks, but it's definitely unusable in that state.

I'm hanging on till the day that Apple may be able to solve this issue with a software and/or firmware upgrade. PLEASE!!!

Don't buy this counting on reliability.

    Flicker

Written by BW from Walnut Creek

    May 18, 2009

New 17" Macbook Pro and 4 year old 30" Cinema Display. I have my display set to "Higher performance" in the Energy Saver preference pane.

When displaying large areas of black on the Cinema Display there is clearly flickering horizontal lines. I once tried unplugging and replugging in the connector and the flickering was a bit less. But I do plug the adapter in virtually every day since I commute with the laptop. Generally speaking it will flicker when displaying black areas.

I will probably try to return it for another one to see if it varies.

I can live with it if there is no fix as the flicker is only there in black areas.

Tried this with a Dell 3007 monitor. No luck. It worked for 4 hours, then the picture changed to look like an old TV - lots of snow. Waiting for Apple to get this product working correctly. Hope it is soon!

A real pain... And no update from Apple after month of having this issue. And I'm not alone.. Hundreds of similar post with the problem

Solid product. I found solution to problems others have mentioned.

    Written by LC from Newcastle

    May 15, 2009

Using this with my unibody macbook. The key to having this product work flawlessly is a high quality DVI cable. I've using this with a Dell 3007 and a Dell 3008. Initially I had problems others have mentioned with noise, snow, picture distortion etc. then i switched to a high quality gold plated DVI cable and it's working flawlessly on both 30 inch displays.

The Mini DisplayPort IMHO is a disaster!
Received two new MacBook Pro's a couple of weeks ago. First time one was used we had problems with Dual-link DVI display
Second unit developed a fault with its Mini DisplayPort to VGA connector (no blue displayed - very embarrassing during a client presentation!)
Apple need to deal with this

    Worst Apple Product Ever

    Written by SJ from Clinton

    May 14, 2009

I've had two of these so far...I tried them both with a 30" Apple display and a 30" Dell display driven from three different computers - a 24" iMac, a 13" Unibody MacBook, and a 15" Unibody MacBook. In every case the end result produced either a flickering display or a display image that had no depth (i.e. it looked shallow and out of phase).

To begin with, it's disappointing that Apple forces you to buy this for their new line of MacBooks and iMacs. But to produce a product this lacking in quality, it's ridiculous.

I'm so disappointed with this product, that I've just downgraded to a 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro so that I can run my 30" display without problems.

Apple needs to fix this or design a new product! I'm not buying a Unibody MacBook Pro again until you do.
