Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
$100???
Written by LL
Jan 26, 2009
You're joking me? $100 for an adapter for a perfectly good working and relevant 30" ACD monitor??!
Not to mention i cant use the firewire on the back of the ACD. and it barely works most of the time which is just the kicker.
I mean, its not that hard to create something that looks simple and elegant, but put some craftsmanship and quality into it really!
You have access to a multitude of Apple products in your factory, do a bit more grindstone testing before we pay the burden of failed products that dont get the quality assurance customers that are willing to pay for apples premium.
Good luck next time.
(dont get me wrong im not here to bash Apple at all, I'm just reluctant with all these quiet changes and no realization that customers are offered standards and are now being kicked high to adapt or get nothing)10 of 12 people found this useful

Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Mostly works
Written by AS from Champaign
Jan 26, 2009
I was glad that it has a USB pass-through because I really didn't know how I was going to handle even one less USB port on the laptop. Still I need a hub because the 30" Applemonitor only has 2 ports.
As for the quality of the device, it works most of the time. Every couple of hours it will blink a blank screen for a fraction of a second. I can deal with that.
I really just want a 30" version that uses the display port natively and has more USB ports. But I'll have to wait and see if Apple makes one.9 of 15 people found this useful

Doesn't work with the Apple 30" Cinema Display HD either
Written by KB from Los Angeles
Jan 26, 2009
I have an Apple 30" Cinema Display. I waited patiently for Apple to release this product, hoping the delay meant they were ironing out last-minute issues.
They didn't. When I connect the monitor either of the two 15" unibody MacBook Pro's in my household, green and purple noise flickers across the screen where dark colors are displayed. For example top and bottom when showing widescreen formatted movies. Or left and right when displaying 3:4 formatted videos.
I hope I just got a lemon. I am going to the local Apple store tomorrow to demonstrate that either the adapter is broken, or the mini display port on both my MacBook Pro's.29 of 30 people found this useful

Really Apple?
Written by ND from Lakewood
Jan 25, 2009
Being a web developer and graphic artist I use a ton of Apple products and for the most part I really love all of them. However, this adapter is the exception. First off, $100? Are you kidding me? The price of this adapter is one thing, unacceptable. I don't appreciate having to pay an extra $100 to hook up my MBP when the old one had a DVI connector built right into it. You could have at least given me 1 adapter for free with the laptop. And then there is the performance issue, always reconnecting my screen because it just shuts off or randomly displays static.
This is very disappointing apple. Normally I hold you in such high regards, but this adapter is only one thing, that's a P.O.S.26 of 27 people found this useful

Extremely disappointed with Apple
Written by SL from Urbandale
Jan 25, 2009
I bought a new 15" MBP about 3 weeks ago as a replacement for my aging MS box. I'm a software developer by trade so a majority of my work is done at a desk using a Samsung 305T 30" monitor (2560x1600).
Unfortunately, I didn't do quite enough research on the new MBP models - I figured that it would support dual-link DVI out of the box.
I was surprised and shocked to learn I had to spend another $99 to plug in my existing monitor. After reading the reviews, I was hesitant to even bother (I think this is currently at 2/5 stars on the Apple store). I went ahead and purchased it out of sheer necessity, hoping I'd have better "luck" than other reviewers. I have NOT.
I experience at least 3-4 instances each day where the monitor will suddenly go out of sync. Its a simple matter of unplugging and plugging the mini-dvi adapter back in, but it is very annoying.
Additionally, there's a noticeable flicker - especially areas that have gradient color fills.
I'm absolutely disgusted with this product given the price. It were $20, I'd have more understanding. But $100? C'mon, Apple. Fix this. And offer us free replacements ASAP.44 of 46 people found this useful

Colored streaks over dark areas with 30" cinema display
Written by JM from Los Angeles
Jan 24, 2009
I have two problems with my Macbook Pro, this adapter, and a 30-inch Cinema Display:
1. Very visible colored streaks over dark areas of the screen, especially black areas. This problems varies in intensity, but it's always present. I connected a coworker's MBP to my display and saw exactly the same symptoms.
2. Jumpy mouse cursor, at others have reported.
I suspect both problems are MBP issues rather than a problem with the adapter, but in any case, as this adapter is the only way to hook a late-2008 MBP to a 30" ACD, buyers beware. I am using this system for technical work, so for me it's a merely big annoyance, but if I were doing creative work, it would be totally unacceptable.
Apple needs to acknowledge the problem!

Fuzzy video sometimes
Written by PG from MILPITAS

Does not work reliably. Getting fuzzy video, I have to disconnect and reconnect the adapter. My old macbook pro (with a DVI connector - so this adapter is not used), works perfectly everytime. Very disappointing.

Periodically the display goes awry and I have to reconnect
Written by WP from Snohomish
Jan 22, 2009
I am one of the many users who are experiencing what appears to be an interleaving issue of the DVI channels, from time to time the picture shifts and the image is unusable. I have to disconnect the adapter then reconnect it. I advise holding off purchase of this until Apple is able to resolve the problem.

Works as promised
Written by HM from Mountain View
Jan 22, 2009
I admit it, I was worried. I waited a long time to buy an Air that would drive my 30" Cinema Display. I bought my new 'puter knowing that Apple was promising to deliver an adapter. So I was a despondent when I saw the price and read all the negative reviews. However, I'm very, very happy to say- it worked perfectly the first time. No weird artifacts, scan lines, etc. It was a bit expensive, but I'm a happy camper. Thanks Apple!

Very Dissappointed
Written by SH from Birmingham

Cmon Apple...you have got to provide support for 3rd party 30" displays, not just your own. Product is great idea if it worked. No success with my Gateway XHD3000 and MBP(2.8ghz)

Fuzz at sporadic times
Written by MS from San Rafael
Jan 20, 2009
I read the complaints in the other posts, and hoped that it wouldn't happen to me. I finally received my adapter today, and was glad to be able to hook up my 30" Cinema display to my MacBook Pro. Worked great for a few hours, then the entire screen turned to snowy fuzz. Then flickered back to normal... good for a few, then back to snowy fuzz.
Now I'm just waiting to see if this is a long-term issue.21 of 22 people found this useful

Wait till revision 2.0. This product is defective.25 of 25 people found this useful

i tried two different adapters on five (!) different 30" apple cinema displays.
it did not work AT ALL! the results were mostly no external monitor found, but also system freezes occurred and the main notebook display went crazy (only a part of the upper left screen was displayed). very low quality product - WE ARE DEMANDING A RECALL!

Fuzz of Death and flickering
Written by JD from Eagan
Jan 19, 2009
As is this product is broken. For me when used with a Dell 30 I get random flickering from time to time and at least once a day the famous "Fuzz of Death". The only solution at that point is to disconnect the mini-dvi and reconnect. I was not happy to wait 2 months for this box, and I am not happy that it does not work. Stay away until Apple fixes it.

Epic fail
Written by LC from Columbia

This product does not work. I returned it, and the replacement is just as bad.
I'm using it with a new MPB unibody 15" 2.8 GHz in clamshell mode running discrete graphics. I get all the fuzzing and de-syncing reported here, and a new unit did not solve the problem. This is with a Dell 30" display.
The same Dell display and Belkin TruAV cable worked just fine for 3 years with my old MBP (15", first-generation Intel, early 2006). No problems at all.31 of 35 people found this useful

Am I luck ? It works flawlessly
Written by RM from London

I'm using the new PB 15" in non energy saver graphics mode, a 30" Apple Cinema Display and the new mini display port DL adapter. I'm powering the DL adapter from a powered USB hub. Works flawlessly. Sleep/Awakes fine, no flicker, no schumtz. Stays synced for the 8-10 hours I use my monitor every day.
My only complaint was having to wait since October for it. That was unacceptable on Apple's part I will not make that mistake again.4 of 32 people found this useful

I'm using this cable for connecting to matrox triplehead digital.Works fine, only when computer going to sleep resolution get sometimes corrupt. Disconnecting the cables and connect again solves the problem most of the time.
When it works it's great, but it looks like the os got some bugs with this adapter.
