Plug & Play, Works like a Charm

Just received my Dual-Link adapter today. Plugged it into my 30" Apple Cinema Display. Works perfect. Nice to once again have the massive screen real estate.

    so far so good

Using this to connect to my Apple 30" from the latest model MacBook. No issues so far. In the mix is a hub w/ 2 hard drive enclosures.

Cable is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE considering what it is.

    Frequent screen issues

    Written by MU from Vancouver

    Jan 9, 2009

I finally received my adapter last week. I use a 30' monitor at work and wouldn't live without it, so my new MacBook Pro has been in a drawer until yesterday (purchased the computer in October). I have purchased all 3 adapters for various purposes, but the Mini DisplayPort Dual DVI adapter is a great disappointment. On my Samsung 30', the screen flickers periodically or goes completely out of sync and this is incredibly annoying. I have tried a number of solutions as suggested in various on-line forums all to no avail. The only way to temporarily resolve the problem is to disconnect the adapter cable. If you regularly use a 30' monitor then I would delay purchasing a new MAC notebook computer until this problem is rectified.

    Flickers and shuts off

    Written by KS from Anchorage

    Jan 9, 2009

I've got one of the brand new unibody MacBook Pros and also just purchased a 30" Cinema display, seemed like a great idea to me. Then I realized that I needed the $99 adapter, ok, well drat, whatever as long as it works. Got my adapter in the mail two days ago. So far I don't have all the artifacts that people are talking about, but if I shut the lid on my MBP I can't get it to wake up for more than about 3 sec at a time then it flickers and goes back into sleep mode. The only way so far I've found is to restart my machine (in those 3 sec its awake, gotta be fast) then it'll work ok for a while. I haven't used it long enough to see the artifacts or lines yet.

    They must have known

This thing only works part of the time. When its good its good, but it goes bad many times a day requiring either sleep display, disconnect cable, restart etc.. to get it to work again. Snow, garbled screen whatever you want to call it.. How could this have possibly gotten through QA?

    Disaster.

    Written by BB from Telluride

    Jan 8, 2009

I am very disappointed. $99 and two months of waiting later, I got a product that doesn't work to spec. My Samsung 30" display (which conforms to ALL the specifications Apple laid out on its product literature for the MacBook) goes out of sync every few minutes. Unplugging it and plugging it back in gives me a few more minutes. This is not a useful product for me. Considering that I purchased the MacBook for the sole reason that it featured Dual Link DVI output, I am feeling swindled.

    Extremely Disappointed

Written by TG from Merritt Island

    Jan 8, 2009

Just bought a new MBP and also a 30" Gateway Monitor to use with it. Right after I bought the MBP, I purchased this adapter and apple said it would ship in 5-7 days. After waiting a few weeks I checked online and then found out I'd have to wait 2 months to receive. It gets better. Now after I finally received the adapter, it simply won't work with the Gateway 30" monitor, the monitor is only seeing it as a plain DVI and I can only get 1900X1200 res. SO frustrated. If anyone has a solution please post.

    Frequent problems

    Written by BK from Brattleboro

    Jan 8, 2009

Several times per day, my display that is plugged in to this adaptor will suddenly become unusable due to varying patterns of interference showing on the screen. The only way to fix it is to unplug the adaptor and plug it in again.

As there is no other way to plug in a 30" display to a unibody MacBook Pro, and there is no 30" display currently available with a native Mini DisplayPort interface, I have to suffer through this. I wish I had kept my old MacBook Pro, as it's DVI interface was able to drive my display without problems. I advise anyone considering upgrading to a recent MacBook Pro to NOT do so until Apple has fixed this problem.

    Sync fix

Written by JS from Coral Springs

    Jan 7, 2009

I experienced the out of sync issues about 3-4x a day. What I've found works every time is going in to display preferences and changing the resolution down to 1280x800 and then back to 2560x1600. It seems to reinitialize the screen that way and fix it. Since that works it is probably a software issue and should be corrected in a software update. I'm hooked up with an aluminum Macbook to a Dell 3007wfp-hc.

    works so far

    Written by ML from Berkeley

    Jan 7, 2009

I was nervous getting this for my MacBook Air based on the experience of others, but mine seems to be working well so far with a 30" Cinema Display.

I had been wondering about the purpose of the USB connector on the adapter (I figured it could either 1) simply be used to pass the USB connection from the display to the computer, 2) be required to provide power to the adapter, or 3) somehow be required to control the adapter -- the requirement for OS X 10.5.6 seems odd for a display adapter). Based on my initial tests, it seems like the USB connector on the adapter is required to be attached to the laptop (perhaps indirectly via a secondary hub) in order for it to work (simply plugging the USB connector into a powered USB port is not sufficient), suggesting that the USB connector provides more than just power.

    Poor performance

    Written by NJ from Ferndale

    Jan 6, 2009

The adapter works, but not anywhere near satisfactorily. "glitches" in the display are seen all the time, especially in black patches of the screen.

Sometimes after going to sleep, the monitor will ghost the display three different times.

You have to unplug and plug the monitor back in several times a day.

My 30" cinema display is sad and my workflow is interrupted constantly.

Shame on you Apple. Do you care about us? Or just those people buying your new LED displays?

    Annoying

Written by AS from SAINT LOUIS

    Jan 6, 2009

Arrived today. With my Dell 3008WFP it only supports the 640x480 resolution. Took it to the Apple store where it was plugged into a Apple 30'' Cinema display. With the Apple display it supports all resolutions up to 2560x1600. Whether this is sloppy engineering or Apple protectionism remains speculation.

dual link dvi cable not recognized by Gateway

    Written by DC from Herndon

    Jan 5, 2009

Bought a brand new aluminum macbook because it supported 30" displays. Checked at the Apple store to make sure my Gateway 30" was supported - no problem. After buying the computer, I was told that it would be a couple months to wait for the dual link dvi adapter. The worst part was still coming. It arrived the day after Christmas - the gateway doesn't know it exists - thinks its a regular DVI. So I'm stuck with a new macbook that can't accomplish the tasks for which it was purchased, a high res monitor that thinks it's low res, and a $99 cable that doesn't work. So much for my first experience with Apple...

Works with new MacBook Pro (Sort of)

Written by KP from San Diego

    Jan 5, 2009

I just got this today and hooked it up to my Dell 30" 3007WFP-HC monitor. When my MacBook Pro (2.4GHz 2GB RAM) is in better battery life mode it has a terribly flicker issue, but when in higher performance mode it works fine with a flicker maybe once every 30 minutes that I almost never notice. I figure the lower end graphics card accounts for the issue (it might not have the ability to drive at full resolution).

The adapter's USB port is hooked up to the one further away from the mini display port. I have only powered USB hubs plugged into the adapter.

So far I'm happy with this adapter and I do recommend it for MacBook Pro users.

    Stupid adapter blows buttt

    Written by AC from joliet

    Jan 5, 2009

I had the flicker too, I had my resolution set to the highest setting because I forked out the extra $ and bought the 2.8 ghz and maxed ram. But I had to lower my resolution to make it not flicker. And it blows because it is not as crisp as the highest setting but it is a fix for now till I decide to get on the phone with apple (UGH!). So hope this helps.

    Jitters on the letters

    Written by KD from 京都市上京区

    Jan 5, 2009

This is a new product. I am not surprised that the bugs are not worked out. But I am disappointed that it does not work properly. I had no problems with my one year old macbook pro and the old dual link with my Dell 30 inch monitor. So why change what works? But apple did and I have the newest macbook pro. I waited a month to get this adaptor. And from the get go this product performs poorly. What happens is the letters all over your screen, from the top menus to the words in your screen seem to jitter or double up on top of each other. Letters become unreadable. And there is no predicting this. The first time I hooked up it went badly. I restarted and it worked. Now it seems to happen randomly. It does not matter which setting I use for the graphics card in the energy saver. Both go badly.
A restart seems to fix it for a while. But at some point the problems rear their ugly head and you cannot read anything on your computer screen. You restart and hope you did not loose your train of thought at work.
Do not buy this if you expect it to perform as it should. It does not. Use your older machine with a dual link port for performance and wait for Apple to make it right.

    Very Happy So Far

    Written by SB from Belleville

    Jan 3, 2009

I have been very happy so far with my adaptor. I connected my 2.8Ghz MBP to my 30" Apple Cinema Display, and it just worked. I connected the USB pass-through to one of my MBP's USB ports, and now the USB hub ports on the back of the display work as well.

I have not experienced the flicker others have described. The adaptor to date has been exactly what it clams to be, and I am very pleased.

    Ridiculous product...

    Written by MB from Bend

I'm using this cable with a Samsung 30" monitor, and 2-3x per day, the monitor loses sync; this never happened with my older MBP and the same monitor (using dual-DVI). The cable is WAY too expensive and just doesn't work properly. Apple should be ashamed. Does anyone know how I can get this remedied?
