Works Great with my MBP and 30" Cinema Display

The adapter works fine my early 2010 15" MBP and my 30" Apple Cinema Display. The monitor powers down into sleep mode when it should, and wakes up quickly. The USB and firewire connectivity via the adapter and monitor work fine as well.

Works great with firmware v 1.03

Just purchased the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.

Make sure you have the version with the 1.03 firmware.

Follow these steps to determine the firmware version on your Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter:

    1. Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect a working display to your Mac.

    2. Open System Profiler by choosing About this Mac from the the Apple () menu in the upper-left of your Desktop. Click More Info...

    3. Find the adapter firmware version in the Graphics/Displays section under Hardware.

You can also search the Apple Support for Article: TS3232

"If you experience these issues and your adapter firmware version is 1.01 or 1.02, you can exchange your adapter for one with firmware version 1.03."

Sure it works but instead of plugging directly into the computer now I need two adapters plus it takes up additional USB port. A major hassle not to mention that it's expensive!

Cable was hassle free (for me at least)

I've never written a review but felt that this is such a hotly debated item it deserved some current input. I purchased the item new on July 27th from the 5th Avenue apple store and received the cable with firmware version 1.03 installed on it. I connected my 2008 Macbook Aluminum (version 5,1) to my newly acquired 30" mid-2007 apple cinema display and have not had any problems, it worked perfectly right out of the box.

I mention all the technical details because maybe the problem is a combination of the a) firmware version of the cable b) computer and c) production date and type of monitor being incompatible. I can confirm that at least this combination works without problems.

Either way, I'm really happy with the purchase as it works just like a cable should, does its job without any hassle. Only problem is the price, but if you are purchasing a 30" apple cinema display (a professional dual-link DVI monitor), I think it is understood that you may need to spend a little more to support it given that it is a specialty item and there is likely not a very large market for this product.

Returned my old Adapter with 1.02 firmware for a new one with 1.03 at local Apple Store (no charge) and my digital noise problem is a thing of the past. If you have one with firmware below 1.03 take it back and get a new one.

I've been using it for over a year with a macmini and older 30" cinema display. Worked first time, every time with no problems. I was worried by the negative reviews, but I had no trouble.

Some monitors don't require the dual link, so the regular dvi adapter that comes with the macmini works for them.

Unacceptable and Apple Support is Unable to Provide Solution

I purchased a Makpro with two graphics cards supporting a total of six monitors and four of these adapters for a trading application. Every now and then a monitor will go blank at random and when that happens all the monitors fail to blue screens and when they reinitialize, the contents of all screens are scrambled. Support has asked a lot of questions but has not provided any solutions and now is not responding to my emails. I will have to return the computer and adapters and go back to the dreaded PC's (which have other issues but not this one). Too bad, otherwise, the computer is quite good. I have 8 Macs total so I am not new to them.

Adapter is unreliable ... lots of snow

I have a Del U3011 display that I use at home and connect my 2009 Unibody via the display port to the display. The cheap DVI Display adapter would not let me get a resolution greater than 1680x1050 and so I sprung the $100 for the Dual-Link DVI adapter.

It is a very poor quality device as I generally have to change resolutions to get the "snow" to disappear. When it is working its fine but its definitely not worth the $100. The display will also intermittently cut out (blank) for up to 20 seconds and then start working again. I know its not the monitor as I also use it for a Windows box and the Dell display works flawlessly with that system.

I'm a big Apple fan but on this device they get a major thumbs down.

For $100, you'd expect a reliable piece of electronics. These adapters have done nothing but break and act completely unreliably.

    Works for Me

I've had absolutely no problems with this adapter. I'm driving a 30" Apple Cinema Display with an early 2010 Mac Mini with the 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor. Some have said that the adapter needs to be driven with its own power supply, but I'm not using one. Some have said that the adapter needs to have recent firmware. Mine came with firmware version 1.03, which is relatively recent (I bought the adapter in early 2010), so this might be the key as to why it works for me but not for others.

It doesn't work, however, with my Thinkpad X220 laptop with a Sandy Bridge dual core i7 processor with integrated Intel graphics. With the laptop, I get the flickering that others have described. I had to use a non-Apple DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort adapter, so the problem may be with that adapter, although this is very unlikely. I'm not taking points off for this because Apple clearly states that its adapter is for use with Apple computers only.

Worked perfectly with my MBA 2010 over MiniDisplay. I've been using this for a week and so far none of the flickering problem (yet!) with my Apple 30" monitor.

Like other say, maybe it's the new firmware which solves all problem. So make sure you get the latest firmware (I believe mine was 2011-January update).

Like others I was leary about buying this device, given all the bad reviews. But decided to take a chance and glad I did so far. It was easy to install and setup. I did see it flicker my screen to white and back again, but this only occurred once. I do have firmware 1.03.

I agonised over buying this because of all the negative reports but really had no choice to try to get my new Dell U2711 display to work at its best resolution, 2560 x 1440. Much to my relief, when I connected up to my MacBook Pro 17" this evening, it works perfectly!!!!!

I have three of these and am planning to buy a fourth one today for my research office. They are attached to my 30 in HP LP3065 monitors at different offices and I use them with my MacBook Pro machine without a problem:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
I wonder if the issues others are having are due to using them with an Apple Monitor or bad video outputs? I use the HP monitors since they have three HDMI inputs built in so they display the desktop information most of the time, then switch to the laptop when I need it.

Mini Display to Dual Link DVI adapter is really bad

It troubles me greatly to think that a 2007 Macbook is better than a 2011 simply for it's easy ability to plug into a Dell 27" display. The Apple Adapter requires all sorts of tricks to get to work. Apple should recall this product as it is just wrong. I want a refund (Not Fit For Purpose)

This adapter works fine with my 17" Macbook Pro. Note that the adapter draws power over the USB connector, so that must be plugged in even if this is used with a non-dual-link display.

Works well with Apple iPad 10W USB Power Adapter

    • Written by

20 of 21 people found this useful

TL;DR: If you want to use this, you really need to use the Apple iPad 10W USB Power Adapter to power it.

This is an update to an earlier review.

This thing (evidently) requires a lot of power. Fairly recent Macbooks shuld be able to power it, though generally only if you aren't using the other USB connectors and, in particular, if you don't plug in an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad (particularly an iPad). I've tried using an external powered hub, the AC adapter that comes with an iPhone, and the adapter that comes with the iPad. The 10W iPad charger is the only thing that results in no connection problems or sparkles. With the 10W connector, it's absolutlely solid. Clearly, they should have inlcluded it and told people not to try it without it. The way the USB connectors on a Macbook work, you'll get various results not only depending on what else you plug in, but the order in which you plug them in.

Apple would have saved themselves a world of hurt if they'd just included the 10W connector.
