    Gives static/snow when waking from sleep mode

    I decided to buy this adapter due to the fact that they updated its firmware to 1.03. Turns out it didn't fix anything. It still gives a static/snow distortion to the external display when waking up your computer from sleep mode.

    Works for 30" Samsung Syncmaster

    I have been using the $99 dual-link adapter for about 8 hours, and all is well. The price is rather painful, but as long as it works, I won't whine too much.

    I wish I didn't have to contact my local Apple store to figure out that I needed this product. It would have been nice for this info to be more apparent for us large-display users.

    After making the connection, I rebooted my system. Strangely, it took a few minutes to boot my new Mini Mac. For the three previous days I had been using the new Mini (tolerating the fuzzy/jaggy screen image), booting had been swift. So the long boot-time had me fearing the new connection wasn't going to work. Big sigh of relief when it did!

    To reiterate what others have posted here: This review is for the special DUAL (meaning two connections) link adapter. In my case, it takes the DVI and USB connections off my Syncmaster display and converts them into thunderbolt and USB connections for the Mac Mini.

    It works GREAT on Dell 3007FWP 2560x1600

    For those having issues with duel-link DVI, look no further than your DVI cable and make sure it is the duel-link DVI cable which is different from the standard DVI cable sold at most stores. If you are using a standard DVI cable, you will only get a single DVI channel with half the resolution. I am using this adapter on an Alienware X17+ R3 3D laptop hooked into an old Dell 3007FWP DVI port (its the only one on this model) and the image is smooth and clear with no observable artifacts. Took me a while to figure out that the previous mini-DP to DVI adapter I tried was only a single link DVI port giving 1280x800 resolution. The Apple adapter works like a charm when used as intended and is preferable to Dell's adapter which requries an aditiional adapter to convert the mini-DP to standard DP..

    Snow on screen when waking up, sometimes

    This product works fine 99.9% of the time with a new Mac Mini/Lion and a Dell U2711 monitor running at 2560x1440.

    The only problem is that when the Mac Mini I am using wakes up from sleep mode, sometimes I get a lot of colored video "snow" on the screen.

    I can remove this snow by power-cycling the monitor. (I am not certain the problem is due to the cable - it could also be the Mac Mini itself or the Dell U2711 monitor at 2560x1440 resolution.)

    I am using firmware version 1.03 of the cable.

    If someone has suggestions, or even a location for support for this, that would be helpful.

    I agonised over buying this because of all the negative reports but really had no choice to try to get my new Dell U2711 display to work at its best resolution, 2560 x 1440. Much to my relief, when I connected up to my MacBook Pro 17" this evening, it works perfectly!!!!!

    I had them all

    First one had firmware 1.01. It was horrible. Red-green-blue stripes flashed on black background sporadically, sometimes the image was broken. Replaced it with the new one with fw 1.02 installed.
    The second one was slightly better. Image did not broke anymore, but flickering and color stripes were there, not to mention "waves" on solid background. Switched it to the one with 1.03 firmware.
    Third one is good. No image distortion, no "waves", everything's perfect.

    After almost two years of production it finally became a quality product. Five stars from now on. Just make sure it's 1.03.

    Tested on 2008 MacBook Pro Unibody and Cinema HD 30".

    Flickering and noise with 30" Apple Cinema Display

    Like many other users, I too am experiencing consistent flickering and bands of video noise on any portion of the monitor that is being rendered as black when I use this cable. Now that I purchased a 2010 i7 MBP, I HAVE to use this cable and it's driving me crazy! My old 2007 MBP with a straight DVI connector worked great with this monitor. This is totally unacceptable for an apple product connecting two other apple products together!

    Sometimes works

    Expensive piece of hardware, but is amazingly flaky. I mean it works most of the time, but is subject to random problems is the form of messed up displays (get used to unplugging and plugging back in). It's a digital to digital converter but it produces artifacts that you would expect from a analog to digital converter.

    Seriously, can this not be done better?

    My worst Apple product ever

    The 30" Cinema Display shows static, is less sharp that the direct DVI used to
    be, and from time to time doesn't detect the proper resolution
    (messing up all window sizes and positions from sleep) -- for
    which the only solution is to go back to sleep, unplug it, re-plug
    and wake the MBP again. Even giving it its independent power through
    an USB hub doesn't help.

    I find it really disappointing that Apple won't find a solution for this,
    even after so many months.

    Terrible

    I am getting all of the same issues as the other commenters. My Dell 3007WFP which works fine with my old Macbook Pro is as good as unusable with my new MacBook Pro thanks to this adapter. Every 30 minutes or so the display gets these lines and the white static is nearly continual and especially noticeable when watching a video or editing text on a black background. None of the tricks suggested (such as using a USB hub) make a bit of difference and the Apple Store staff refuse to acknowledge the problem to the extent that I am considering hauling my 30 inch monitor into the store and showing them.

    Complete rubbish!!! Does not work well!

    I would have had more enjoyment sitting on my roof and folding 20 ten euro notes into paper airplanes and watching them go...

    I run this between my 30" HD Apple Display and my 17" MacBook Pro. 9/10 times it doesnt work and when it does more often than not the display becomes un-viewable. The screen flashes on & off all the time. Very very very unhappy with this product.. DO NOT BUY. Opps screen just did it again...

    On 3rd one in 4 months

    Running a 2009 MacBook Pro connected to a Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC 30-inch WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor. The monitor works perfectly when I use it with my older MacBook pros and older connectors.

    Using the 2009 MBP with Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, my external monitor does the following:

    * Flashes garbled white horizontal lines randomly.
    * When the computer wakes up after a long sleep, the external display shows 'double vision' with some vibration.
    * While the computer is awake the external display sometimes just goes black (while still powered up).
    * When the image being displayed is full black, there are random flickering white pixels distributed over the black.

    For each of the above issues, my remedy is to unplug the DVI Adabpter cable from the MacBook Pro and then plug it in again. It resets the external display to 'normal'.

    I've had Apple send me two new cables and the problem persists.

    Works Perpectly!!

    I bought the 27" iMac last week, and I wanted to use my 30" Cinema Display in dual-setup mode. After reading the reviews here, I was hesitant about buying this adapter, but this was my only option. So, I went ahead and bought it.

    I plugged in the 30" DVI and USB cable to the adapter, and boom, it worked immediately. I did not experience any issues whatsoever.

    The only negative thing I can say, is the price. $100? Seriously Apple? At least provide a discount for all people who bought your Cinema Displays.

    UNSTABLE BIS!!!!!

    I am using a 30'' screen SAMSUNG SyncMaster 305T plus plugged with this Famous cable to a iMac 24'' and I am having all the problems described in this post:
    -Snow sometimes
    -Some kind of blurriness
    And I need to unplug/replug the cable several times a day!!!!
    This is extremely annoying and also my first deception from apple!!!

    I really wonder if they take those problems in consideration and try to solve it!!!????

    If any one get news about that (like a firmware update coming or in preparation), please let me know...

    Now if you want to know if I recommend it... I am obliged to say that I do since we are obliged (as far as I know... If I wrong let me know!) to use this cable to plug a 30'' screen...

    Works for me, but has some display issues

    I was also scared off by the reviews, but since this was really the only option available to connect my 24" iMac to my 30" Cinema Display (which I already owned and previously used with a PowerMac G5), I decided to bite the bullet and order it.

    Luckily, it works, and for the most part, works well. The image quality is very good and I love having two big high quality monitors for apps like Aperture, Photoshop and Final Cut Express.

    However, I'm a tad disappointed that there are flickering horizontal pixels lines visible in the dark areas. The lines are usually red, but occasionally other colors and seem to appear toward the bottom of the screen most frequently. If I set the background to pure black, they are more visible throughout, but under normal use, it's not noticeable enough for me to return it...especially since I have no other option.

    If I can find a way to fix this, I'd give it 4 or 5 stars, but as is, it's just an average 3 for me.

    New MBP and adapter, still poor quality over dark screen areas

    We have three older 30" Cinema Displays in our office, three new unibody MBPs (Sept 2009, latest 10.6 updates), and two new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapters (firmware 1.02).

    With bright or strongly textured backgrounds, no problems at all, everything looks good, monitor stays perfectly in sync. When large black areas are on the screen and the adapters are warmed up, you start to see random red streaks appearing across the dark areas, reminiscent of the kinds of problems seen with bad analog VGA cables and older LCD displays. The easiest way to see it is to set your background to the "Lightning" image in the stock "Black & White" backgrounds. Let everything warm up for an hour or two and look closely at the dark areas at the bottom of the screen.

    With different combinations of hardware, we see the exact same problem, so it really seems to be a design issue. None of our older G4 and Intel macs with DVI ports have any problems with these monitors. Under guidance from the phone support folks, we've reset the PROM on the MBPs, cleared plist files, switched between performance and power-save graphics modes, etc, with no improvement except for brief periods between reboots when the adapters cool down.

    It gets quite annoying after a while if you are using applications with dark backgrounds. The apple staff try to be helpful, but more people need to call them and complain so that more engineering reports are filed; this is the only way to get this remedied. If you're one of the people that think that the adapters work great, please do the above background test and call in if you see noise.

    Apple has a great opportunity to show their high-end users some love here.

    Wait for them to fix the bugs before buying

    If you want to use a new MBP with a 30 inch cinema display, you have to buy one of these. But there are a lot of bugs still to be fixed, such as:

    - scrambled video after wake from sleep
    - stuttering playback in Front Row
    - jumpy cursor movement
    - momentary video blackouts

    My advice: don't but this (or a new MBP) until the problems are fixed. Check the forums for the latest reports...

    The device is also cumbersome and ugly, doesn't have a firewire-thru port and is rather expensive. That might be OK .... if it worked properly.

    They must have known

    This thing only works part of the time. When its good its good, but it goes bad many times a day requiring either sleep display, disconnect cable, restart etc.. to get it to work again. Snow, garbled screen whatever you want to call it.. How could this have possibly gotten through QA?

    Do not buy it if you have an Apple Cinema Display 30 ¨

    Does not work with an Apple Cinema Display 30¨ and a macbook air summer 2012. When time passes, appear blinking dotted lines, and are unbearable to behold. It is unfortunate that Apple did not check their Apple products before selling something.

    Wish there was an alternative

    This allows me to use my 30" Apple Cinema Display with my new Macbook Pro, however it is not a product i feel is up to Apple's standards. occasionally, my screen will develop digital noise across it, as well as the USB connections on the back of the monitor can be flaky as well. i actually have to restart my machine to fix these issues which is a real pain. You would think that since this is just a piece of hardware that there wouldn't be so many issues. Been using it for over a year now and really hate it, but there is no other alternative that i know of besides buying one of Apple's newest monitors, which don't go up to 30"
