    Flaky at best

I was so excited to get my new 17" MacBook Pro until I realized that this "Pro" product didn't work with my 30" Cinema Display anymore without me dropping another $100. I then get the adaptor to find that it is really flaky, my screen flickers few times an hour and it just seems like the whole thing was an afterthought at best. Really, really disappointed that Apple did this to their core audience who spends the most money on their products.

Found solution for Mac Pro 4,1

I just bought this adapter to run two 30" Apple displays on a 2009 Mac Pro with GT120 video. At first I could get nothing from the mini display port using this adapter. But from reading the other comments regarding usb power, I tried connecting both the usb connector from the adapter and the usb connector from the display directly to the back of the Mac Pro (rather than connecting the display usb cable to the adapter case). That brought both displays to life in full resolution. Only been running a few minutes but seems good. Agree this is a very disappointing product, and as a very big purchaser going all the way back to Lisa (1983) I expect better of Apple.

Not the quality I'm used to from Apple.

I'm a Mac fanboy and I promote Apple and it's quality products wherever I go and also write software for the Mac. Unfortunately I have to write a bad review for this one.

My setup is Macbook 5,1 Unibody with a 30" Dell 3008WFP Monitor.
mini-DVI to DualLink DVI cable with firmware 1.02.

At first I thought it was my screen that was defective so I got an exchange from dell, since then I've exchanged this cable for the third time and still the quality is not what I am used to from Apple.

The new cable works fine at maximum resolution for a couple of days but then I start seeing pixelation ( like snow on a old TV set without cable) in the bottom half of the screen soon followed by the whole screen becoming green and flashing back to normal colours at a rapid 60Hz. My guess is that this adaptor cable looses sync after a while.

If I disconnect the screen itself from the adaptor and reconnect it, nothing changes the adaptor still flickers the screen image, but if I disconnect the adaptor from the mac book and reconnect it, the adaptor is good to go for a couple of hours before it starts behaving badly again.

I've tested my screen on another computer and also tested the screen with a normal mini-DVI to DVI Cable, both situations worked flawlessly.

Basically said, this adaptor is not stable at all.

I would have had more enjoyment sitting on my roof and folding 20 ten euro notes into paper airplanes and watching them go...

I run this between my 30" HD Apple Display and my 17" MacBook Pro. 9/10 times it doesnt work and when it does more often than not the display becomes un-viewable. The screen flashes on & off all the time. Very very very unhappy with this product.. DO NOT BUY. Opps screen just did it again...

Running a 2009 MacBook Pro connected to a Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC 30-inch WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor. The monitor works perfectly when I use it with my older MacBook pros and older connectors.

Using the 2009 MBP with Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, my external monitor does the following:

    * Flashes garbled white horizontal lines randomly.
    * When the computer wakes up after a long sleep, the external display shows 'double vision' with some vibration.
    * While the computer is awake the external display sometimes just goes black (while still powered up).
    * When the image being displayed is full black, there are random flickering white pixels distributed over the black.

For each of the above issues, my remedy is to unplug the DVI Adabpter cable from the MacBook Pro and then plug it in again. It resets the external display to 'normal'.

I've had Apple send me two new cables and the problem persists.

Purchased a brand new macbook pro - 30" cinema display this adapter and it just plain stinks!

I had the cinema display for the past 2 years running but using this adapter and the latest macbook pro 2.8ghz laptop I notice tons of feedback in the display.

So bad that after 2 days I went back to my older 2.2ghz macbook pro.

    Apple please fix!

Apple has upgraded the firmware and improved the adapter.

I purchased one of these adapters a few months ago and had nothing but problems with it. Recent reviews on this forum had improved, so I called Apple and asked it the adapter had been upgraded. After some discussion it became clear that the firmware had, in fact, been upgraded. The current version of the firmware is 1.02 and it works great!

Since the firmware couldn't be upgraded electronically by e-mail, Apple replaced my adapter at no cost. The new adapter has solved all of the previous problems.

Colored streaks over dark areas with 30" cinema display

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I have two problems with my Macbook Pro, this adapter, and a 30-inch Cinema Display:

    1. Very visible colored streaks over dark areas of the screen, especially black areas. This problems varies in intensity, but it's always present. I connected a coworker's MBP to my display and saw exactly the same symptoms.

    2. Jumpy mouse cursor, at others have reported.

I suspect both problems are MBP issues rather than a problem with the adapter, but in any case, as this adapter is the only way to hook a late-2008 MBP to a 30" ACD, buyers beware. I am using this system for technical work, so for me it's a merely big annoyance, but if I were doing creative work, it would be totally unacceptable.

Apple needs to acknowledge the problem!

Cmon Apple...you have got to provide support for 3rd party 30" displays, not just your own. Product is great idea if it worked. No success with my Gateway XHD3000 and MBP(2.8ghz)

    Fuzz at sporadic times

I read the complaints in the other posts, and hoped that it wouldn't happen to me. I finally received my adapter today, and was glad to be able to hook up my 30" Cinema display to my MacBook Pro. Worked great for a few hours, then the entire screen turned to snowy fuzz. Then flickered back to normal... good for a few, then back to snowy fuzz.

Now I'm just waiting to see if this is a long-term issue.

    Fuzz of Death and flickering

As is this product is broken. For me when used with a Dell 30 I get random flickering from time to time and at least once a day the famous "Fuzz of Death". The only solution at that point is to disconnect the mini-dvi and reconnect. I was not happy to wait 2 months for this box, and I am not happy that it does not work. Stay away until Apple fixes it.

    Flickers and shuts off

I've got one of the brand new unibody MacBook Pros and also just purchased a 30" Cinema display, seemed like a great idea to me. Then I realized that I needed the $99 adapter, ok, well drat, whatever as long as it works. Got my adapter in the mail two days ago. So far I don't have all the artifacts that people are talking about, but if I shut the lid on my MBP I can't get it to wake up for more than about 3 sec at a time then it flickers and goes back into sleep mode. The only way so far I've found is to restart my machine (in those 3 sec its awake, gotta be fast) then it'll work ok for a while. I haven't used it long enough to see the artifacts or lines yet.

I am very disappointed. $99 and two months of waiting later, I got a product that doesn't work to spec. My Samsung 30" display (which conforms to ALL the specifications Apple laid out on its product literature for the MacBook) goes out of sync every few minutes. Unplugging it and plugging it back in gives me a few more minutes. This is not a useful product for me. Considering that I purchased the MacBook for the sole reason that it featured Dual Link DVI output, I am feeling swindled.

    Poor performance

The adapter works, but not anywhere near satisfactorily. "glitches" in the display are seen all the time, especially in black patches of the screen.

Sometimes after going to sleep, the monitor will ghost the display three different times.

You have to unplug and plug the monitor back in several times a day.

My 30" cinema display is sad and my workflow is interrupted constantly.

Shame on you Apple. Do you care about us? Or just those people buying your new LED displays?

Works fine except when waking up

Works just fine with my MacBook Pro much of the time, but has periods when it flakes out: sometimes after waking up from sleep I get a bunch of static on my display (NEC PA271W). Power cycling the monitor clears things up, but it is annoying. Fortunately my monitor also has a DisplayPort input so I've switched to using a mini to regular DisplayPort adapter (also much smaller, cheaper, and doesn't need a USB port). If you've got no other option besides dual-link DVI then this adapter works OK, but I'd go with other options first if you can.

I use this to connect my 11" Air to a 27" WQHD non-Apple monitor (I had tried HDMI and regular DVI adapters and couldn't get full resolution). Most of the time, the D-L DVI adapter works fine and the picture looks great.

About 1/10 times if I wake up my monitor from sleep, it looks great for a second or two, but then overlays the entire displayed image with a weird static. You can still barely see the picture, but you wouldn't want to use it. To recover from this, I often have to unplug the adapter from my Air and try again, sometimes multiple times are required. Also, it uses up a USB port and the pass-through one it provides does not provide much power: a mouse works, but the USB->Ethernet adapter does NOT work, nor does the external superdrive.

Works well with high-power USB port

I've had this for a while and had the same trouble many people mention. It doesn't work at all without the USB connector. Moreover, it really wants a high power USB port such as found on macbooks. I think this is why so many people have varying success. If you plug it into a hub, you'll get anywhere from nothing to sparkles. The macbook USBs have higher power (as needed by iOS devices). If you use the AC USB adapter that comes with an iOS device, I think you'll have far better results.

Mini Displayport to Dual-Link DVI gives static

I have a 2010 model 17" MBP with a Dell 30" monitor and the adapter causes static on the screen when the MBP is woken up from sleep. The problem is fixed by unplugging the adapter from the MBP then re-plugging, sometimes 2-3 times. MBP works fine with other monitors; monitor works fine with other computers (without adapter). Clearly a problem with this product.
