Apple has upgraded the firmware and improved the adapter.

I purchased one of these adapters a few months ago and had nothing but problems with it. Recent reviews on this forum had improved, so I called Apple and asked it the adapter had been upgraded. After some discussion it became clear that the firmware had, in fact, been upgraded. The current version of the firmware is 1.02 and it works great!

Since the firmware couldn't be upgraded electronically by e-mail, Apple replaced my adapter at no cost. The new adapter has solved all of the previous problems.

    confirming flicker problem

Most people who buy this overpriced thing complain of similar problems - it flickers every now and again (completely randomly) for half a second to a second. I contacted mac support and they got me to delete two specific files (forget what they were now) but that did nothing anyway. I want to exchange it but from what I've read over the net I'm almost certain the replacement unit will ave the exact same problem! its completely ridiculous that this malfunctioning product is the only way to attach a high-res screen to the macs.

I've been using this adapter to connect to my 30" Cinema Display with my Macbook Air (model 2,1) 1.86GHz ever since I got the MBA (December 2008). It works fine.

The only problem is that there are too few USB ports (only 2) and anyway the MBA Superdrive can't use them! The firewire ports on the Cinema Display are redundant as the MBA has no firewire.

The adapter works exactly as advertised with my Gateway XHD3000. Unplugged mini DVI, plugged in mini Displayport and USB cables, plugged in Dual Link cable, and voila, glorious 2560x1600.

I was worried that it wouldn't work because of the low-ish reviews, but I had no problems.

    Poor product

Screen flickers for a second every now and then, especially shortly after wakeup. What really annoyed me was that Apple support claims not to know what I was talking about. That cost me another trip to the dealer to exchange the "faulty" device, bot knowing that it's a general issue with these things. This is the worst Apple product I've owned so far!

Screen flickers to black every now and then (every 30 min?). Pretty unacceptable for something as simple as an adapter.

I work for a large online social network company, and many of us (around 200 people) are using this adapter happily with Dell 30" monitors (two models). There are also people using it with NEC 24". We are using MacBooks and MacBook Pros from between 2007-2009.

In my experience (and my team's) the adapter works well in all in all scenarios. The main test is the hot-plug scenario, and this has never let me down. OSX seems to transition the windows reasonably well - they are often half off the screen when they are consolidated, but that is a minor gripe. The transition takes 5-10 seconds each way, understandably.

The inclusion of USB is nice, in that it makes for clean cabling on our desks.

Anyway, I see no reason to rate this unit lower than 5 stars. Good work to the under-praised guys who developed this product.

    Bad Apple...

MBP + 30 inch ACD. As a Mac user for over 20 years this is the worst Apple product I've used. The picture quality generally is okay but on black I get horizontal flickering, which is simply unacceptable. As someone else remarked, I wouldn't mind paying the $99 if it worked but this is way below Apple's usual standards. Shameful.

Failed to work on my 30' Apple Cinema Display HD

Flickering and stripes across the screen (most visible on black) using this adaptor. The thing is this is consistent with my early 2009 Mac mini as well as my new MacBook Pro (both energy saving and power graphics) but the monitor with my old PowerMac G5 with Nvidia 7800 GT does not have this problem at all.

I heard so many bad things about this product. I even went to apple store to find out more information on it, but they had no idea what I was talking about, not very knowledgeable at all. But I took a chance and bought this adapter anyways. I am using it with my brand new Mac Mini, which I just bought today, with 4 gb of RAM and 256mb graphic card. As soon as I plugged my 30" apple cinema to mac mini, it started working. I have been using it all day and haven't had any problems at all. So far I am very satisfied with this product. Great Buy!!

    Prepare to be frustrated

You could almost excuse the ridiculous size and cost of this adapter if it worked properly.

Using the Dual-Link DVI adapter with my 15" MacBook Pro and 30" Cinema Display is very inconsistent; while in-use the display will suddenly become distorted requiring that the USB and Mini DisplayPort cables be disconnected and re-connected. This problem is increasing in frequency over time.

The computer will wake from sleep about 50% of the time without having to perform the same disconnect/connect sequence.

In my opinion, the adapter is currently a terrible product - I'm (probably foolishly) optimistic that a firmware update will be released to resolve, or at least improve these problems.

For once, I am going to be in the minority here voicing concerns for what seems to be a flakey product. (Trust me, I've had the worst luck with hardware in the past) Let me say, I haven't had one single issue with it yet. I waited a few weeks before writing this review to make sure it was working properly.

I had just bought a used 30" ACD off an auction site for a steal of a price to use with my Late 2008 model Macbook Pro. I expected to just buy the minidisplay port adapter from Apple and all would be well...that is until I read the horrendous reviews on this site. I'm a web designer, so display, colors etc. would be at the utmost importance for me. I was really hesitant to even go further, but since my monitor purchase wasn't made in store, I had no choice but to forge ahead, I went ahead and bought this adapter in-store the week of the July 4th holiday.

It took me a while to figure out to get this to work in clamshell mode with the proper resolution (I defaulted to mirroring but that made no sense to me), but after that everything has worked flawlessly. If my laptop goes to sleep and I wake it up with a mouse, my display restores itself perfectly unlike what I've read in some of the previous reviews. Also, if your laptop is already turned off, all you need to do is plug in the adapter first, open the laptop lid and press the power button. Quickly close the lid and it should show up on your 30" display.

Perhaps I got lucky? FYI, I got the 1.02 firmware adapter so like someone recently mentioned, perhaps those work a little better. Not a 5 star review since the price is a tad on the high side. Good luck everyone.

    Flakey Performance with MacBook Air

Using this product with MacBook Air (Latest Model 2009) and an Apple 30' cinema display. Im experience problems with displaying images where you get bright colors on highlights and sometimes you even get colour fading from an image - noticeable if you scroll an image - ie the image starts out colour then scroll it down the 30' display it starts to go black and white.

Not impressed - will log fault with Apple.

I just received this adapter a few days ago and tested it out with my new apple 30" cinema display & slightly older 30" gateway xhd3000. Both Monitors hooked up with this adapter seem to work perfectly with my 15" unibody MacBookPro 2.53 w/ nvidia geforce 9600m GT running 10.5.7.

I ran the screens for around 5 hours, did some photoshop work, watched some hd videos and I didn't encounter any of the distortion problems that i've seen in the forums. I checked the adapter firmware in system profiler , & it says 1.02.
I was expecting something to go wrong, but so far so good, atleast for me.

The only things i don't like are the price, the wires with huge white boxes..Oh and it needs to be plugged into a usb port to run. Mines plugged into the lower usb port next to the mini display port.

anyhow hope it keeps on working. I'll be back if it doesn't.

    fried my Dell 3008

    • Written by from Los Angeles

My brand new Dell 3008 30inch screen started to display the reported distortion after I plugged a mouse in the monitor's USB port (first USB device I connected to the monitor). I had also just put my Macbook Pro 17"inch into clamshell mode (lid closed, working from Dell screen). Soon after the Dell monitor went from bad to worse, into the state it is now: waiting to be shipped back to Dell. It won't even display its own built-in menu any more. Something got fried in the monitor, and the coincidence would be too improbable if this wasn't related to Apple's adapter woes.

    Version 1.02 still has issues

    • Written by from PORTLAND

I've tried the latest version (1.02) with a new model MacBook Pro and it still has issues displaying dark backgrounds with the 30" Cinema display. It appears to be the same type of artifacts that result from a too-long DVI cable, but the use of a signal booster did not solve the issue.

It's likely that the circuitry in the adapter is not providing sufficient amplification to drive the higher-voltage DVI. Apple may need to resort to an external power supply instead of driving via USB port.

It's very disappointing to not have a solution to this, and that Apple was not able to properly QA and ship a product that works with their own laptops and monitors.
