    Flicker

New 17" Macbook Pro and 4 year old 30" Cinema Display. I have my display set to "Higher performance" in the Energy Saver preference pane.

When displaying large areas of black on the Cinema Display there is clearly flickering horizontal lines. I once tried unplugging and replugging in the connector and the flickering was a bit less. But I do plug the adapter in virtually every day since I commute with the laptop. Generally speaking it will flicker when displaying black areas.

I will probably try to return it for another one to see if it varies.

I can live with it if there is no fix as the flicker is only there in black areas.

    It is broken

I have the same issue often reported here of flicker and noise coming through the adapter. For those who think it works, I suggest you test with a black background (or play a movie) as the high contrast makes the noise impossible to miss.

It maybe, as one reviewer suggests, that people complaining merely have a defective adapter and it should be returned. Well, I did that and it still doesn't fly. Given the number of complaints here, I think it is pretty clear that the adapter is faulty. I tried two Apple Cinema displays with a new mac book pro, and I get the noise. My old macbook pro works fine. I am a huge supporter of Apple, but this product needs to be replaced.

    Flicker

I purchased the 2.8GHz MacBook Pro. I have a 30" Cinema Display at the office and the new 24" LED Cinema Display at home. I was disappointed that I had to order a $99 cable for the 30" display. Initially worked fine but develops an annoying flicker in the background. Usually not seen in an active window. This is an annoyance and significant disappointment considering the upfront costs.

I really hope this is a software problem with the NVidia chip and not a problem with this adapter... but the flickering is ridiculous! They say it's not compatible with non-Apple monitors and say that's the reason for many users' problems (complete nonsense...) but that doesn't explain the identical problems I have with my NEW Apple 30" that worked perfectly with my old MBP 17".

There had better be a fix soon because this is ridiculous.

    Mac Mini(2009) Problems w/Adapter

Just to chime in with the rest of the crowd, I'm also experiencing flickering issues with this adapter. I have a new Mac Mini w/Nvidia graphics that powers the 30" Cinema perfectly, no graininess or distortion, except for that irritating screen flickering every 15-40 minutes. I thought the Mini had issues, I'd never suspect it was the adapter until coming to this forum. Hope Apple fixes this problem soon considering that the adapter was 1/6th the price of the Mini.

    works fine but too expensive

Despite the endless series of negative reviews, I bought this to connect a Samsung 305T to my MacBook Pro 15" Early 2011, and it seems to be working just fine at 2560x1600 (not mirroring) for now. It is too expensive so I really can't give 5-stars.

Hope my words could help hesitant people make their decision to buy this adapter for non-Apple displays.

Causes snow on the monitor every time after waking up from sleep and the only solution is to turn off then on the monitor. For $100 I expected much much better quality which this product is far from.

So, we've got 3 of these in my office, connected to our Dell 2560x1440 monitors, everyone experiences sporadic connection issues. Just snow for me, but it's still really irritating, especially for a 99 dollar cable with an Apple logo on it!

    Expensive and Bulky

    • Written by from Saint Paul

15 of 16 people found this useful

For the price, this adapter should include a dual-link DVI cable. The adapter doesn't work properly unless you have the very latest version of the cable (with 1.03 firmware), so don't look for used cables on eBay. The adapter is bulky and requires the use of a USB port (though it does have a USB port on it). If you have a MacBook Air, and especially if you want to use an Air SuperDrive, you will have trouble connecting everything at once. This is because the SuperDrive will not work with USB hubs.

Sadly, this is the only option available for some people depending on their display. If possible, a Mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort connection (with adapter) is a better bet for hi-res work.

This adapter works fine with my 17" Macbook Pro. Note that the adapter draws power over the USB connector, so that must be plugged in even if this is used with a non-dual-link display.

    Weird behavior

So setup - Brand new Mac Mini, Brand new 30" LG W3000H, Brand new - Dual link mini display port adapter. Random flicker, pink noise on the screen, blurred blacks (blue flicker). Tried with different DVI cables, different power cables, different power sources (i.e., wall vs UPS), all with similar but different problems. Plug the screen into an old MBP with full size DVI, no problems at all.

So, I tried to plug the display port adapter into another 30" screen, 2yr old Samsung 305T. Looks great.

I have suspicions that some monitors will work, and that some won't after this. However, I am going to blame the adapter for being quirky. For a $99 piece of equipment, I would like to have seen better performance than this. Basically, my new monitor is useless with this display port adapter. I'm transitioning to a linux box with a dual link DVI graphics card in it. Sigh.

Worked fine with an HP LP3065 monitor, for a while. I was banging away at a document earlier this week and the screen went black. Thought I heard a very quiet 'pop' so I assumed it was the monitor. Not so. HP's trouble shooting revealed that it hadn't dropped dead. I connected the Mac to another monitor via another adapter. No problems there. Then I envisioned that call with Apple about this $99 adapter, then obviously the culprit. Is there another one you can try? Nope - this is the only $99 accessory that I have ever needed for connecting a computer to a peripheral device.

I bought another one from Amazon. If you have a dual-link DVI monitor, you really don't have much choice but to shell out for this thing. Plugged it in (after checking one more time to see if the old one had fixed itself) and sure enough the replacement solved the problem. I called Apple then, and at least they are willing to ship a replacement, to arrive in 2-5 days. I guess I'll have a spare.

Given the hassle I wish I'd sought an aftermarket mini-DVI compatible monitor (not that there are many of those). Apple really needs to examine its perspective on video ports. If the designers are going to demand an adapter, and Apple is going to charge a whopping premium for it, it should at least be a quality product.

this cable work on my NEC 30" 3090

just bought this cable plugin from my new mac mini to NEC 30" multsync 3090 monitor. It works so far without any problem.
    No flick
    No noise
    No problem after sleep.
The 2460x1600 res is very detail and line is very sharp and fine showing on my monitor.
Before I bought this cable, I had tried this cable with a apple cinema 30" in an apple store also no problem.
I think it does the job..

I don't like just it is too expensive but 30 " with 2460 res need this so I have no choice and I don't even know what else cheaper can replace this.

Also not many staff in apple store I have been know this cable well.
I heard someone can't get this cable work is because the firmware of this cable is not 1.03. Also no one in apple store can confirm to me the one I bought is 1.03 or not.

Luck I have my one work and I think my one is the latest firmware

I bought this cable less than six months ago and it now regularly flickers and stops responding, forcing me to disconnect and reconnect my 30" Dell monitor. This is immeasurably frustrating, because not only do i have to stop working, I also have to reposition all of my windows. Easily the worst apple experience I've ever had.

As I write this review, I've had to unplug and replug the adapter 3 (count 'em, 3! times). I am using an HP LP3065 display. I have all the same issues as everyone else on this thread. Apple should fix this adapter and replace all the ones that we bought.

I am a totally MAC fan. I love their stuff. It is always quality. This thing is awful. I depend on my monitor as I do a lot of photo work. I had an older macbook pro which had the DVI output. Ok, so I have buy a 100 adapter now, I am sort of ok with that. Then I find it takes up one of my USB ports as well. A little less happy, but give me a product that works. Now this... Two or three times a day I need to cycle this thing. Very poor. I really hope they fix this.

Interesting product. Using my 30"Cinema HD with the adapter I was getting "snow" in the dark areas of the screen.

I moved the Dual link adapter to my Wacom Cintiq 21" and it worked without a hitch. The adapter was harder to insert initially for the Cintiq but after attachment there were no problems.

I am using another adapter to connect to my Apple monitor but it only drives to the 1280x800 resolution. There is not another product that will allow me to get the high resolution on the 30" Cinema Display. I now have to decide if I should buy another $99 Dual-Link DVI and try it out or wait for a product to come out that will drive my monitor.
