    These work great

I've never submitted a review to this site, but in attempt to help someone interested in purchasing one of these, I thought it was worth doing. I don't know what all of the complaints are about. I've had this adapter for years, and depending on the situation, used it to power a myriad of external monitors. I've used it with two different 17" Powerbooks, and an 8-Core G5 - so that I can run two monitors at the same time. I've never a problem of any kind, and trust me, some Apple products drive me insane. This is one product that has always been trouble free.

    Irritating things !

I bought this expensive cable to have the access at the resolution of 2560x1440 on my new 27 inch screen with my MackBook Pro 2010 core i7.

And I'm very disappointed by the quality of this one.
I've several time by hour a black screen and some time after a sleep I've this strange color video noise.
The only way to reactivate my screen is to plug out the cable and replug in.
Sometimes I must do this operation 5 or 6 time to resolve the "black" screen.

I must work all the day with this problem it's very irritating!!!
So please update the firmware of the cable !

total failure, this adapter will cut off, have to be reset hundreds of times, and cause more stress than it could ever be worth. TOTAL RIP OFF.

The cable matters - works great!

This product works as advertised, however, you need to use a dual-link DVI cable, which is different than the single-link DVI cable you most likely have lying around. To tell the difference, a single-link DVI cable has 3 pins, a gap, and then another 3 pins whereas a dual link DVI cable has pins running all the way across with no gap.

I originally had a single-link DVI cable and was experiencing the horrible resolution issues others are talking about. Buying the right cable changed all that and now it works great!

As Advertised (except in mirror mode)

    Here's my configuration:

Late 2011 15" MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB memory connected to a Dell 3007WFP.

I now have 2560x1600 on my Dell 3007WFP! Mirror mode, however, only manages 1680x1050, so if you intend to use it this way, which I don't, you may be disappointed (or maybe I'm missing another setting somewhere).

Otherwise, works exactly as expected. Would give it 5 stars if not for the mirror mode shortcoming.

I have an original 30" Cinema display and Macbook Pro which I bought back in 2007. I just bought a new Macbook Pro (2.2 Ghz i7) and wanted to use my 30" display with it from the Mini Display Port. This Dual-Link DVI adapter worked first time out of the box running my Cinema at 2560x1600 resolution. I did plug the adapter's USB directly into the Macbook (didn't try running it from a USB hub, so don't know if that would be a problem for some users). Regardless, I have had no issues.

I had concerns about buying this because of all the bad reviews but went ahead anyway because I would have had to buy a new monitor. It worked perfectly for connecting a mac mini to a 30 inch Apple Cinema display with full 2560 x 1600 resolution. I found it awesome!

Despite negative reviews, this adapter works as described.

I was leery of buying this adapter because of all the problems others have reported, but I didn't want to wait for delivery from another manufacturer. The maximum resolution my new 2.7GHz i7 Mac Mini would deliver to my 30" Cinema Display was an intolerable 1280 x 800, and I was resigned to using the Mac Mini as a media server and driving the Cinema Display with my older MacBook Pro. But the adapter just works perfectly. I get the maximum 2560 x 1600 resolution, the monitor wakes up from sleep with no difficulty, and there's no flickering, snow, or any other artifacts or problems that others have reported. The competitor's price was $30 less (plus shipping), but it was worth it to me to be able to drive over to the Apple Store and pick one up today.

Using mid-2011 13 inch MacBook Air to drive a 30 inch Dell display. 3007WFPHC at 2600 x 1600. After reading the comments, I connected the USB plug to my iPad charger, so that it can draw as much power as it might need. I am not sure if connecting to the macbook air usb will also work.

Firmware Version 1.03 does not eliminate "flickering snow" problem
    • Written by CL from Cedar City
    • Dec 2, 2011

I tried this adapter with a NEC PA271W monitor. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro (2011 model, 8GB RAM) with OSX 10.6.8. Initially, I was experiencing the "flickering snow" problem about 25% of the time when my computer woke from a sleeping state.

It was very frustrating to have to cycle the monitor off and back on or to unplug it from the computer and then reconnect it so often to clear up the display.

It was able to reduce the frequency of the problem by connecting a USB cable between the monitor's Upstream USB Port 1 and the USB port on the Adapter. But this did not eliminate the problem.

NEC tech support sent me a Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable (NEC Part Number PA-MDP-CABL, price $29.99). They also instructed me to connect an A/B USB cable between the monitor's Upstream USB Port 1 and the computer.

So far, this has fixed the problem.

This cable does support the Monitor's highest resolution, 2560 x 1440, 60 Hz.

I do not know how well this particular cable will work for non-NEC monitors. There is a latch on the end of the cable that locks into the DisplayPort on my NEC monitor. I do not know if the DisplayPort connections on monitors from other manufacturers have the same fitting.

Can't play rented iTunes content, and shows "snow" on blacks
    • Written by MJ from Hamilton

This adapter lets me connect my mid-2011 (Thunderbolt) MacBook Air to my old 30" Apple Cinema Display. It works for the most part, but it has significant flaws:

    1. Pure black areas show a little "snow" on the Cinema Display.

    2. The adapter doesn't seem to support HDCP, which means I can't rent a movie in iTunes and play it back on the 30" display. This is annoying given that I'm using an all-Apple setup, and renting iTunes content! (This does not seem to affect purchased iTunes video content, though -- just rented video content.)

Neither is a deal-breaker, but both are annoying.

    Problematic at best
    • Written by MG from Oakville

Even with the latest version 1.0.3 firmware this adapter is terrible. I've had issues using it with multiple monitors from my 2011 Macbook Pro 13" i7 2.7Ghz. Flicker, snow, image jumping. Apple support told me that I have to power my monitor off and back on for things to work properly after the monitor had gone off with energy saver settings. This works sometimes, but even after power cycling the monitor after a while the problems come back.

It's massively overpriced and doesn't work as advertised. Apple should really resolve this or pull it from the market and stop advertising that their portables are able to drive a 30" monitor, because with this being the only solution they offer to do so .. it's just not usable in a professional capacity.

New cable with Firmware 1.03 did the job!!!

Followed the advice of entry: Aug, 2011 from MK Atlanta. I "Screen grabbed" (Cmd + Shift + 4) and printed MK's entry, and information about my Mac's hardware, which showed that I had a old 1.02 firmware cable. Took all the printed information and old cable to Apple store and they exchanged it, no problem. We weren't able to test it as the store was packed and everyone was using the monitors and laptops etc. But as soon as I got home, connected the new cable no problems, no snow, no flickering....Halleluiah!!! Why can't they post this, or send us an update? My new Subaru has had some computer updates since I bought it in February..... I get a letter, take it in, update, end of story. (note: I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro)

Bad cable could be the issue. Not 100%

Noticing some of you have had flicker or other display issues with this adapter and I would like to add something that may or may not help.

I to have had flicker or snowing effect or even a thin vertical line on the screen when using the adapter, but found out after using other cables I had stored away, short and long ones, that finally one DVI cable actually worked well with no issues.

Just might be the case with you guys as well. It just might be a bad cable.

    Horrid

I've had this adapter for a few months now. As a long time Apple fan, this product is very dissapointing. I use this adapter on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro connected to a 30" ACD and it flickers like crazy on dark blacks. I primarily use the ACD for editing in Aperture... So I experience the flickering issue a LOT! I really expect better from an Apple product, especially when its a $100 cable connected to a $2000 display. I plan on trying several of the things I read on this forum tonight (such as using an iPad 10w adapter and checking the firmware), but even if they work this is a still a fail. Apple products should not need "fixes" they should just work.
