    DVI-I vs DVI-D

    The output is a DVI-D instead of DVI-I. So instead of carrying around one adapter I need two. This along with other issues makes me question the intentions of Apple's product line and feels like what happened in the 90's is happening again with Apple milking money out of users from the extra (or overpriced) hardware to buy. Interoperability is important.

    Stop Releasing New Display Plugs

    Over the years, I have accumulated no less than 4 different breeds of display adapters with 4 different attachment for apple laptops. Every time apple releases another machine, they change the adapter port, and I'm forced to buy another. On top of all that, they now charge $30 for the adapter instead of $20. I'm done paying $30 for a $5 piece of hardware that, frankly, apple should be shipping in the box with their machines. I'd recommend anyone considering buying one these should pick up the $5 alternative (google it).

    READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!

    This adapter will only fit DVI-D connections. It will NOT fit a DVI-I connections!!! This one simple fact ruined a presentation in front of hundreds of people for me. The old MacBook Pro was able to connect to DVI-I, but not this one. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you will be using a DVI-D connection. I'm still reeling about this...

    This adapter should have been included with the MacBook Pro, period. You would think that for $2400 they could at least throw in an adapter for their proprietary display port.

    Packaging totally misleading

    It's good to know that this supports only single-link DVI with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 or lower, which is _not_ written on the packaging, and not even on the description on the Apple Store. That's only once you've connected it between your Mac (e.g. a Mini 2011) and your monitor (e.g. a Samsung SA850) that you'll notice the max. resolution in the Displays Preferences, look for information on apple.com, and eventually find out the informative note hidden somewhere in the faqs.

    Frustrating. Works, but not as well as expected.

    I bought this device "just in case" I might need it. I never really used it, because I always had access to my desktop computer and never needed to use a separate display for my laptop. I got a new job where I'm on the road and working from a satellite office. Now, I figured, would be a good time to start using this device.

    The device hasn't completely stopped working, but it isn't very reliable. The screen image on the monitor frizzes up often. Think of an old school television antenna. The only solution is to jiggle and contort the adapter until a stable connection is made. Once again, think of an old school television antenna.

    So, I've owned the device for over a year, but the last month has been my first time using it regularly. I don't recommend that anyone buy this product. I've since ordered a similar device from a competitor. Hopefully the user experience is better.

    Does not fit the Apple DVI to VGA-adapter

    In intention to use my original Apple DVI to VGA adapter with my new MacBookPro I bought that adapter, so I can use my old Apple computer as well for presentations. The Mini-display to DVI does not fit the DVI to VGA adapter (as posted in other comments due to the different standards (DVI-I and -D)). Unfortunately this is not stated anywhere in the product description of both products. So You have to buy boths adapters (DVI and VGA) for using them with the Mini-display-port.

    Disappointed

    Wait until a third party offers an adapter. I was stuck at a major conference and had to switch to a PC because this adapter is a single DVI rather than a dual DVI. The house A/V company could have interfaced with the dual DVI, but not this single configuration adapter.

    This wouldn't have been an issue with my old Powerbook, but this new scheme is only compatible with 1/2 of the cables out there. Awful.

    The generic version is better than Apple brand

    I bought this with a Macbook back in late 2008. The generic versions of the adapter which you can buy for $10 are actually a lot better than the $29 brand name version from Apple. The generic versions have a DVI-I interface which passes through analog, in case you need VGA for a projector or something. The Apple version only passes through DVI-D, for no comprehensible reason.

    Bad product listing

    I am so disappointed. All I want to do is hookup my Macbook Pro to my TV so that I can play home movies, etc., which were edited and compressed on my computer. However, the listing of this Mini DisplayPort to DVI did not make clear that the cable was DVI-D rather than DVI-I. I'm not a pro at these things, but I'm not dumb. If a listing says "DVI-I" and one says "DVI-D", I can figure out that they are different and order the right ones. Thumbs down apple.com. >:(

    cuts out increasingly often

    I used it to connect my MacBook Pro to an extra display. At first it was fine, but then it started cutting out but could be temporarily fixed by unplugging and replugging it in to the port. Eventually, it got so bad that it would not come back on. I thought my Thunderbolt port was on the fritz, but I tried using a VGA adapter and everything was fine. (although I can't watch HD TV episodes on the external display.)

    A bad output format, and unqualified technical support

    I have recently purchased a apple 30" cinema display and replaced my 2 year old MacbBook Pro by a new one. As always, apple has once again changed (downgraded) the display output format on the MacBook Pro. The technician at the Apple Store sells me this adaptermMini DIV, but it doesn't allow me to use my screen at full resolution. After wasting a few hours trying to fix this problem, I call the Apple tech support. After making a few tests and going through the list of my products, they conclude that it must be a hardware problem with my computer. So I bring my laptop and screen to the AppleStore, the same one that had sold me the DVI adapter. Eventually, a friend told me that I need to purchase a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, 100$!

    The Apple techniciens that I dealt with are completely incompetent, they sold me the wrong product and didn't even know about the specs of their own product. Perhaps if Apple stopped changing their output formats every year, it would be possible to connect a brand new Apple computer to a brand new Apple display without having to order additional parts at extra cost...

    Read if you plan to connect to VGA via an adapter

    I bought this to connect to DVI and VGA sources. I realize for VGA I need an adapter, but what I didn't realize is the the vast majority of adapters for VGA-to-DVI are NOT compatible with this product. It blocks the DVI-I 4 pins around the bar, meaning you'd break any DVI-I adapter you tried to attach. If you get this and you need to connect to VGA, most existing adapters (such as those that come with video cards) WILL NOT WORK, and you will need to buy a DVI-D-only adapter.

    Complete Failure

    I was unable to get either of our 1 day old MacBooks to connect to any of the 4 monitors we have in our house. The Mac literally shows no monitor connected. Called Apple and they escalated to engineering after about 30 minutes of troubleshooting.

    Macbook MiniDP > DVI Samsung T260HD = FAIL
    Macbook MiniDP > VGA Samsung T260HD = FAIL

    The above was tried with each of the two Samsung T260HD monitors that I have.

    Macbook MiniDP > DVI Dell 2407WFP = FAIL
    Macbook MiniDP > VGA Dell 2407WFP = FAIL
    Macbook MiniDP > VGA Samsung 915n = FAIL

    Expecting a call from Apple on Tuesday with the feedback from the engineering folks.

    Doesn't work with a perfecty fine Samsung monitor

    I had read all the reviews on the Apple Store before buying this adapter. Turns out, it doesn't work with my SyncMaster 940bw, even with a brand new DVI-D cable...
    I have had it with Apple...Not only does this adapter is too expensive, but also it simply do not do the job.
    Thumbs down on this one.

    DVI-D not DVI-I..which is what I needed

    Read the reviews as you will notice a common trend. This product doesn't clearly state it is DVI-D and not DVI-I (which the older models used). Just wasted my money to find out it doesn't work on newer Macbook Pros

    I bought a MBPro with the intention to use it with my Optoma projector using a DVI-D connection. (I confirmed with Apple whether this would work, of course, long before I decided to purchase. And the answer was YES.) Well, this adapter DOES NOT work! I just wasted several hours trying to figure this out and sifting endlessly through forums to find a solution. A LOT of people have the same problem. It seems like Apple is stumped by this one!

    I'm a first time Mac user on his first day of usage (TODAY) who wants to convert to Mac out of his frustration with Microsoft products. What a disappointment! Apple, please give me a solution or give me a refund! NEGATIVE FIVE STARS!!!

    Not what it claims to be

    Won't work with DVI-I devices. If it is not a universal mini displayport to DVI adapter don't call it such. Educate the people in the store who hand this to me when I say "I need an adapter to hook this up to my DVI monitor". I've wasted an hour an a half on the train to buy it and now need to waste another hour and a half to return it. Huge waste of time and big disappointment.

    This is an Apple product and I am an Apple evangelist and have been for many years. Imagine my disappointment when something as simple as an adapter doesn't. What's the problem? That's even more disappointing - it doesn't make a secure connection between my Cintiq and the adapter. On any DVI female connection, there is a slot for the "blade" pin to go into; with two regular pins above and below it. On our Apple version, the holes above and below are simply too small to accept those pins.

    It just doesn't fit. From a company that engineers it's laptops from solid blocks of aluminum, I'd expect a little better. If I could give this zero stars, I would - a complete waste.

    Really? $30 for THIS?

    First of all, I dropped over $2000 on a new Mac Pro with a dual monitor GPU only find out that it doesn't have two DVI ports, but rather one DVI and one "Mini DisplayPort" which meant buying this adapter. So I spend another $30 bucks on this thing, and it works all right- takes a few extra seconds to turn the monitor on, but when I dual boot into windows, the monitor on this adapter drops resolution to 1600x1200 and sometimes doesn't even come on. I've updated all drivers and everything. JUST PUT TWO DVI PORTS ON YOUR GPUs!!!
