    No Analog signal

    Cannot use this with any analog adapter.

    I wanted to plug into my projector, didn't have an HDMI cable on hand so decided I could use my DVI to composite adapter along with this Thunderbolt to DVI.
    NO GO. This does not allow analog connectors. The move to phase out analog is probably to enforce DRM, Shame because I'm an artist creating my own content and I had to come up with a very hack solution to get MY content projected out of MY laptop.

    This adaptor is useless with your DVI to VGA or DVI to Composite or any other DVI-A connector.

    Very frustrating that the new MBPs only equipped with Thunderbolt and USB makes it very hard to get any signal in or out of it without the need to buy a whole bunch of new types of cables or interfaces.

    incompatible with Dell monitor

    Bought a highly reviewed Dell 23" monitor for use with my MacBook Air (mid 2012). The monitor has DVI input but is unable to communicate with my MacBook despite multiple attempts (with the Apple mini displayport to DVI adaptor) and no help from Dell or Apple. A waste of $300 plus the cost of the adaptor.

    First, I suggest you look elsewhere to find a Mini DP/Thunderbolt to HDMI cable rather than deal with this item. If you have to get this one here is my experience with it:

    Pros-
    Nice picture (when the cable works)

    Cons-
    **NO AUDIO
    **Price ($29.99 + cost of another cable if you don't have a DVI-D cable to connect)
    **Mini DP connection on cable is very fragile. This is the first cable I have ever had that had to be placed just right to ensure a clear signal. I have books stacked-up behind my iMac to keep the cable straight. Don't even think about bumping it while inserting or removing a USB or FireWire device (does anyone use firewire?)

    Apple, stop sapping my wallet with proprietary garbage that sounds great, kind of works, nobody supports or uses and get standardized equipment. My friend's sub $400 laptop with HDMI output looks the same as mine but his has audio and he got the cheapest cable we could find ($5 for 12ft). I spent $60 for the total cable setup and look like an idiot.

    Bad product

    Stopped working after a few months. Have to buy a new one..Just to use it for a few months again.

    I'm frustrated with apple recently. Things just don't work as they did before.

    DVI-I vs DVI-D

    The output is a DVI-D instead of DVI-I. So instead of carrying around one adapter I need two. This along with other issues makes me question the intentions of Apple's product line and feels like what happened in the 90's is happening again with Apple milking money out of users from the extra (or overpriced) hardware to buy. Interoperability is important.

    I bought this device "just in case" I might need it. I never really used it, because I always had access to my desktop computer and never needed to use a separate display for my laptop. I got a new job where I'm on the road and working from a satellite office. Now, I figured, would be a good time to start using this device.

    The device hasn't completely stopped working, but it isn't very reliable. The screen image on the monitor frizzes up often. Think of an old school television antenna. The only solution is to jiggle and contort the adapter until a stable connection is made. Once again, think of an old school television antenna.

    So, I've owned the device for over a year, but the last month has been my first time using it regularly. I don't recommend that anyone buy this product. I've since ordered a similar device from a competitor. Hopefully the user experience is better.

    cuts out increasingly often

    I used it to connect my MacBook Pro to an extra display. At first it was fine, but then it started cutting out but could be temporarily fixed by unplugging and replugging it in to the port. Eventually, it got so bad that it would not come back on. I thought my Thunderbolt port was on the fritz, but I tried using a VGA adapter and everything was fine. (although I can't watch HD TV episodes on the external display.)

    color static issues on monitor

    I was not able to make this work between my 13" first-gen unibody MacBook Pro (I think early 2009) and 23" Cinema Display (2008 model). The cinema display showed red color static/noise all the time (and I tried several common methods for trying to fix that). I suppose this is just the price of older hardware, but would have been nice if they would play nice together.

    It's good to know that this supports only single-link DVI with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 or lower, which is _not_ written on the packaging, and not even on the description on the Apple Store. That's only once you've connected it between your Mac (e.g. a Mini 2011) and your monitor (e.g. a Samsung SA850) that you'll notice the max. resolution in the Displays Preferences, look for information on apple.com, and eventually find out the informative note hidden somewhere in the faqs.

    Stopped working after update

    This product worked great for me for several months until I updated my macbook pro 17 inch to OSX 10.7, after the update this adaptor completely stopped working for me. I have tried several different televisions and suggestions found on Apple support site and other helpful sites, nothing worked.

    I've been using the small cable to link to my main eizo display and some times using it to connect to my projector. Just before my second cable failed to opearate. A really bad quality product, although an expensive one.

    I bought this to connect to my very high end HP monitor and it does not work. Makes the screen blow up and looks like an old VGA monitor. I would try one before you buy one.

    I bought one of these to connect my external monitor to my new Macbook Air. Got a blank screen on the external monitor, and the macbook did not recognize it at all. Confirmed that it was not working on my friends macbook. The one he bought elsewhere for $5 is still going strong after 6 months. This item is of very low build quality and the screws will not bolt into most standard DVI leads either.

    The generic version is better than Apple brand

    I bought this with a Macbook back in late 2008. The generic versions of the adapter which you can buy for $10 are actually a lot better than the $29 brand name version from Apple. The generic versions have a DVI-I interface which passes through analog, in case you need VGA for a projector or something. The Apple version only passes through DVI-D, for no comprehensible reason.

    I purchased this to connect my MacBook Pro to a projectior. It did not connect well to my DVI cable for the projector and did not work. I tried changing resoultions, I pushed it in and thought I had made connection. but still no go!.When I pulled it out I saw that the adaptor had bent the pins on my cable to the projector. I though it was new so being tight was the issue. NO I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE APPLE STORE. I have a BAD projector cable and my MacBook Pro still does not work. I AM VERY UNHAPPY AND DISAPPOINTED.

    Read the reviews as you will notice a common trend. This product doesn't clearly state it is DVI-D and not DVI-I (which the older models used). Just wasted my money to find out it doesn't work on newer Macbook Pros

    I have 3 Apple 24" LCD Monitors with DVI, I purchased a new Mac Pro with a single graphics card with a single DVI out and 2 Mini Port outputs. The Apple salesman assured me that if I purchased 2 of these it will work fine. After purchasing them I have now read that only 2 monitors will work unless I buy the much more expensive adapters. I would not be fuming so much had I known that I had to purchase 2x 100 € cables from the start instead of wasting my money on 2x 30 € cables as well. Part Apple's fault, part salesman's fault for not knowing specs properly......

    I have an ACER 24inch monitor (1920x1200) since 3 years, that works flawlessly in VGA and DVI with my PC (GeForce 8800, Radeon 4670, GeFcorce GTX 260) as well as with my old Mac
    - PowerBook 15" HD (DVI no adapter)
    - iMac 17inch Core2 Duo "education"
    - MacBook Black Core2 Duo
    - MacBook Pro 15inch 2008
    - MacBook Air original (mini-dvi to DVI adapter)
    but, it was just impossible to make it work with a MacBook Air 13" 2010,m with mini-displayport to DisplayPort adapter. NEVER!
    It just continue to work well with my other computers (PC, MacBook Pro 17inch, PowerBook G4!)

    It's just a terrible product!

    This adapter doesn't work with a wide variety of monitor models that all perform properly on other systems. There are years' worth of threads of problems in the discussion boards, and Apple is typically silent on any resolution of the issue. You're better off trying a cheap one than wasting $30 on this one.

    and I can't seem to make it to detect my Philips 202E2 20" monitor, why?

    I've been unplugging the normal DVI cable from the Philips to the MiniDisplay port and every time I did that, the monitor will display a message saying, "Please check cable connections". So, IMHO the normal DVI cable is working just fine.

    Is there any problem with my MiniDisplay to DVI port? I just bought them from the authorized Apple Computers dealer.

    I've been putting my mac to sleep, and waking it up many times but still, my mac can't detect the monitor.

    I'm so sad! :'(
