    No USB connector

    Written by SR from Tallahassee

    Nov 15, 2009

Why can't we get the connector cord with this?!! It just feels like a rip off.
I bought this dock for home and I use the USB connector at my office.

A bit cheap to leave out a connecting cable. Everyone needs one to leave with the dock.

should have been bundled with 3G

    Written by AS from Markham

    Jul 23, 2009

I was a former owner of the 2G iPhone and when I bought the 3G iPhone last year I was disappointed to see it's missing the mediocre dock. i had to pay 35 bucks to buy this since my 2G dock didn't work with this. however I was pleased that this dock worked with my 3G S. in terms of the dock it self, it's nothing special and no major points. so it's not a necessary accesory.

Great Dock but Sound Output is Poor

    Written by NJ from Mississauga

    Jul 9, 2009

Great Dock and keeps the iPhone in clear view at the bedside table. One can connect External Speakers and I tried this with Headphones. The sound quality had dropped quite a bit and the clarity was not there. Not sure if anyone else had a similar problem.

The second thing as every one has stated, @ $ 35.00 Apple should have at least given a USB Connecting Cable.

    Doesn't Work with iPhone Skins

Written by NP from Hot Springs

    Jun 3, 2009

This dock is fine for users who tote their iPhones around without a skin, but if you have any type of halfway decent iPhone skin on your iPhone, it will simply not work at all. In that case you will need the Apple Universal Dock for iPods and iPhones. That will allow you to connect your iPhone to your dock, skin and all. Other than that, if you have an iPhone 3G without a skin, than this dock will work fine for you. And as Apple says this won't work with the original iPhone. Another time you would need the Universal Dock.

    No A/V pass thru

Written by BN from Apple Valley

    Mar 2, 2009

Like many others...a little disappointed that the iPhone dock doesn't allow A/V pass-thru. Why would you not create the dock specifically designed for the iPhone to capitalize on all it's features??

    Sorry...this was a big miss.

    Great Product - Almost

    Written by RE from Portslade

    Dec 26, 2008

Dock looks great, nice seamless connection and with the exception of being white, (iPhone 3G is black/chrome), everything looks good.

Apart from the fact that it does not work with the AV cable so now I have to buy a Universal Dock, (I hate anything "Universal", why don't they call it, "Not designed to fit anything properly" - half arsed job if you ask me), which has 25% of the looks.

Do it properly if you're going top do anything; make the thing fully compatible, it's not that hard.

What's up Dock? Wheres the Cable Steve?

Written by RG from arizona city

    Dec 20, 2008

I really like the looks of this dock and the way my 3G sits in it. When I bought this I didn't realize I still had to use the cable that came with my iPhone.

I had planned on using this with my iMac in the house and using the cable that came with my iPhone in my car with it's built in AC port so I wouldn't have to take the cable from house to car every time.

I would think being a desk top accessory it would have a cable hard-wired into it, especially for $29, I feel kinda let down Steve that it looks as if I still have to buy an additional $19 cable. If I had known this I would have just bought a 2nd cable instead of the dock.

    Too-steep docking angle, premium price

    Written by NN from Houston

    Oct 22, 2008

Performancewise, it works just as it should: it syncs and charges my iPhone 3G in a space-saving position on the desk.

I believe my desk surface is close to ergonomically correct, where my forearms are parallel to the desk surface and the floor. But the angle of the iPhone 3G in the dock is like 70-80 degrees from horizontal, so it practically appears to be sitting straight up and down. To adjust for this, I either hunch to see everything on the screen or push it farther back on the desk. Neither is a great option. I guess I might place it on some sort of pedestal...

The dock has a nice heft to it, plus a grippy rubber base. Frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay for it and the additional USB cable myself (I keep the USB cable that came with the iPhone at home), because I do find the cost of both combined is a bit high. If, however, you just have one computer you use your iPhone 3G with, you only need to buy the dock; then it kinda makes sense why the dock didn't have another USB cable packaged with it. I tell myself that, anyway...

    Why not in the package?

    Written by JT from Calgary

    Oct 8, 2008

The first iPhone came with the charging cable AND this dock. Now they don't include it and that really hurts. The dock is alright, it does the job but is still overpriced for being essentially a stand for your iphone that looks neat. I've gone back to just using the cable direction because the base of the dock is not big enough to stop the iphone from falling over from time to time when you try to use the phone while it is in it's dock.

    Observation, not review

Written by DF from San Rafael

    Sep 16, 2008

I agree that it is often frustrating to buy something and not have the cable. But in this case, since the cable comes with the phone, three cheers for Apple for not including superfluous cables. I already have too many cables around my house, and how many of them are headed straight for the landfill. I'm waiting for Apple and every other consumer electronics company to adopt GreenPlug, or something, so we don't need to buy all these ridiculous cables and AC adapters.

Small but important omission; Apple Bluetooth headset owners please read

    Written by AG from Belcamp

    Sep 10, 2008

So I'll start out by agreeing with the comments below. Annoying that the dock's not in the iPhone retail box. A shame that the dock's retail box hasn't got a cable in it. As a dock though, it does what it says on the box.

My little observation that may be of value to others is that you cannot use this with the Bluetooth Travel Cable (aka the sync cable with a charging point for the Apple Bluetooth headset). In the absence of the dual dock for the 3G phone, I had the bright idea to put the headset cable into the dock on the assumption that both the phone and headset would charge. Oh no. Some bright spark has the dock/cable connected in such away that the moment the cable is connected to the dock power to the headset is cut off.

Summary: the only way to charge a 3G iPhone and Apple Bluetooth headset together is to use the cable alone (or take a dremmel to the dual dock for the original iPhone).

Nice dock but bad Apple spirit...

    Written by VM from akutan

    Aug 29, 2008

Why didn't Apple just put the dock in the iPhone box? Why make people pay even more for something that should have been there?

When the third generation iPhone comes out, I bet they're not going to put anything but the phone in the box, everything else will come out seperately and will not be compatible with the previous model...

Anyways, the dock itself works, so it deserves a 5/5 rating, but Apple's little annoying methods like this to get the customers to pay even more deserve a 1/5...

Good Product, But Should Have Been Included in the Box!!

Written by RA from San Clemente

    Jul 26, 2008

This is great to have for any iPhone 3G owner, but Apple should have supplied one in the box the iPhone 3G. Really disappointed in them for this. With the V1 iPhone you got an extra wall adapter, USB cable, and the dock at this same price. Now they're making you buy an extra adapter and cable seperate. All products are overpriced, if you're looking to save money, shop around. Apple's really ripping people off this time around.

    It's okay...

    Written by AW from Frisco

    Jul 22, 2008

For JUST the dock, it's perfect. It charges the phone, which is all it's advertised to do. I was really excited to open up the original iPhone box and get a dock too. And ever since I heard that my original iPhone dock didn't work with the new one, I've been very upset. It's stupid that they charge $30 just for the dock that they force you to buy if you like docks by (probably) deliberately designing to phone NOT to fit the old one.

    Expensive

    Written by EB from Kildare

    Jul 21, 2008

It costs a lot of money for a plastic pad that only holds the iPhone in a vertical position ... The Universal Dock for the iPod 5G could handle the Apple remote and had an S-video-out port, which were great, but this one only got the dock connector and the line-out ports, which are already available on the iPhone itself.

It's great, good-looking, make the iPhone really stand (even better than the universal dock for iPods), fully fonctional and everything, but it's a big 30$ for the 'convenience'... which I had to pay 40$ in Canada, which starts to be very expensive for a plastic dock.

    Just a dock

    Written by SD from DURHAM

    Jul 16, 2008

    Pros:

    - The viewing angle of the dock looks pretty natural when used on your desk, but also on the average night stand.

    - Easy to dock and undock. Fits snugly, but not too tight

    - Small and easy to take to an office

    Cons:

    - No extra cord

    - Don't ask me how, but it's easy to knock over face forward. Wouldn't have been a problem if the "base" area was a little bigger

Overal not a bad solution, but I went with a all silicone cover. No te phone doesn't fit in the dock unless you uncover the bottom part of the skin. This could have been prevented if the connector had variable height options.

Without a cover the phone would scratch so I think I will get rid of the dock and just lay it flat.

It's the same dock, for more money

    Written by NW from KIRKLAND

    Jul 14, 2008

What can I say? It's a dock, and it works fine. This is more or less the same old iphone dock that we all came to know and love when it came bundled with iPhone v1 - but now we have to pay $29 for it because it doesn't come included with iPhone 3G. For that reason, it gets only three stars from me.
